Convent of St. Francis, Santiago de Compostela, Galicia, Spain, Europe
San Francisco del Valle de Dios is a Franciscan monastery founded at the beginning of the 13th century in Santiago de Compostela, declared an historic artistic monument. It is located outside the walls of the old town of Santiago de Compostela, province of La Coruña, in the place known as Val de Deus (Valle de Dios). Tradition says that Saint Francis of Assisi, on a pilgrimage to Compostela in 1214, was welcomed by a Compostelan family, the man was a coalman named Cotolai; In his house of Monte Pedroso. He entrusted the latter to build a monastery, but when he replied that he had no resources, he showed him a treasure near the hermitage of San Paio do Monte (San Payo del Monte), which would allow him to carry out the work. Val de Deus was a land owned by the Benedictine monastery of San Martín Pinario, which yielded it in exchange for an annual fish basket, which continued to be delivered until the end of the 18th century. The primitive convent collapsed at the beginning of the eighteenth century and there remain only five pointed arches remaining in the main cloister and the tomb of Cotolai. These arches were in the Chapter Hall, where Charles V held courts in 1520. The rebuilding, which involved changing the orientation of his church, began in 1742, and it was not without problems, since the neighbors (especially the monks of San Francisco) complained about the magnitude of the work, which took away light and ventilation and, in addition, would occupy lands belonging to San Martin. The dispute was settled by lowering the height of the Franciscan church. The renovation of the medieval factory began with Archbishop Maximilian. The works of the new temple followed the traces given by Simon Rodriguez, although the slowness of the works made the participation of the other masters suppose the inclusion of some substantial change. The plant of the church corresponds to the type Jesuítico, in form of rectangle in which inscribes a Latin cross. The facade of the church, designed (in baroque style) in the XVIII century by Simón Rodríguez, imposes itself in the contour by its size. It was executed by Fray Manuel Caeiro, and was not finished yet in 1770, a fact that makes it respond to two differentiable concepts in the decoration reduced to the bottom of it, changing drastically above the height of the entablature that changes perceptibly adapting To neoclassical principles. The lower part is baroque and the upper neoclassical and consists of three bodies and three streets. In the center they emphasize four Doric columns flanking an image of San Francisco (work of Jose Antonio Mauro Ferreiro Suárez). The second body is dominated by a huge window flanked by Ionic columns, on which supports a triangular pediment. The side streets support the two steeples. The atrium is several meters below the street level at one end, and in front of it, next to it, stands a monument to San Francisco made by Francisco Asorey in 1926. The interior of the temple is also sober, though monumental. The plant is of Latin cross with three naves. The central one, of five sections, and the crucer covered by a barrel vault with dome of half orange in the pechinas, modifications of Fray Manuel Caeiro. The decoration of the interior of the temple shows the impression of Simon Rodriguez with the decoration of plates and cylinders. To the sides of the ships and to those of the presbytery are located intercommunicated chapels on which a tribune runs. The sacristy behind the main chapel has the same width as the temple.

