NANTA Kitchen Show South Korea
NANTA is a fabulously funny Korean Cooking Show. It uses mime, music made by kitchen implements and audience participation and is extremely entertaining.
Nanta Cooking Show - Korean Festival 2015 | عرض نانتا
NANTA has been running since October 1997 and is the most popular show ever in Korea. It also has achieved outstanding international success having performed on Broadway and toured widely around the US and the rest of the world. It receives rave reviews wherever it performs and quickly sells out.
Without a dialogue, but through rhythmic banging of knives, pots and pans, NANTA (or Cookin’ as it was known in the States) tells the story of four crazy chefs who have been set the impossible task of making a wedding banquet in just one hour. What follows is pure musical mayhem, and they even manage to fit in a love story! The show is based on Korea’s traditional garak (rhythms) of Samulnori (traditional Korean percussion quartet), and can be enjoyed by all the family.

Nanta Musical Cookin Kitchen Knives Performance in Myeongdong (난타) Seoul, Korea
While visiting Myeongdong I was fortunate enough to witness the free musical 'Cookin' by Nanta performers who were wielding knives, playing drums and a whole host of other things. Myeongdong is typically an area associated with shopping and dining; however, one of my favorite aspects of this area revolves around the many free performances one can often watch. Over the years I've seen clowns doing acrobatic tricks, Halloween performers walking on stilts and a whole host of other events.

Having a chance to see a free performance of Nanta, was icing on the cake. For years, I've been meaning to take in a performance of this highly acclaimed show, but I've always found an excuse not to go. This was finally my opportunity and I was certainly not disappointed.
Overall, It was a superb performance from this highly skilled group of Korean entertainers. Nanta (Korean: 난타) is a extremely popular South Korean musical theatrical performance.
In English, the show is also known as Cookin'.
It first premiered on October 1997 in Hoam Art Hall in Seoul, Korea.
The musical has a simple back story of three cooks attempting to finish preparing a wedding banquet within a strict time limit while the manager installs his incompetent nephew among the kitchen staff.
As a mixture of entertainment and humor, we felt dazzled by the performance while laughing out loud at times.
The show involves acrobatics, magic tricks, comedy, pantomime and audience participation.
The unifying element throughout the musical is the use of traditional Korean samul nori music, which in this case in performed with improvised instruments, such as cutting boards, water canisters and kitchen knives.
The performance is almost completely non-verbal. The very few words which are spoken are mostly in English.
When travelling we're all about random exploring; had we not decided, on the spir of a moment decision, to visit Myeongdong, we surely would have missed out on this opportunity to watch them perform before our very eyes. If you're lucky enough maybe you'll see a Nanta Performance like us.
