2019, NEW VERSION! HONGDAE NANTA!
Shopping in Myeongdong (명동) Seoul, Korea with Nanta Performance | Life in Korea
After visiting the traditional Namdaemun market we quickly turned our attention to nearby Myeongdong which is one of the most popular shopping districts on the North side of Seoul. Only just a short walk from one another it's quite fascinating going from such a traditional Korean market to one that is very modern and trendy. Typically, the area is frequented mostly by young Korean adults but it is also very popular with tourists and expat foreigners. It's the kind of place trendy young Koreans go for people watching, street food and fine dining.

One of the main draws, aside from shopping are the various cultural performances that often take place. We were treated to a Nanta theater performance that showcased a talented group performing culinary theatrics. With expert precision the performers wielded their knives in a very skillful manner dicing, slicing and chopping anything that was on the table. I loved how animated all them looked performing their routines with such charisma and smiles plastered on their faces.
After being mesmerized by the free performance we then wandered around looking for shoes and boots. I was lucky enough to find a pair of red running shoes that were literally the nicest pair I've ever owned; thanks to Audrey for buying me such a nice early birthday present. Feeling tired from our activities for the day, one of the highlights was sharing a giant ice cream soft serve cone. It was the biggest one either of us had ever tried. Other highlights included sampling more street food and jostling with the crowds. This video is from our Life in Korea series:
Here were are in Myeongdong probably the most popular shopping district in all of Seoul. It is more of an upscale place. It is sort of a market type environment where everything is stores and upscale boutiques, clothing shops and expensive restaurants. Swanky this and swanky that.
Come join me for a walk in Myeong Dong.
Look at what we got here. Nice! Is it big enough? Take a bit of that. Take a look at this. I think it is big enough to share. Is that the biggest ice cream you've ever had? Yeah, that is really good.
And here in Myeongdong a little girl having her caricature drawn.
We have Louis Vitton and of course that is a store I can afford.
One of my favorite stores in the world is massive here in Seoul - Forever 21 and we are looking here for boots.

Cooking Nanta Show, South Korea,
Myeongdong Nanta Theatre, Seoul(Myeong-dong, Hongdae)
Cookin' Nanta is a South Korean non-verbal comedy show created and produced by Song Seung-whan and incorporates traditional samul nori rhythm.
The musical has a simple back story of three cooks attempting to finish preparing a wedding banquet within a strict time limit while the manager installs his incompetent nephew among the kitchen staff. The show involves acrobatics, magic tricks, comedy, pantomime and audience participation. The unifying element throughout the musical is the use of traditional Korean samul nori music, which in this case is performed with improvised instruments, such as cutting boards, water canisters and kitchen knives. The performance is almost completely non-verbal. The very few words which are spoken are mostly in English
Nanta is the longest-running show in Korean history. In Korea, it has two private theaters in Seoul(Myeong-dong, Hongdae), one on the island of Jeju, the other in Bangkok, Thailand.

Nanta Musical Cookin Kitchen Knives Performance in Myeongdong (난타) Seoul, Korea
While visiting Myeongdong I was fortunate enough to witness the free musical 'Cookin' by Nanta performers who were wielding knives, playing drums and a whole host of other things. Myeongdong is typically an area associated with shopping and dining; however, one of my favorite aspects of this area revolves around the many free performances one can often watch. Over the years I've seen clowns doing acrobatic tricks, Halloween performers walking on stilts and a whole host of other events.

Having a chance to see a free performance of Nanta, was icing on the cake. For years, I've been meaning to take in a performance of this highly acclaimed show, but I've always found an excuse not to go. This was finally my opportunity and I was certainly not disappointed.
Overall, It was a superb performance from this highly skilled group of Korean entertainers. Nanta (Korean: 난타) is a extremely popular South Korean musical theatrical performance.
In English, the show is also known as Cookin'.
It first premiered on October 1997 in Hoam Art Hall in Seoul, Korea.
The musical has a simple back story of three cooks attempting to finish preparing a wedding banquet within a strict time limit while the manager installs his incompetent nephew among the kitchen staff.
As a mixture of entertainment and humor, we felt dazzled by the performance while laughing out loud at times.
The show involves acrobatics, magic tricks, comedy, pantomime and audience participation.
The unifying element throughout the musical is the use of traditional Korean samul nori music, which in this case in performed with improvised instruments, such as cutting boards, water canisters and kitchen knives.
The performance is almost completely non-verbal. The very few words which are spoken are mostly in English.
When travelling we're all about random exploring; had we not decided, on the spir of a moment decision, to visit Myeongdong, we surely would have missed out on this opportunity to watch them perform before our very eyes. If you're lucky enough maybe you'll see a Nanta Performance like us.