1. A ALAMEDA (0:46), parte da cidade erigida em finais do século XIX que tem vários edifícios importantes, como a sede do município, da Deputação Provincial, e outros;
2. AS RUÍNAS DO CONVENTO DE SÃO DOMINGOS (1:04) que conservam a cabeceira da igreja, com cinco absides góticas de finais do século XIV;
3. A IGREJA DA VIRGEM PEREGRINA (1:41) edificada no século XVIII com uma fachada curva simulando uma concha de vieira, símbolo do Caminho de Santiago. Na sua fachada há imagens da Virgem, São José e Santiago, todos vestidos como peregrinos. No interior há uma imagem da Virgem do século XIX. É um ponto de passagem para os peregrinos que vão a Santiago de Compostela;
4. A ampla “PRAZA DA FERRERÍA” (2:04) rodeada de um conjunto de edifícios que datam do século XV. Nos seus jardins encontramos a IGREJA DE SÃO FRANCISCO (2:24) fundada pessoalmente por São Francisco de Assis, quando em peregrinação a Santiago de Compostela, e que fazia parte do Convento de São Francisco. Desde a sua origem que foi lugar de enterro de famílias ilustres da cidade. No seu interior destacam-se vários sarcófagos do século XV;
PONTEVEDRA is the administrative capital of the province of Pontevedra, one of four provinces that make up the Autonomous Community of Galicia, in Spain. The city of Pontevedra is located 50 km north of the Portuguese border (Tui - Valença). From my passage through the city, I highlight:
1. ALAMEDA (0:46), part of the city built in the late nineteenth century where we find several important buildings such as the county seat, the Provincial Deputation, and others;
2. RUINS OF THE CONVENT OF SANTO DOMINGO (1:04) which retain the headboard of church with five Gothic apses from the late fourteenth century;
3. THE CHURCH OF VIRGIN PILGRIM (1:41) built in the eighteenth century with a curved facade simulating a scallop shell, the symbol of Camino de Santiago. In its facade there are images of the Virgin, St. Joseph and Santiago, all dressed as pilgrims. Inside there is a picture of the Virgin of the nineteenth century. It is a point of passage for pilgrims going to Santiago de Compostela;
4. The wide PRAZA DA FERRERÍA (2:04) surrounded by a set of buildings dating from the fifteenth century. In its gardens we find the SAN FRANCISCO CHURCH (2:24) personally founded by St. Francis of Assisi, while on pilgrimage to Santiago de Compostela, and that was part of the Convent of San Francisco. From the very beginning it was the burial place of illustrious families of the city. Inside, stand out a few fifteenth-century sarcophagi;
5. REAL SANTA MARIA MAIOR BASILICA (3:12) which is the mother church of Pontevedra. It was built at the initiative of the Guild of Seafarers in the sixteenth century. It is often said that this church is the pearl of Galician art and is in the historic city center. It is not allowed to photograph inside the church.

Places to see in ( Galicia - Spain ) Casco antiguo de Pontevedra
The historic center of Pontevedra, declared a Historic-Artistic Site in 1951, is one of the best preserved in Galicia, and indisputable witness to the medieval splendor of the city, when Pontevedra was still closely linked to the sea.
The beauty of its streets and squares will seduce anyone who visits them, among popular and ancient houses that reveal the past of the city, with important architectural examples that preserve the charm of past times. Throughout the walk you will see the last hidalgo of Pontevedra, when walking to the passage of the many blazons that occupy the facades of all the historical helmet.
La Pla de la Leña, where the firewood used to be used to heat the kitchens, includes the three mansions that currently house the Provincial Museum, which is recognized as one of the most representative museums in Galician history, archeology and art. At one step, the Plaza de Verdura, where the products of the countryside could be marketed only a few years ago, became one of the main centers of the town, a meeting point for a refreshment before continuing our walk to Plaza del Teucro, name of the Greek arquero to which the foundation of Pontevedra is attributed to him.
Going down to the river bank we arrive at Mugártegui square - just before reaching the Plaza de Abastos - where the pazo currently occupying the seat of the Regulatory Council of the Rías Baixas Denomination of Origin, flag of the well-known wine Albariño de area. Following our route, in the highest part of the historical center, we find the spectacular square of the Ferraria, where formerly the artisans worked the forge. Today it is a meeting place for many of the shows organized in the city, and it houses, among other buildings, the Convent of San Francisco, with its beautiful gardens.
Besides the representativeness and excellent state of preservation of its civil architecture, the historical center of Pontevedra stands out for its no less important religious architecture. Thus, the ruins of the old Convent of San Domingos, despite the fact that today only part of its external skeleton and the head of the old temple, are considered the best exponent of Galician Gothic.
Near the ruins of San Domingos is the Basilica of Santa Maria a Mayor, declared a National Monument, which should be emphasized the plateresque front of great size ordered to build polo old Gremio de Mareantes in the XV century, where depicted Christ of the Good Journey, to which the fishermen entrusted themselves before leaving to the sea.
In addition, it is worth mentioning several representative conventual churches, such as San Francisco, La Peregrina, with a scallop-shaped plant as a symbol of the Xacobeos Roads - and, a little further on, below the Plaza de la Leña, of San Bartolomeu and Santa Clara.
