Wendover is a market town at the foot of the Chiltern Hills in Buckinghamshire, England. It is also a civil parish within Aylesbury Vale district. The mainly arable parish is 5,832 acres (2,360 ha) in size and contains many hamlets that nestle in amongst the lush forest on the surrounding hills. It lies between the picturesque villages of Ellesborough and Aston Clinton.
In 1086 the manor of Wendovre was in the hundred of Aylesbury, with William the Conqueror as its tenant in chief. The parish church of St Mary is outside the town to the east on the hillside: a feature that is very common among towns with strong Celtic origins. There is a distinctive red brick, spired clock tower at the crossroads in the centre of the town that was built in 1842. The tree lined Aylesbury Street includes the 16th-century timber framed Chiltern House and 18th-century Red House.
There is still a row of houses in the town today, known as Anne Boleyn's Cottages. The town is the birthplace of Gordon Onslow Ford, British surrealist artist, and it is believed to be the birthplace of the medieval chronicler Roger of Wendover. The town is also the birthplace of Cecilia Payne, the astronomer who first showed that the Sun is mainly composed of hydrogen.
The town is at the terminus of the Wendover Arm of the Grand Union Canal, which joins Tring summit level of the Grand Union main line beside Marsworth top lock. Disused for over a century, the arm is in course of being restored by the Wendover Arm Trust. Remote and rural for almost all its length, the canal attracts much local wildlife.
Today the town is very popular with commuters working in London. The popularity is due partly to the town's easy access to London by rail, partly to Wendover railway station, served by Chiltern Railways from London Marylebone via Amersham on the London to Aylesbury Line, and partly because it is so picturesque.
Facilities in the village centre include a Post Office Ltd, several hairdressers, a community library (run by volunteers), Whitewater's deli & cafe, Lloyds Pharmacy, and a charity shop. Wendover also plays host to the 'Coombe Hill Run' which usually occurs on the 1st Sunday of June every year. It begins and ends in the village and encompasses two very steep climbs up the Hill to the monument along with a very steep decline. Legend states that a boy from Wendover can only become a man once he has completed the course for the first time
By virtue of its geography, sitting in a gap in the Chiltern Hills and a designated Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, Wendover has much to offer both local people and visitors wishing to explore the local countryside. The frequent train service from London Marylebone makes it an ideal destination for a day trip to the country. The ancient Ridgeway National Trail, a highly popular 85-mile walking route that extends from Avebury to Ivinghoe, passes along Wendover High Street. Apart from the Ridgeway Trail there are 33 miles of public rights of way and bridleways criss-crossing the parish. These paths will take you over the open chalk downland of Coombe Hill, Buckinghamshire, home to Britains longest surviving geocache, with its elegant monument to the Buckinghamshire men who died in the Boer War, or walk to the pretty hamlet of Dunsmore in the spring and enjoy the carpet of bluebells, or enjoy the shaded woods on Haddington Hill and Boddington Hill, belonging to Forest Enterprise (known locally as 'Wendover Woods'). Mountain bikers make use of specially prepared cycle routes throughout the Woods, which also feature walking trails for walkers of various ability as well as barbecue sites and play areas for children. Close to Boddington hill there are the remains of an Iron Age hill fort.

For most of human history, war memorials were erected to commemorate great victories; remembering the dead was a secondary concern. Coombe Hill Monument is one of the first and largest examples of a war memorial erected to honour the names of individual men who fell whilst fighting for their country. The monument is an iconic Buckinghamshire landmark and a Grade II Listed monument. At 260m above sea level, it sits on one of the highest and most striking spurs of the Chilterns, commanding a wide view of the Vale of Aylesbury. On a clear day it can be seen from the Berkshire Downs and Salisbury Plain to the south-west and the Cotswolds to the west. The view overlooks Chequers, the country home of the Prime Minister.

Abandoned Church - Buckinghamshire, England
All that remains of the deserted medieval village of Fleet Marston, is the abandoned church of St. Mary. The building dates back to the 12th or 13th centuries, and was declared redundant back in 1972 , and so was sealed up and left. The church still stands today and is cared for by the Churches Conservation Trust.

