Helen Georgia 2014 Balloon Festival
Helen Georgia is once again celebrating the most colorful event of the year, Helen to the Atlantic Balloon Race & Festival.
The South's oldest balloon event and the United States' only long distance hot air balloon race will begin (weather permitting) with a mass ascension of 30 bright and colorful hot air balloons, in North Georgia's Alpine Village - Helen. Race competitors and local flyers will take to the sky at 7:00 am, Thursday, June 5, 2014. If the weather conditions are too windy or storms are forecast, the take off will be postponed until conditions are acceptable.
The people of Helen believe that Helen, Georgia is the center of their world and in Columbus' day the Atlantic Ocean was the edge of the Earth. Thus, Pete Hodkinson came up with the concept for the Helen to the Atlantic Balloon Race. The race begins in Helen and the finish line is I-95 (anywhere between Maine and Miami). The shortest distance is 225 miles and the race usually takes two days. It has been done in one day, while some races have taken as many as four days. Six to ten balloons will be competing in the cross country race.
It is a race where both the pilot's and crew's skills are challenged. A balloon can only go the same speed and direction as the wind. The pilot must find the altitude which gives him/her the best speed as well as direction towards the finish line. The race becomes a crew event as well, since the balloons are limited to 40 gallons of fuel (propane). Forty gallons is approximately enough fuel to last 4 hours, so the balloons have to land for refueling. If the crew is not there immediately with fresh tanks, valuable time is lost while the pilot and crew try to find each other.
The winner is the first person to cross I-95, or whoever is ahead at sunset on Friday, June 6, 2014.
While the competition to the Atlantic continues, other balloonist compete in local events beginning Thursday evening around 6:00 pm. Local flying events will take place also on Friday and Saturday. The balloons will fly around 7:30 am and 6:00 pm each day (weather permitting). The balloons will only fly for around 1 to 2 hours. There will be many opportunities available to the public; assisting with the inflations, being a part of a chase crew, taking a tethered ride in a balloon or a champagne flight over the mountains. There will be approximately 20 - 25 balloons flying locally.
Schedule:
June 5 7:00 am lift-off for Helen to the Atlantic Balloon Race & Mass Ascension
6:30 pm local balloon event
June 6 7:00 am local balloon event
6:30 pm local balloon event
June 7 7:00 am local balloon event

****** ALL BALLOON EVENTS ARE WEATHER DEPENDENT *******

Summer Fun at Helen Georgia!
Helen, Georgia was a good weekend getaway. There's lots of things to do with the family. We went to Anna Ruby Falls, did the river tubing with the Helen Tubing, and had a fun round of golf at the Pirate's Cove Putt Putt Golf.
The town of Helen, GA was a really nice place to walk around, eat and shop. It's like a small German town up in the mountains. Most if not all of the buildings matched which made it even more unique. There's horse carriage rides, home made ice creams, nice parks and more to do.
Anna Ruby falls was a good hike and a nice waterfall to go see. It's nice because the path is actually paved and you can actually push a stroller easily.
We did the Helen Tubing, which were the pink tubes, but it took us over two hours. The river level was pretty low that day and we got stuck on lots of rocks. We had to get out multiple times to push the tube off rocks and into deeper water. Most of the way, the water was only about a foot or so deep. It took us quite a long time to get to the exit point because of the water level. We couldn't just sit back, be lazy and let the river take us down the river. Next time, I think we'll check to make sure the water level is high before going river tubing again.
At the Pirate's Cove Golf Adventure Putt Putt, the kids were able to enjoy 18 rounds of golf in no time. The themed putt putt golf had a small waterfall, cave and more. They even had a pond with lots of golf fish.
We would like to go to Helen, GA again next year but we'll wait until the river is higher so we can enjoy the river tubing even more.

Zip lining Adventure in Helen, GA
Spend an afternoon in North Ga with Nacoochee Adventures and their Zip Lines. It's fun for friends and families, plus they have the longest dual zip line in the United States!
Nacoochee Adventures has several canopy tours to choose from whether you want a little bit of history with your zip line adventure (Goldmine canopy tour) or you just want to get down to business of swinging through the trees (Moonshine canopy tour). We did the latter zip line tour and I felt that the four lines were plenty to get my adrenaline going. I’d guess we were up there for about 1.5 to 2 hours.
The zip lining was exhilarating and I never once felt scared after I did the first line. Truth be told, those first four zips were just a build up to what Nacoochee Adventures appropriately names the Big Zip Intimidator – a half mile long dual zip line where you zip alongside your partner.
