South African wines are some of the best in the world and I was lucky enough to get a tour of a vineyard just outside of Cape Town. Constantia Glen makes excellent white & red varieties and winemaker Justin, gave me a behind the scenes tour of the vineyard, the winery & the experience at Constantia Glen. I also got to enjoy one of my favorite, hand crafted meals in South Africa, paired with glasses of their premier wines of course.

We are on a roll, visiting yet another boutique wine farm in Constantia. This place is known for their ultra premium cool climate wines, and their VIEW!!!
We were given a quick sneak peak of their brand new Chenin Blanc and white blend which I would highly recommend you go there and taste!
My Gem for the day was their Number 5. Its a 5 bordeaux blend and has the complexity and length of a national highway blended together with buckets of red fruit and hints of fynbos. Yes, I actually smelt the fynbos.

About Groot Constantia:
If you haven’t heard about Groot Constantia, then it is my pleasure to introduce you to South Africa’s oldest winery. I would be doing a disservice if I didn’t give some of the history about this estate. In 1679 Simon van der Stel was appointed by the Dutch East India Company to govern the Cape of Good Hope. After years of loyal service, he requested land from the Company. He periodically sent out riders to collect soil samples and in 1685 he found a potential wine-growing area that had magnificent scenery situated behind Table Mountain. Over the years the wines produced on the estate caught the attention of influential people across the globe – clearly due to its impressive quality. Global aristocracy made sure that they had enough stock of this acclaimed and precious product.
The estate was named Constantia after the Latin word for constancy or steadfastness. These attributes he valued greatly and today the winemaker, Boela Gerber and staff follow in his footsteps to uphold his enduring legacy of perfection at Groot Constantia.

Constantia - Beau Constantia - Hidden Gems
Ok, ok ok. Amazing red blends and one hell of a Viognier. Yes, I am biased but this Viognier will convert a beer drinker into a white wine lover.
Thanks to Johan, we never missed the uniqueness of the red blend and were educated quite extensively about all their wines. We heard that Johan came from an theatrical background and was converted with Viognier to a Winie (Wine lover - Sommelier)
This place not only has fantastic wines but a SPECTACULAR view and one of the top restaurants in South Africa (the Chef’s Warehouse)

Constantia - Steenberg - Hidden Gems
Visiting Steenberg was a white wine adventure of note!!! Their Sav Blanc and Semillon tasted like nectar from the white grape gods. So, what did they do? They went and combined the best of the best white on their farm and made a Sav Blanc and Semillon blend. AAAHHHH. That was our gem!!!
Another great thing about Steenberg is their view of the mountains and the garden sculptures scattered all over the place.
Although we selected the white blend as our gem, we encourage you to try out their bubbly (not shown in the video, left for you to go make your own mind up).
