The BEST Traditional Chilean Food in Santiago, Chile at Peumayen Restaurant
One of our biggest passions while traveling is trying local food! This is hard in Chile, where our inquiries about the best local foods were often met with “wouldn’t you prefer sushi?” or “maybe try going to Peru, they have amazing food there.”
Luckily, there’s an incredible restaurant that lets visitors try traditional Chilean food and local Chilean ingredients! Peumayen is deeply rooted in indigenous Chilean traditions, while still being willing to play, experiment, and be creative. We LOVE this restaurant!
If you’re interested in trying other traditional Chilean foods, we really recommend finding sopaipillas (fried flatbread traditionally made with pumpkin, but now sometimes made with orange dye instead) and mote con huesillos (a popular drink containing soaked wheat and a whole peach). There aren’t many Chilean street foods, at least not compared to places like Thailand and India, but you can find both sopaipillas and mote con huesillos sold by street vendors!
Check out Peumayen here:
Let us know in the comments if you want to see a list of all the bites we tried at Peumayen! We also always want to hear about your suggestions for local foods!

Chorrillana: Typical Chilean Snack in Santiago, Chile
One of the classic Chilean snack food dishes worth trying when visiting Santiago is something called Chorrillana. This dish, which is worth sharing with a friend of two, is basically a mountain of french fries with sliced beef, fried egg and fried onion on top. We've now had it enough times to realize no two restaurants make it the same. We've seen fried egg versus scrambled egg, tenderloin versus sliced sausage and several different ways of preparing the onion. At the restaurant we filmed this video (Galindo) they prepared it with tenderloin, scrambled egg and caramelized onions. We've also heard of chorizo, tomatoes and even bananas being thrown on top of the fries! It's the kind of dish, much like poutine in Canada, where you can play around with it to suit any kind of taste. Regardless, be sure to bring your appetite (and possibly a friend or two) because portions tend to be huge and we struggled to finish ours. You can pick one up in a typical Chilean restaurant or Chilean pub.

Chorrillana: Typical Chilean Snack in Santiago, Chile Travel Video:
So it is time for a little afternoon snack in Santiago. Today we're at a restaurant called Galindo and we're going to be trying a dish that is called Chorrillana. And this is a lot like a Canadian poutine. Now if you're not too familiar with Canadian poutine that is kind of like when you get some French Fries with gravy and cheese and other ingredients over top. So this is going to be similar but with a Chilean twist so we're waiting for the food to arrive now.
Well as you can see the food has arrived and the funny part is this is listed as an appetizer or a starter for one person. If you have a look at that, that is enough to feed two grown people. I think Sam and I are going to struggle with this. It is our main. It is our main. Definitely.
Alright Sam, so it is time to give us the tour of the plate. Yes, so before I tuck into this tasty little treat I'm going to explain what we've got here. So we have tenderloin, onion and scrambled egg on top of those french fries. It is actually a little bit different from the first time we tried Chorrillana because they put a fried egg on top and also sausage. Yes. But this has a lot more meat. This is a very generous portion.
So dig right in hungry boy. Thank you, thank you, thank you. Yeah. Enjoying that meat? Oh, yeah. Wow, those are like really tasty onions. You can tell they've been marinated in something. I think they're caramelized. Yeah, caramelized onions I think. And the french fries are a golden perfection. It is just going to be an awesome filling carb loaded delicious little treat.
So we've had this dish a few times since we've arrived in Santiago and no two Chorrillanas are the same. This one is different, I mean it has no sausage or hot dogs and that was our first experience trying Chorrillanas. And also this one has scrambled eggs instead of fried egg on top. So it is kind of nice that you can always find a bit of variety when you go to a different restaurant. And I think I am ready for my first bite. Got a little bit of everything in there.
Mmmm.
Wow. That meat is tender isn't it? It is tender. It is tenderloin, so it should be tender. It should be tender. Wow. That is nice. In a way it is kind of nice that they only have the beef and there is no sausage because like this is a really good cut of meat. It is very juicy so the flavors really come through. You don't have too many competing tastes. Yeah, you don't need a whole lot of ingredients with this dish. Not when it is done well.
Alright, but now it is time for the big question. Which do you prefer - Canadian poutine or Chilean Chorrillana?
Well, this is really good but you know what nothing compares to Canadian poutine. That is like in a league of its own. But this is really tasty. And if you want come and try it at this restaurant it is going to be just under 8000 Chilean Pesos which currently is about 10 US dollars. So it is not bad value. Bring a friend or two to help you out. That is my tip.

