Artist Peter Lenk erected the spinning statue Imperia here at Constance Harbour clandestinely in 1993. It refers to a story by Balzac that satirizes the morals of Catholic clergy. Although the statue itself may interest you, you can also enjoy taking a stroll and watching the ships pass through the harbor. Consider relaxing in the restaurants that fill the area, as they are some of the best in the city.
Great place to spend a few hours. Good cages around. Take ferry to Meersburg or various other towns around they lake - which is bordered by Austria , Switzerland , Germany and France. Efficient ferry booking at the harbour.
This is a really nice place, where you can rent a boat or have a ride in one. The view is nice, so is the atmosphere. Very beautiful town for a short visit and sightseeing. In the evening many possibilities to enjoy a drink.

AT THE AMAZING AND ROTATING IMPERIA STATUE IN KONSTANZ, Germany !!
The Imperia is a statue at the entrance of the harbour of Konstanz, Germany, commemorating the Council of Constance that took place there between 1414 and 1418.
The concrete statue is 9 metres high, weighs 18 tonnes, and stands on a pedestal that rotates around its axis once every four minutes.
It was created by Peter Lenk and clandestinely erected in 1993.
The erection of the statue caused controversy, but it was on the private property of a rail company that did not object to its presence.
The Imperia shows a woman holding two men on her hands.
The two men represent Pope Martin V and Emperor Sigismund. Martin V was elected during the Council while Sigismund was the king who called the council.
Both are naked except for the crown and papal tiara, respectively, that they wear as symbols of their power.
The statue refers to a short story by Balzac, La Belle Impéria.
The story is a harsh satire of the Catholic clergy's morals, where Imperia seduces cardinals and princes at the Council of Constance and has power over them all.
The historical Imperia that served as the source material of Balzac's story was a well-educated Italian courtesan who died in 1512, nearly 100 years after the council, and never visited Konstanz.....

Lying on picturesque Lake Constance (or Bodensee in German), Konstanz has been a city since the first century AD, later gaining prominence as a religious center and then as the site of the only bridge crossing the Rhine River. The Old Town is one of Konstanz’s main attractions and is home to the city’s famed cathedral, originally dating from the 7th century. Due to a border anomaly, Konstanz lies on Switzerland’s land mass, and the Swiss town of Kreuzlingen is just a short walk away.
Konstanz is a university city with approximately 80,000 inhabitants located at the western end of Lake Constance in the south-west corner of Germany, bordering Switzerland.

The Münster (Cathedral), (In the old town, at Münsterplatz). Construction completed on the North Tower in about 1100 AD. Built between 1100 and 1854, the church is a magnificent example of architectural styles of the centuries. Climb up the tower for a fantastic view of Konstanz and the Bodensee.
The harbour. From the harbour on a clear day, you can see the Swiss and Austrian alps across the lake. The harbour is a great place to see sailboats, catch a boat across the lake, sit in a beer garden, rent a paddle boat or mini motor boat, or relax in the park.
Mainau flower island, (by car: follow Mainaustraße; by bus: bus line 4). Every day from sunrise until sunset. Flower gardens and parks, butterfly house, greenhouse. Mar 19 - Oct 24: €17.00 adult, € 10.00 students, children under 13 free. Off-season is about half-price.
Niederburg district, (north-west corner of old town). This charming district is the oldest part of Konstanz. It is made up of narrow streets and old buidings, sometimes more then 700 years old. On the first Friday of each month from May to October, the shops of Niederburg stay open late and there is music, flea market tables, and art in the streets. It's a very cozy atmosphere and worth a walk through.
Art nouveau houses beside the lake, Seestrasse (on the north shore where the lake meets the Rhine, just east of the train bridge).
Bismarck Tower, on 'Bismarksteig' street in the Petershausen district. There are towers commemorating the first German chancellor Otto von Bismarck all over Germany. Konstanz's Bismarck tower is located at the top of a grapevine-covered hill. There are benches and firepits at the base of the tower. It's a nice place to watch the sunset. There's a good view from the base of the tower and an even better one from the top.
Konzil (Council building), (at the harbour). This building was built in 1388 and originally used as a warehouse. From 1414-1417 the council of Konstanz was held here to elect a new pope. It currently contains a restaurant and concert hall, and is undergoing restoration work.
Rheintorturm and Pulverturm (Rhine entrance tower and Powder tower), (On the south shore of the Rhine, just downstream from where the lake meets the Rhine.). Remnants of the old city defenses.
Schnetztor, (Located at the south end of Hussenstrasse in the old town.). 14th century city gate and tower, next to a bit of the old city wall.

Sculptures along the German-Swiss border, (Along the border, next to the lake). Where there used to be a border fence, there is now a series of 22 sculptures representing the trumps of the tarot, the Great Arkana.

