Coventry: City Wall & Gates
A tour of the old City Wall and Gates of Coventry. Despite the ravages of time two of the original twelve gates and some remnants of the Wall remain. Using old and new images, this video shows all of the gates and parts of the wall that still stand. Starting off at Cook Street Gate and ending at Bishop Gate.

In addition to using images from my own collection I once again owe a huge debt of gratitude to Rob Orland for allowing me access to his collection - Cheers!

Lady Herbert's Garden Coventry
Old and new images of this popular spot in the centre of Coventry. The garden and homes are a memorial to Lady Florence Herbert (who died on 25th May 1930) funded by her husband Sir Alfred Herbert. He established the world famous Alfred Herbert Machine Tool Co. in the city in 1887 and as well as the gardens and homes he provided major financial backing for the Herbert Art Gallery & Museum.
The garden contains the most substantial section of the City Wall that has survived the ravages of time. Mason's marks can be seen on some of the stones along with pock-marks caused by exploding bombs during the second world war.
The two remaining City gates (originally there were 12) are at either end of the garden - Swanswell & Cook Street.
As a child I remember my mum taking me here to see the goldfish in the pond. Sadly there are no longer any fish but it is probably just as well as they would only get killed.
The garden has gained quite a bad reputation over the years but on the day I took the now pictures all seemed fine. [ Contrast the Coventry Inspires Peace image with the ones before and after it! ]
The old pictures are postcard scans and images from a booklet entitled Lady Herbert's Garden and Homes Coventry (2nd Edition) which was published some time after WW2 and before 1953. A couple of the postcards belong to Rob Orland so cheers once again to him for giving me permission to use them in this production.
Orange Order Parade Coventry 10 June 2017
4 years after the last parade here, Orangemen & women from across the East & West Midlands joined their brethren from Coventry LOL584 for the Midlands Provincial Grand Orange Lodge Annual Boyne Parade & Service . It began at the War Memorial Park where wreaths were laid at the Cenotaph to honour Britain's war dead, made its way to the Coventry (Protestant) Martyr's Memorial [ 10 people burned at the stake for their faith ] where another wreath was laid and then onto the area outside the Council house for speeches. It then resumed and made its way through part of the city centre before finishing near the Cook Street gate. The bands taking part were Corby Purple Star and Corby Loyalist. The march passed off peacefully.
The Coventry Orange lodge began life in 1952. In 1951, an Anti-Partition (of Ireland) League march took place in the City on St Patrick's Day. A couple of exiled-Ulstermen in the city who were Orangemen responded by forming the lodge. In Northern Ireland, the Coventry Orange Committee was set up to help support the growth of Orange lodges in the English Midlands. For the first parade held in Coventry, on 5 July 1952, hundreds of Orangemen and women from Coventry, Manchester, Corby, Liverpool, Luton, Bedford, Motherwell took part, with support from various lodges in Northern Ireland who came over to take part, accompanied by bands. This was repeated for the next few parades in the 1950s. A Coventry Ulster Association was also set up and it was not uncommon for the serving Prime Minister of Northern Ireland to attend their annual dinner. While all this was going on, upwards of 20,000 (Southern) Irish people from mainly Catholic backgrounds were living and working in Coventry and played a huge part in rebuilding the city following the devastation caused by WW2. During this time many of the big Coventry manufacturing firms advertised skilled jobs in Northern Ireland newspapers read mainly by Protestant/Unionists, so a fair few must have also made their home in Coventry at this time as well.