We’ve been more social in Chile and that led us to eat out a lot more. We were getting sick of it when the wonderful cooking classes came up! And we loved it! We had been wanting to do that for a while in a few countries but were too cheap (oops).
We’re so glad we finally took our wallet out and spent on what really matters to us: FOOD!! The homemade kind!
Here’s what we did in Chile, and what you can expect to see more of in the upcoming months!

A Taste of Chile - cooking in Santiago
Chilean cuisine is diverse, heavily influenced by neighbouring Peru and far-flung places like Italy and Germany. We set off with the Uncorked Cooking Workshop to find out more.
Travel Santiago, Chile - Mercado Central (Seafood Restaurant)
See where the locals go for fresh seafood.
Right now we are at Mercado Central, or Central Market. Which is the best place to get seafood. We are only 3 blocks away from Plaza De Armas in the heart of downtown. Look at the fancy iron work. This building is over 100 years old. But the seafood, no more than a day. Chile is famous for its seafood and there is much more than Chilian sea bass.
See that big fish? That's a Chilian sea bass and the fish is actually coming out of his mouth. Here we have giant squid. Or in Spanish Jibia. You can find machas also. Shell fish. You do not believe it is fresh? Look it still has its last dinner in its mouth. What we have here is Picalocos. It is a type of shell fish and it is still alive. You can find it in the Finda Marina which is a Chlian type of soup, that has all the seafood you could imagine.
Here we have king crab or in Spanish, centoya. Very expensive and hard to find. This is adjeso. You can find this prepared here in Chile with lemon, onion and some herbs or they can make a souffle out of it. When they come to the market they are still alive and they have these interesting spines on them. This is what we call locos. You can find it here at the market. Usually it is supposed to be boiled with some mayonnaise. And it is delicious. Here we have beute, it is really high on iodine and it is a vitamin rush. On the sides of the market, next to the seafood stands, you can find some cheaper restaurants.
Be warned, tons of waiters and salesmen will try get you too eat in their restaurants. Just say, No gratias. Fish is not the only thing they sell here. You can also find vegetables, meat and natural herbs. The local tradition is to come here after a party. There is nothing like raw seafood to restore your energy after a night of partying. I am Helia Goodman, showing you Santiago.
Exploring the Markets of Santiago with a Chilean Chef | Mercado Central and more
The next two videos highlight the best experience I have ever had on all my 34947937934 vacations. Gwen and I hired a real live award winning chef to not only take us around the markets of Santiago (Mercado Central, La Vega Central, and the Meat Market)...but then we went back to his Chilean home in the El Golf neighborhood to have a real live cooking lesson where we made the tastiest Chilean (and Mapuche ~ who are the indigenous people of Chile) cuisines.

Travel Chile - Santiago Restaurants - El Parron
A restaurant known for grilled meat in the Providencia neighborhood of Santiago.
Location:
Providencia
Address:
Av. Providencia 1184
Restaurant El Parron is located in the heart of the neighborhood, Providencia. In Spanish, Parron means great great wine and the main dinning hall is covered with it. And it has room for nine hundred people. Now I am going to try the Chilean bina. That is great, it is very smooth and I can feel the ginger in it.
The Kitchen at El Parron has windows, so you can see your food while it is being cooked. El Parron has specialized in grill meat called, Pereira since nineteen thirty six. The Pereira has pork, steak, sausage, inas and potatoes, when you try the pereira, you must be careful. It is served in it is own little barbecue, which is hot.
Here we are with Miguel, he is going to join me for a typical Chilean dinner. Tonight I am eating a traditional Chilean dish pure picante with ribs. It is delicious, especially with red wine. Is it spicy? Only moderately but very good.
Now, I am going to try some steak. Which is called Pla Tierra in Spanish, the steak is in mushroom sauce and it is accompanied with a side dish of rice. This meat is so tender, you can cut it with a fork, chumchuli, a type of sausage. And thenyas. It is not very tender, it is a big top but the special thing about it is that, it is very tasty. You can taste the real beef.
Yes, a reservation is recommended.I am Helia Goodman showing you Santiago.
Chilean Cuisine and Country Brand
Chile is a diverse country in terms of topography, climate, culture and tradition. That variety is reflected in the nation’s cuisine and in its burgeoning culinary scene, as recognized by the international community. For example, the renowned British publication The World´s 50 Best Restaurants ranked Santiago 1st on its list of the world’s top five foodie destinations for 2016.
