Explore Coober Pedy: An Australian town that lives underground
#GLAadventure team reaches Cooper Pedy which is known for two things - Opal and Underground Homes. Here most of the houses are underground including the hotel. These homes are called dugouts and the houses are fashioned in such a way due to scorching temperature during day time. This underground town was established in 1915 following the discovery of opal there. It's interesting to know that ninety five per cent of the world's opal comes from this area.

Our visit to Fayes Underground Home in Coober Pedy. Follow our travels on our website thewanderingdonkeys.com
An Underground Day - tour Faye's Home
Coober Pedy is a very interesting city in the far end north of South Australia (outback). It is mostly underground, looks like Mars, and it has been the set for Mad Max and other movies. After sleeping underground and listening to strange noises through the night - we went touring around the town and ended up at Faye's home. This lady dig her own house for 10 years and her story is so inspirational that I felt that would add massively to the living on the edge series. I hope you enjoy it.

Coober Pedy Australia
Coober Pedy Australia (2011).
Coober Pedy is a town in northern South Australia, 846 kilometres north of Adelaide on the Stuart Highway. According to the 2011 census, its population was 1,695 (953 males, 742 females, including 275 indigenous Australians).[1] The town is sometimes referred to as the opal capital of the world because of the quantity of precious opals that are mined there. Coober Pedy is renowned for its below-ground residences, called dugouts, which are built in this fashion due to the scorching daytime heat. The name Coober Pedy comes from the local Aboriginal term kupa-piti, which means white man's hole.[2]
Opal was found in Coober Pedy on 1 February 1915; since then the town has been supplying most of the world's gem-quality opal. Coober Pedy today relies as much on tourism as the opal mining industry to provide the community with employment and sustainability. Coober Pedy has over seventy opal fields and is the largest opal mining area in the world.

COOBER PEDY - SOUTH AUSTRALIA
Our travel adventures in Australia.
Could you live like this? LIVING UNDERGROUND - Coober Pedy. Ep.28 - Road Trip Australia
The decision was made to abandon the Oodnadatta track and head straight to Coober Pedy to get it fixed ????. We made it to Coober Pedy fine, which was a relief. Kurt got the part ordered and all fixed within a few days, which was great. We decided to make the most of our time in Coober Pedy while there and see all the sights. We splashed out and did a tour with Oasis Tourist Park. $45 each for 3 hours, which included an underground mine tour ????????♀️????????and chauffeured around to see all the sights. Since it was out of the busy period, everywhere was quiet – which turned out great! We were the only ones on our tour so we got the VIP treatment.
One afternoon, we drove out to ‘The Breakaways’ and watched the sunset ???? – it was incredible! Highly recommend seeing them at that time. On the drive out, we also stopped in at Dingo Fence Info board – the fence runs through 3 states! The highlights for us were the breakaways, kangaroo orphanage ???? & the quirky random stuff* all through the town. Overall Coober Pedy was okay, we wouldn’t say we were disappointed, it’s just, I think we both had different ideas in our heads on what to expect and it wasn't what we had imagined.