The International Society of Krishna Consciousness (ISKCON) was incorporated in New York by its Founder-Acharya, His Divine Grace A.C Bhaktivedanta Swami Srila Prabhupada in 28th July 1966 and celebrates its 50th anniversary this year with 52 nationwide events in the United Kingdom. Last week in a gesture of appreciation to the City of London for making the Hare Krishna community feel so welcome, 5,000 anniversary cupcakes were handed out at London’s five major railway stations. The chocolate cupcakes made by Govinda were purely vegetarian, with no eggs and the milk of protected cows, in line with ISKCON’s commitment to Ahimsa.
London’s Rathayatra festival, “the festival of chariots” is one of the largest annual 'Hindu' gatherings in Britain. From the ISKCON temple in Soho, true to historical texts, the unfinished wooden carvings of the Deities, Their Lordships, Sri Sri Jaganatha, Baladeva and goddess Subhadra's grand chariots were pulled by ropes by Their devotees, immobilizing the traffic in the busy streets of London, until They reached Their position outside The National Gallery in Trafalgar Square. It was a colorful and family occasion with tents offering everything from yoga, spiritual information, puppet shows and Deity face painting et cetera. About 20,000 plates of hot prashadam were served made in the kitchens at Bhaktivedanta Manor, cooked by devotees led by Parasurama Das. On the centre stage Avatari Devi, the beautiful dancer with a beautiful soul, performed an Odissi dance and the Mantra Choir team were recording some contributions to their Jayadev mantra, which aimed to combine 1008 singing choices (1008 symbolising the Dharmic and astrologically significant number) in hymnal reverence. Mantra Choir has a website where devotees can add their virtual voice from wherever they are.
The atmosphere was cent per cent festive and the dress code was beyond imagination. It was a rare sunshine day and celebrants were not just in western shorts and T-shirts or saffron/white saris, dhotis and kurtas but also wearing elaborately decorated and accessorised fusions of Indian traditional clothing and British eccentricity worn by both men and women, the effect was jovial and cordial and in the spirit of celebrating diversity and unity, love and peace.
There are about 100,000 Hare Krishna followers in UK, all faith and all creeds are accepted into the community, the idea is to be the best Catholic/ Protestant/ Muslim/ Jew/ Dharmic you can be. ISKCON society values are to live life to render service without taking or expecting anything in return and to have excellent proprieties, all in the name of Lord Krishna, who is the source of everything.
Pragosh Dasa is the head of ISKCON UK and Chairman of ISKCON GBC (Governing Body Commission). The GBC was a committee established by Srila Prabhupada as the ultimate managing authority and to look after the different aspects of the society. Pragosh is from Dublin and like most Irish and many Indians he talks fast and has very good value informatively. Before answering my perfunctory questions about the Hare Krishna movement he told an anecdote about how he was asked in Northern Ireland if he was Catholic or a Protestant disciple of Srila Prabhupada. He also mentioned that the Brexit decision might make it difficult and more expensive to distribute the 1 million books that Hare Krishnas sell over a year. He was concerned about tariffs being imposed on spiritual literature. Pragosh also worries about the concept of a visa. He believes eternal spiritual being are not restricted or bound by geographical demarcation. “If you are a nationalist you are in effect, claiming a land to be yours; proprietorship is fundamental to division and conflict”.
The 48th Central London Ratha Yatra was organized by ISKCON Maidenhead, London. ISKCON Coventry, United Kingdom, also partook in the Ratha Yatra festivities. The Coventry temple is home to the only ISKCON installed Deities in England, outside London and Leicester – Sri Sri Sacinandana and Nitaichand.

16th Mar 2017 - Coventry: Cars, Walls and Arena
More touring Coventry from my week back in the UK in March. A bit of a history lesson this time. Hope you enjoy it. I assure you the sun does shine in Coventry - it's just seems that the days I pick to film always seem to be overcast.
An excellent site for historical information about Coventry:
Some trivia:
The base of the elephant shaped Sport Centre was used as a filming location for Spooks: The Greater Good, along with underneath the ring road. Watch the film and you will see Coventry's recognisable Three Spires in the background.
Full disclosure:
The Gosford Green, wall, gates and Transport Museum were filmed on 16th March. I filmed the Ricoh Arena on 18th March and the Ricoh interiors on 14th March. It was just easier to use the one date for the video title, which is when I did most of the filming.
Muisc:
Jupiter, the Bringer of Jollity by Gustav Holst (from 'The Planets'): performed by Royal Philharmonic Orchestra, conducted by Richard Cooke.
Britain’s Teenage Drug Runners: Gangs In The Countryside
Gang members are using teenage drug runners to transport and sell crack and heroin in the countryside. Police, youth workers and the government are trying to tackle this problem.

Coventry City Medieval Wall discovered by Coventrian Paul Curtis whilst walking through Coventry Bat
Coventry City Medieval Wall was built between 1355 and 1534 to protect Coventry which had became the fourth largest trading town in England exporting it's wool, cloths and yarns to the rest of England, Europe and beyond.
Coventrian Paul Curtis came across this part of the Medieval Wall whilst walking through Cox Street Car Park opposite Coventry City Swimming Baths and now offered Guided Walking, Cycling and Photography Tours around the 2.2 miles of City Wall, the original sites of the 12 Gates and the 20 Towers.
You can find out more by calling Paul on 07846 863604 , Liking the Facebook Page Save Our City Wall or Tweeting us @SaveOurCityWall
