Castle Dinas, Conwy, Wales 1970s
Places to see in ( Bala - UK )
Places to see in ( Bala - UK )
Bala is a market town and community in Gwynedd, Wales. Formerly an urban district, Bala lies within the historic county of Merionethshire. Bala lies at the north end of Bala Lake (Welsh: Llyn Tegid), 17 miles (27 km) north-east of Dolgellau.
Bala is little more than one wide street, Stryd Fawr (High Street, literally Great Street). The High Street and its shops can be quite busy in the summer months with many tourists. Bala was ranked having the 20th highest percentage of Welsh language speakers in Wales by electoral division, in the United Kingdom
Set within the Bala Fault, Bala Lake (Welsh: Llyn Tegid) is the largest natural lake in Wales at almost 4 miles in length and half a mile wide. At 138 feet, its depths could hide the tower of St Giles Church in Wrexham and still have 3 feet of water above. The lake has occasionally been known to freeze over—most recently in the severe winters of 1947 and 1963. The rare Gwyniad fish — trapped in the lake at the end of the last Ice Age, some 10,000 years ago — is in danger because its natural home is increasingly unsuitable. A member of the whitefish family, it is found only in Bala Lake.
Cwm Hirnant, a valley running south from Bala, gives its name to the Hirnantian Age in the Ordovician Period of geological time. Bala lies on the A494, a major trunk road that leads to Dolgellau, 18 miles to the southwest, and to Ruthin, Mold and Queensferry to the northwest. The closest major urban areas to Bala are Wrexham at 30 miles, Chester at 40 miles, and Liverpool, 52 miles to the northeast.
The Afon Tryweryn, a river fed from Llyn Celyn which runs through Bala, is world-famous for its white water kayaking. International governing bodies, the International Canoe Federation, the European Canoe Union and the British Canoe Union all hold national and international events there. The Canolfan Tryweryn National Whitewater Centre has its home in Bala. There are at least three local campsites that cater for the influx of canoeists from many parts of the world.
An annual music festival known as 'Wa Bala' is also held in the town. The venue hosts local Welsh bands and is similar in format to Dolgellau's Sesiwn Fawr. Nearby are the mountains Aran Fawddwy and Arenig Fawr. Coleg y Bala is at the top of the hill on the road towards Llyn Celyn. The Victoria Hall is a small old cinema, that had been a community hall. There are several chapels: notably Capel Mawr and Capel Bach. The livestock market on Arenig Street is still going strong. Bro Eryl estate was built just after World War II.
( Bala - UK ) is well know as a tourist destination because of the variety of places you can enjoy while you are visiting the city of Bala . Through a series of videos we will try to show you recommended places to visit in Bala - UK

Abergele Traders 12 days of Christmas
About two weeks ago the Abergele Pensarn Community events channel was approached by a town trader with the Idea of doing a fun video as a way of thanking all the Abergele Pensarn and surrounding community for their support and trade.
We naturally thought it was a great Idea, so we embarked on getting 12 traders in the town to sing 1 verse of the 12 days of Christmas and a fun message from the Town Council, some of you will have seen the filming.
We cannot thank the traders and the Town Council enough for their outstanding enthusiasm and support for this very fun light hearted project. We hope you enjoy it and watch in the spirt it is intended

Alwen Dam North Wales UK in 4K
A nice calm sunset swept evening, at the Alwen Dam, with my
DJI Phantom 4 drone.
The Alwen Reservoir or Cronfa Alwen is a 5 km long reservoir near Pentre-Llyn-Cymmer in Conwy County Borough, Wales. The bulk of the reservoir lies in Cerrigydrudion community, while the northern arm forms the boundary between Pentrefoelas, to the west, and Llansannan and Nantglyn, to the north and east. It is held back by the 27 metre high Alwen Dam, which impounds the Afon Alwen, and is 8 km downstream from Llyn Alwen. It was built between 1909 and 1921, originally to supply water to the town of Birkenhead, near Liverpool in England. Today it is part of the River Dee regulation system and is operated by Welsh Water.
The dam is a gravity-arch masonry dam. The first stone of the dam records that the engineers were Sir Alex. Binnie, Son and [George] Deacon and the contractors were Sir Robert McAlpine.[1] A large water treatment facility was built below the dam, and a cast iron underground aqueduct laid to Birkenhead. The original water treatment buildings are still standing, but the equipment inside has long gone, replaced by modern plant in a new building.
The operators, Welsh Water have a scheme to teach children about the importance of water, linked to the National Curriculum Key Stage 2 and offer an on-site classroom and guided tours of the water treatment works to schools. The nearby Outdoor Education Centre at Pentre-Llyn-Cymmer accommodates children during school trips.
The reservoir is very close to Llyn Brenig. It is at the end of a valley, and has no through routes around it for vehicles. However the reservoir has an extensive network of trails (public footpaths as well as forest roads suitable for horse riding, mountain biking and walking).
Footpaths around the reservoir were upgraded in 2005 and 2006, providing better access to the general public and allowing greater exploration of the North and South Alwen forests.
Fishing is permitted through permit (which can be purchased from the visitors centre at the nearby Llyn Brenig visitors centre).
The Alwen Trail
An easy-to-follow, way marked, circular route around the Alwen Reservoir of approximately 7.5 miles (11 km), the Alwen Trail follows forest tracks and paths along the water’s edge and up to the moorland of Mynydd Hiraethog. The scenery around the reservoir is wonderfully varied with a beautiful section along the water’s edge. Along the route six illustrated panels provide information on the wildlife, culture and folk tales associated with the area. The trail links to the nearby Brenig Trail. start the trail from the Alwen Dam. Llyn Brenig Visitor Centre and its facilities are nearby.