Ex-hurricane Bertha over the Vale of Aylesbury viewed from Coombe Hill
This video was featured in the Channel 4 documentary
She was called Bertha as storm names alternate between male and female throughout the season, starting at A and continuing through the alphabet. It passed over the Bahamas on Tuesday, becoming stronger as it moved north and east.
From the Bahamas Bertha moved up the east coast of the US towards New York where it was called a tropical storm. It then moved across the Atlantic Ocean to head towards Europe it was called an Atlantic storm. Its movement was made possible because a jet stream is propelling the storm towards the UK at speeds of up to 100mph. Hurricane Bertha: Britain set for weather hell as torrential rain causes flood chaosTwo inches of rain is expected to fall in a matter of hours.
Weather experts expect Bertha to arrive in Britain on Sunday morning, hitting Devon first. Forecasters have likened the affects of Bertha to St Jude. Gusts of up to 70mph were predicted. Predictions also include localised flooding with coastal areas under threat due to already high tides.
Forecasters have predicted a month's rain to fall in a few hours - with some areas seeing 1.9 inches of rain. August's average is 2.2 inches.
The Met Office has issued a yellow warning - which means to be aware that the weather may worsen - to the following areas: Central, Tayside and Fife, East Midlands, East of England, Grampian, Highlands and Eilean Siar, London and South East England, North East England, North West England, Orkney and Shetland, South West Scotland, Lothian Borders, South West England, Strathclyde, Wales, West Midlands, Yorkshire and Humber.

Waddesdon Manor is a country house in Aylesbury Vale, Buckinghamshire, England
Waddesdon Manor is a country house in the village of Waddesdon, in Buckinghamshire, England. It is located in the Aylesbury Vale, 6.6 miles (10.6 km) west of Aylesbury. The Grade I listed house was built in the Neo-Renaissance style of a French château between 1874 and 1889 for Baron Ferdinand de Rothschild (1839–1898) as a weekend residence for grand entertaining and as a setting for his collection.
The last member of the Rothschild family to own Waddesdon was James de Rothschild (1878–1957). He bequeathed the house and its contents to the National Trust. It is now managed by the Rothschild Foundation chaired by Jacob Rothschild, 4th Baron Rothschild. It is one of the National Trust's most visited properties, with over 390,000 visitors annually.[1] Waddesdon Manor won Visit England's Large Visitor Attraction of the Year

On 17 November 2017 a mid-air collision between an aeroplane and a helicopter lead to the Waddesdon Manor air incident.Prior to the construction of Waddesdon Manor, no house existed on the site. Ferdinand de Rothschild wanted a house in the style of the great Renaissance châteaux of the Loire Valley.[26] Ferdinand chose as his architect Gabriel-Hippolyte Destailleur.[27] Destailleur was already experienced in working in this style, having overseen the restoration of many châteaux in that region, in particular that of the Château de Mouchy.
Through Destailleur's vision, Waddesdon embodied an eclectic style based on the châteaux so admired by his patron, Baron Ferdinand. The towers at Waddesdon were based on those of the Château de Maintenon, and the twin staircase towers, on the north facade, were inspired by the staircase tower at the Château de Chambord.[28] However, following the theme of unparalleled luxury at Waddesdon, the windows of the towers at Waddesdon were glazed, unlike those of the staircase at Chambord. They are also far more ornate.
The structural design of Waddesdon was not all retrospective. Hidden from view were the most modern innovations of the late 19th century including a steel frame, which took the strain of walls on the upper floors, which consequently permitted the layout of these floors to differ completely from the lower floors.[29] The house also had hot and cold running water in its bathrooms, central heating, and an electric bell system to summon the numerous servants. The building contractor was Edward Conder & Son.[30]
After the Manor was completed in 1883, Ferdinand quickly decided it was too small. The Bachelors' Wing to the east was extended after 1885 and the Morning Room, built in late-Gothic style, was added to the west after 1888.[31] The stables to the west of the Manor were built in 1884. Ferdinand and his stud groom devised the plan, working with Conder. Destailleur designed the façades in a French 17th-century style.[32]

The Wine Cellars in the Manor were created during the Centenary Restoration and opened in 1994. They are modeled on the private cellars at Château Lafite Rothschild. More than 15,000 bottles are stored in the Cellars, some 150 years old, the majority from the Château Lafite Rothschild and Château Mouton Rothschild estates. It is the largest private collection of Rothschild wines in the world. There are also wine labels designed by artists such as Salvador Dali and Andy Warhol.[33]