Město Konstanz je zajímavé nejen z historických, ale i současných událostí, které jsou magnetem pro turisty. Je tu historická událost spojená s upálením J. Husa a dále socha Impérie znázorňující, jak si světská i duchovní moc zahrává ze světem. Pokud jste ve městě nebyli, máte se možnost podívat na video.
City Konstanz is interesting from a historical as well as contemporary events, which are a magnet for tourists. There's a historical event associated with the being burned Jan Hus the statue of and name of the Imperia depicting how secular and spiritual power placed the world. If you're not in, you have the opportunity to look at the video.

Konstanz is a city on Lake Constance (Bodensee), in southern Germany. Its preserved medieval district of Niederburg includes the Romanesque Konstanz Cathedral, known for its mix of decorative styles and a Gothic spire. The town hall is covered in delicate frescoes and has a Renaissance-style courtyard. The Rosgartenmuseum chronicles the region’s cultural history, exhibiting prehistoric to 20th-century objects.
Sidling up to the Swiss border, bisected by the Rhine and outlined by the Alps, Konstanz sits prettily on the northwestern shore of Lake Constance. Roman emperors, medieval traders and the bishops of the 15th-century Council of Constance have all left their mark on this alley-woven town, mercifully spared from the WWII bombings that obliterated other German cities.
When the sun comes out, Konstanz is a feel-good university town with a lively buzz and upbeat bar scene, particularly in the cobbled Altstadt and the harbour, where the voluptuous Imperia turns. In summer the locals, nicknamed Seehasen (lake hares), head outdoors to the leafy promenade and enjoy lazy days in lakefront lidos.
Konstanz is a city in southern Germany. It lies on the border with Switzerland and on Lake Constance (Bodensee), exactly where the river Rhine exits the lake. The city is split in two by the Rhine. Although the Rhine is the usual border between Switzerland and Germany, the historic part of Konstanz lies on the south (Swiss) side of the Rhine and is more or less an enclave.
Konstanz has traces of civilization dating from the stone age and was settled by the Romans in about 50 CE. Konstanz was an important trade centre and a spiritual centre. At the council of Konstanz in 1414-1418, a papal election was held, ending the papal schism. Konstanz attempted to join the Swiss Confederacy in about 1460, but was voted down. Due to its proximity to Switzerland, Konstanz was not bombed during world war II and its historic old town remains intact. It is a historic city with a charming old town, and could be called the jewel of the region.

Die Imperia ist eine Statue im Hafen von Konstanz am Bodensee, entworfen und ausgeführt von dem Bildhauer Peter Lenk und 1993 aufgestellt. Die Figur ist aus Beton gegossen, neun Meter hoch, 18 Tonnen schwer und dreht sich mit Hilfe eines Rundtisches innerhalb von vier Minuten einmal um die eigene Achse. In ihrem Sockel ist eine Pegelmessstation integriert, die von einem begehbaren Steg umgeben ist.

Lago de Constança e é um destino turístico de extrema beleza.
De Fussen partimos para Konstanz. Tivemos que atravessar de balsa. Que cidade poderia ter uma localização mais bonita que Konstanz? E é verdade. A maior cidade no lago, que os alemães chamam de Bodensee, empresta seu nome para o Lago de Constança e é um destino turístico de extrema beleza, com sua vista sobre as águas até os Alpes e os limites da Suíça. Na mesma noite em que chegamos em Konztanz, já atravessamos a pé a fronteira entre a Alemanha e Suíça. Depois, voltamos para Konztanz e fomos até a festa que estava tendo no centro da cidade. Lá, experimentamos pela primeira vez käsespätzle, uma massa alemã com queijo. Depois, ainda, o Danio pegou uma enorme salsicha no pão. E eu resolvi experimentar um baumstriezel, um bolo tubo de massa cozido em fogo originário do sudeste da Transilvânia. Claro que não conhecíamos nada disso, foi a enorme fila nas barraquinhas que nos deixaram curiosos para saber o segredo de tamanha procura. Ainda pegamos uma bebida quente, e eu levei para casa mais uma canequinha personalizada das festas de final de ano na Alemanha; dessa vez, era do Lago Konztanz.
Bem alimentados e encantados com tudo que ali vimos, fomos para o hotel dormir. Bem próximo ao hotel, o maior shopping da cidade tem o nome de Lago Shopping Center Konztanz, isso mesmo, escrito “lago”, como em português. Será mais uma daquelas palavras que nós usamos em inglês?
Na manhã seguinte, ainda passeamos pela beira do lago onde estivemos na festinha na noite anterior, dessa vez queríamos ver a paisagem de dia. Estava chuvoso, mas, mesmo assim, nada nos impedia de circular pela cidade.
Despedimos-nos de Konztanz, ao pé do lago com vista para a torre do lago, e aos pés do monumento Constance Harbour, uma estátua rotativa de ferro.