Think Safe Drink Safe this Christmas
Today marks the official launch of the 2016 Think Safe, Drink Safe Christmas Campaign for North Wales - this year’s focus is to encourage revellers to have a good time and look out for their mates over the party season.
The campaign – which is being coordinated by partner agencies across the region, is aimed at ensuring visitors to town’s across the region can enjoy a safe and relaxed night out during the festive period. It also aims to promote safe and responsible drinking and prevent and reduce levels of alcohol fuelled violent crime and anti-social behaviour across North Wales at this time of year.
During this busy period the NHS have to deal with an additional number of alcohol related incidents that put added pressure on already over-stretched services.
It is also one of the busiest periods for Emergency Services. Between December 18th 2015 and 2nd of January 2016, North Wales Police received 3,714 ‘999’ calls and 12,315 ‘101’ calls. Of all the crime reported to police in December 2015, 9.5% was alcohol-related.
During the campaign there will be a drive to encourage the public to visit and also to ‘know their score’ by taking a new interactive quiz on the North Wales Police website
Conwy Council Chief Executive, Iwan Davies, who leads the Alcohol Harm reduction group, said: “We know that Christmas and the New Year is an extremely busy time. We want visitors to towns and villages across North Wales to enjoy themselves but we frequently find that people drink too much during the festive season. Our aim is to encourage people to have a good time but to drink responsibly. Excessive drinking can affect behaviour and lead to serious consequences. This year our trading standards teams across North Wales will be working with licenced premises to ensure that they don’t serve alcohol to those who are drunk. The message is simple - anti social behaviour and violence will not be tolerated and anyone behaving irresponsibly will be dealt with appropriately and quickly ensuring that North Wales is a safe place to come and enjoy a night out.”
Superintendent Jane Banham of North Wales Police said: “We want people to enjoy the festive season, but we know from experience that at this time of year some people will come to harm due to alcohol excess and it is the emergency services and local councils who are left picking up the pieces.
“The aim of this campaign is to ensure that those who consume and sell alcohol take responsibility for their actions. Our teams will be distributing cards to encourage safe consumption of alcohol and working with our licensed premises to ensure safe and enjoyable evenings for all.
“We make a significant contribution to keeping our town centres safe so people can enjoy a good night out, but we must get the message across that people need to take greater responsibility for themselves and their friends to reduce the likelihood of them being injured, becoming a victim of crime, or being involved in violence through excessive drinking.
“North Wales Police, working with our partners, will ensure that pubs, clubs, shops and drinkers are complying with the law. Those who don’t will be dealt with robustly.
“The message is simple – think safe, drink safe.”
Dr Rob Perry, Emergency Department Consultant said: “Over the Festive period we know we will see a significant number of people who are either suffering from the effects of excess alcohol, or who have been injured as a result of accidents where alcohol has played a part. However these people do not often need the treatment offered by a major hospital emergency department.
“Putting in place support so that people can be checked out and cared for ‘on the spot’ means they can get the right level of care more quickly, helps reduce disruption in the Emergency Department and means my colleagues can concentrate on looking after those people with serious illness or injury who need urgent, possibly life-saving, care.”
All agencies will be using social media to help raise awareness of the campaign and social media users are encouraged to follow the hashtag #ThinkSafeDrinkSafe
