During the harvest time of the cork, the whole family works together. Typical Portuguese dishes are served: bread soup based on fresh herbs, ham and migas from the black pig feed by acorns of the cork oaks and tasty desserts as the almond cake Toucinho do Céu and the sweet egg dish Sericaia - that's Alentejo, that's Portugal!
What's cookin' is about traditional culinary recipes from different European regions.

In the Portuguese region Alentejo in the south of Lisbon there are centurie-old cork oak forests, the so-called Montados. They are protected and one tree may only be harvested every nine years. The Alentejo cork is used to make wine corks as well as furniture and clothing. Guida Silva owns cork oak forest since seven generations. Every year between May and August they harvest the valuable natural cork. The harvest is precision work, experienced workers carefully peel the cork bark from the tree trunk. The cork oak is the only tree on earth that is not damaged by peeling. During the harvest months Guida's brother Pedro is responsible for the physical well-being of the whole family. He lives from pig breeding. He was never interested in working in the cork forests. His passion is cooking. His wife Paula and daughter Joana help him to prepare the traditional dishes like the bread soup Açorda à Alentejana, which is prepared with wild herbs from the cork oak forests. At the end of the harvest week, Pedro serves a special delicacy, Migas à Alentejana. This dish is based on the juicy meat of the region's black pigs. The Alentejo pigs feed on the oily acorns of the cork oaks. That is why their meat has a unique taste. Pedro is preparing Toucinho do Céu, a juicy almond cake with icing sugar, and Sericaia, a sweet egg dish with cinnamon, served as dessert. The honey from forest bees from the cork oak forest tastes particularly good with it.

Have you been to Lisbon? It’s an incredible food city. And recently we launched our first Devour Tour there - our Tastes & Traditions of Lisbon Food Tour. And to celebrate it, I decided to make a video along with Ellis Dixon, our wonderful local operations manager and Lisbon expert. Get ready, because this Lisbon food tour is delicious!
So, where did we go?
1. Confeitaria Nacional: This place has been open since the early 1800s and it’s a fantastic place to start your day - a bica (espresso) and a pastry surrounded by gorgeous turn-of-the-century decor.
2. Ginjinha Sem Rival: I love this tiny little shop where you can get a bottle of Portugal’s famous cherry liqueur - and also take a shot of it at the bar. This place has been going since 1840!
3. O Trevo: You have to eat a bifana sandwich when you’re in Lisbon. It’s simple, but delicious - stewed pork, and then you douse it in piri piri sauce and yellow mustard. And this was the place Anthony Bourdain visited!
4. Casa Pereira: I love how this old shop smells like coffee, tea and chocolate. And the walls are lined with incredible bottles of port. So if you want to grab a bottle of port while in the city, this is your place!
5. Trobadores: This place is straight out of Game of Thrones. And despite seemingly a little tacky, it’s actually a place locals come to. You can drink mead (fermneted honey) and grill chorizo sausage right at your table!
6. Bonjardim: Piri piri chicken is famous, and if you’re going to get it in Lisbon (and you should), this is the place! The chicken was so deliciously juicy, and the skin fabulously spicy.
7. O Gaiteiro: I love a good old school restaurant. And in Lisbon these tascas the best spots to order grilled fish: sardines, salt-cold and octopus. O Gaiteiro is a place we visit on Devour’s Lisbon food tour and it’s fantastic - great food, full of local clients.
8. Sol e Pesca: This former fishing shop still looks like… a fishing shop. Apart from the enormous display of canned fish. And please, don’t be afraid of canned fish - it can be absolutely delicious, and this is the place to try it!
9. Manteigaria: Custard tarts are everywhere in Lisbon, but not all custard tarts are created equal. These ones from Manteigaria have a wonderfully crispy and flaky pastry, and custard is like delicious molten lava. A plus, you can watch them making them through the glass window.
3. WHO AM I? ????

Porto
Day 1 in Portugal
Started off with a little trip to Porto by myself. I thought I might as well visit a different city before the main trip, plus it was only approx £10 more for a flight to Lisbon.
I went to centro Porto to have a walk about. Visiting a wine museum, be courts ( because why not....and I didn't realise it was the courts...), photography museum and a nightclub.
I tried some Portuguese sweets ( no idea what they were called)
Lisbon day 2
Flew from Porto to Lisbon and met up with 3 friends asset the airport. Took an Uber taxi to the sexy corinthia hotel lisboa.
We were greeted by our host who have us our colorful pink wristbands and told us what excursions we had included ( Obidos town guided tour, Vineyard tour and a 24 hour Hop on hop off bus tour).
First day was a relax day....so we left the hotel to explore. Played in a park and got lost to find out we were 2 minutes from the hotel originally before we went the wrong way.
Day 3 was the Obidos town and Vineyard guided tour.
SOOOO many hills in Obidos and wall climbing opportunities. I climbed the big wall and walked along it to find a a hole in the wall big enough to fit through...so I did.
While we were there we had a few Shot of a cherry liqueur (i forgot the name) in a chocolate cup.
Then off to the Vineyard tour. I've never been to a vineyard and I'm not a fan of tours but this one was actually really good. We got told about how they make different wines And spirits. (i didn't know they used red grapes to make some white wines!!!)
They gave us around 6 different wines to taste ( as much as we wanted) and a buffet meal. Yum.
Day 4.. 24 hour bus tour time!!!
Got up for breakfast buffet and jumped on the plan topped bus to remember I left my phone in the room. Had to run back and jump on the next one.
