8F ,48151 and Jubilee, 45690 Leander seen hauling The Conwy Quest Railtour, Chester to Blaenau Ffestiniog, to celebrate the re-opening of the Conway Valley line after closure due to flood damage in March this year.
To start, the tour is seen arriving at LLandudno Jn, with the locos running tender first along the coast from Chester. ( usual practice for this route,so the locos are facing the forward for the run to Blaenau.)
After taking on water, the locos run round the train.
Next, to celebrate the re-opening, there is a short service, where the loco ( Leander ) 3rd August 2019

Chester to Holyhead - North Wales Coast

A really exceptional late summer day is the backdrop for this run along the North Wales Coast. Traction is a Class 175 provided by TfW and there’s lots to keep you interested. Join us on this scenic run over one of the country’s most beautiful coastal railways.

LMS 45690 Leander + 48151 - The Conwy Quest reopening train. 3/8/19

LMS 8F Class 2-8-0 no 48151 & LMS Jubilee class 4-6-0 no 45690 Leander working 1Z67 The Conwy Quest from Chester to Blaenau Ffestiniog via Llandudno Junction on Sat 3rd August 2019.

Like the CME trip on the 20th Jul I hadnt intended to go on the trip but film it instead at select locations on the day. The 8F was to originaly work the special with LMS Royal Scot 4-6-0 no 46115 Scots Guardsman which had very recently returned to steam following it's 10 yearly overhaul. But during 46115's first light test run from Carnforth to Hellifield the engine was failed with a set of multiple hotboxes on it's driving wheels which would prevent it from taking part in the re-opening special. The only spare engine available that was also light enough for the route was 45690 Leander, 45690's role on the CME that was on the same day was therefore covered by 35018 British India Line.

This run would officialy be the first time ever that 45690 would have gone up the Conwy Valley line to Blaenau Ffestiniog, not even a jubilee went up the line in BR or LMS days. I therefore did a last minute booking and decided to travel on the special rather than be lineside.

As was done with The Welsh Mountaineer trains the Chester to Llandudno Jcn leg of the tour was done with the two engines running tender first. The reason for this being as the gradient of the route from Betws-y-Coed is around 1 in 40 in the Blaenau direction. This combined with the curves of the route would normaly restrict a single steam loco to no more than 6 coaches (experience from the 90's), todays run though had 9 so double heading was neccesary.

Another highlight was that this was only the 3rd time in preservation that a double headed special had gone up the line. The first in Oct 1999 was never planned to happen but after 80079 slipped to a stand at Pont-y-Pant with 4 coaches she had to be banked by 80098 to Blaenau and the two then double headed the last 4 coaches to Blaenau. The second and latest run was back in May 2009 when 45231 & 45407 double headed a Welsh Mountaineer train from Worcester to Blaenau up the branch. That run was also the first trip up the branch since 1999 and was to become the start of regular summer steam specials running to Blaenau Ffestiniog in the 21st century.
