Steamboat Bill Memorial Bridge - Decatur, Al.
The Steamboat Bill Memorial Bridges are two bridges that span one of the widest points along the Tennessee River within the City of Decatur, Alabama, between Morgan County, and Limestone County. One is a cantilever truss, and the other is a reinforced concrete. The bridges carry US 31, Alternate US 72, and Alabama State Route 20 from the intersection of Wilson Street (Alternate US 72, and Alabama 20), and 6th Avenue (US 31) in Northest Decatur.
This bridge is also the busiest road in the city of Decatur. At around 5:00 PM, traffic comes to a standstill as nearly 20,000 cars attempt to cross the river into the city from workplaces in and around Huntsville. About 50,000 - 55,000 cars travel over the bridge daily.
The first bridge built here was the William Keller Bridge, completed in 1928. This drawbridge served as the primary until the cantilever truss bridge was built in 1963. The Keller Bridge carried the west bound traffic and the new bridge carried the east bound traffic. As time moved on the currents of the Tennessee River changed and running barges through the narrow gap created by the drawbridge became more dangerous, and the bridge was hit several times by barges. Also, with the amount of traffic carried by the road, the drawbridge could produce mile long traffic jams. In 1999 the new concrete bridge opened. Eastbound traffic was shifted to the new bridge, westbound was moved to the cantilever bridge, and the Keller Bridge was removed. (Wikipedia)(Thaddeus Roan)

Decatur,AL 01.04.2018 #3
Decatur is a city in Morgan and Limestone counties in the State of Alabama. The city, nicknamed The River City, is located in Northern Alabama on the banks of Wheeler Lake, along the Tennessee River. It is the largest city and county seat of Morgan County.[6] The population in 2010 was 55,683.[3]
Decatur is also the core city of the two-county large Decatur, Alabama metropolitan area which had an estimated population of 153,374 in 2013. Combined with the Huntsville Metropolitan Area, the two create the Huntsville-Decatur Combined Statistical Area, of which Decatur is the second-largest city.
Like many southern cities in the early 19th century, Decatur's early success was based upon its location along a river. Railroad routes and boating traffic pushed the city to the front of North Alabama's economic atmosphere. The city rapidly grew into a large economic center within the Tennessee Valley and was a hub for travelers and cargo between Nashville and Mobile, as well as Chattanooga and New Orleans. Throughout the 20th century, the city experienced steady growth, but was eclipsed as the regional economic center by the fast-growing Huntsville during the space race. The city now finds its economy heavily based on manufacturing, cargo transit, and high-tech industries such as General Electric and United Launch Alliance.

48 Hours in Decatur, Alabama: Possibly Alabama's Most Underrated City??? (condensed version)
We went to Decatur, AL, over the Memorial Day weekend, which is the ideal weekend to see what this underrated city has to offer. Friday night, we went to the entirely free Daikin Festival. Saturday morning, we went to the Alabama Jubilee to watch the hot air balloon race. Unfortunately, it was already too hot for the balloons to fly. After that, we walked through the arts and crafts fair and the car show. Since we were on that side of Point Mallard, we walked down the biking and hiking trail. Later, we went to Rhodes Ferry Park and Delano Park, where the kids played in the splash pad. Saturday evening, we went back to the Alabama Jubilee to watch the hot air balloon glow. Then Sunday, we took in a few more sights, before heading back home.
