Monodendri, Vikos Gorge - Greece HD Travel Channel

Monodendri -- Μονοδένδρι - north of Ioannina in the Zagoria is a popular starting point for walking through the Vikos Gorge. The gorge is 6 miles long and according to the Guinness Book of Records it is the world's deepest gorge with a depth from 1,968 ft to 3,281 ft. As you can see in the video, you have a stunning overview from the Monastery Agia Paraskevi, founded in 1414. A well-maintained walking trail of 1,968 ft leads to the monastery. The impressive frescos in the church date presumably from the late Byzantine time, probably from 1412.
Back in Monodendri we've deserved a break and made a stop on the market square in Pitas tis Kikitsas restaurant. The name of the restaurant dates back to 1958, when the Frenchmen were the first tourists in the region. They had problems with the Greek name of the landlady and they simply called here Madame Kiki. Here you can taste the typical Alevropitas, made of flour, butter, eggs and feta and baked according to the original recipe from Madame Kiki from 1958.

Monodendri - Μονοδένδρι, nördlich von Ioannina in der Zagoria, ist ein beliebter Ausgangspunkt zum Durchwandern der Vikos-Schlucht - Φαράγγι του Βίκου. Die 10 km lange und laut Guiness Buch der Rekorde tiefste Schlucht der Welt ist zwischen 600 und 1.000 m tief. Einen atemberaubenden Überblick hat man vom Kloster Agía Paraskevi, das 1414 gegründet wurde und über einen 600 m langen Wanderweg erreichbar ist. Die beeindruckenden Fresken in der Kirche stammen vermutlich aus der spätbyzantinischen Zeit, man schätzt das Jahr 1412.
Zurück in Monodendri haben wir uns eine Pause verdient und machen halt auf dem Marktplatz bei Pitas tis Kikitsas. Der Name des Restaurants stammt aus dem Jahre 1958 als Franzosen als erste Touristen die Region bereisten. Diese hatte Probleme mit dem griechischen Namen der Wirtin und nannten sie einfach Madam Kiki. Hier werden die typischen Alevropitas aus Mehl, Butter, Eiern und Feta nach dem Originalrezept von Madam Kiki von 1958 gebacken.

The hidden path in Vikos Gorge

With 120-490 m deepths it's the deepest Gorge in the world, The Vikos Gorge.
A Gorge has steep sides, a Canyon does not (not all the time at least).

To get here follow these instructions:
Google Maps: Convent of Agia Paraskevi, walk through the monestary, keep left,
go up the 2m cliffs on the left, see the closed off path.

For the hidden track go on by the cliffs. 0:49, right after this part you go up left in the woods (0:59), when you see the path you'll know it but it's not used much at all! This tip you only find here on Da Internetz!

If the door at 1:07 is locked, do not go around, you will die.

For the view at 2:13 go to: 39.907303, 20.753924, continue on that road.

Tip for best view of the Gorge: 39.960253, 20.703094, I belive it to be there, the last shots at 3:13. Difficult to find but at the bench by the road, hike down on the right side of the bench through the bushes 50m.

I don't advice anybody to go here, only show how to. You do it on your own risk. At some places this video was taken drops were over 150-200m. All the time at least 50m. Take safety in consideration, many people have hurt them selves, some died (according to greek locals).
