Coombs Country Candy
I rode and the dogs ran from the McLean Mill over to Coombs Country Candy and back this morning. Around 18 kilometers all in. We talked with a lady that we met yesterday when were out hiking. She was riding from Stamp River Provincial Campgrounds over the Alberni Hump and to Parksville! Wow! She must have been in her late sixties! She said she had just saw a Cougar (Mountain Lion, not a 40 something divorcee). Damn it, we missed it again! 'Cause there's a cat out there. A big one! Ha, ha. Well, Coombs Candy is at the gateway to Port Alberni and the Log Train Trail we ride. They serve up all sorts of sugary treats but we just looked at the traffic and drank some 'Crick water. The coming and going to Tofino. Surfs up dude.

Top 12 stops on your way to Ucluelet and Tofino, BC
These are my top 12 stops to make on your way to Ucluelet and Tofino, BC. If I missed anything be sure to add it in the comment section below.
12. The Abyss in Nanaimo, BC. The Abyss is a large crack in the ground caused by an earthquake. The Abyss is about 16 inches wide and two hundred meters long. It's an easy 30 minute walk from the road and such a neat spot. If you've ever wanted to see want a earthquake can do up close and in person this is a must visit.
11. Top Bridge Regional Trail in Parksville, BC. This quant little park 5 minutes off the highway is a nice spot to stop and relax. Loaded with beautiful nature features, the Englishman River and lots of trails this is a easy stop to make.
10. Englishman River Falls Provincial Park. This stop is a 30 minute drive out of the way but I felt like I had to include it. The upper falls is located 5 minutes from the parking lot and just a beautiful site to see. Multiple trails with the Lower Falls a short 30 minute hike from the parking lot. Here you'll find some nice spots for cliff jumping and crystal clear water. If you have the time consider camping at the Englishman River Falls Provincial Campground.
9. Goats on the Roof in Coombs, BC. This tourist attraction has long been a highlight in the region. It's exactly how it sounds, it's a country market with goats on the roof but there's a lot more to see and do here. You can also visit the multiple other business in the area such a Billy G Donuts, Billy's Ice Cream shop, there's a candy shop plus the statue cemetery.
8. Little Qualicum Falls Provincial Park. This is another park located 5 minutes off the highway. Another easy stop with beautiful walking trails.
7. Macmillan Provincial Park. Just pasted Cameron Lake you'll find yourself driving through Macmillan Provincial Park. This park is loaded with huge west coast trees, tons of unbelievable spots to take pictures and one of British Columbia most visited parks.
6. The Hole in the Wall in Port Alberni. This man made hole isn't a big tourist attraction yet but I think it could be. It a great spot for more pictures and the peaceful creek that runs though here will definitely have a calming effect.
5. The city of Port Alberni. This city was actually a lot bigger and nicer than I expected. Definitely stop here and pick up anything you'll need here. Food, propane, gasoline everything in Port Alberni will be cheaper then what you find in Ucluelet and Tofino, BC.
4. The Twin City Brewery Company in Port Alberni. This brewery was located just one block off the highway and they had an excellent selection of food and drink options.
3. Coombs Country Candy in Port Alberni. The sign is hard to miss. Just before you get into the city of Port Alberni you'll see this one of a kind candy shop. Everything's handmade, delicious and a little expensive. It's worth visiting.
2. Sproat Lake just outside Port Alberni. There are several lake you can stop on your way to Ucluelet and Tofino, BC. Cameron Lake just before Macmillan Provincial Park and Kennedy Lake just before you get into Ucluelet but we stop at Sproat Lake. Any of the three lakes are a must visit.
1. Wally Creek. Right along the Pacific Rim Highway you'll come across Wally Creek. A local landmark and great place to stop and relax just before you get into Ucluelet and Tofino.

This past week we visited the remote town of Bamfield B.C. on the most western side of the island, south of Ucluelet. and camped at Pachena Bay Campground. It is an incredibly challenging road to get to Bamfield. We stopped on the way just outside of Port Alberni at Coombes Country Candy for treats for the road. Their chocolate was so smooth and delicious. They also have sugar free chocolate.
We drove through Cathedral Grove. It is crazy busy at Cathedral Grove in the middle of the summer!
The drive into Bamfield is a big deal. It is 50 miles or 80 km of logging roads. It took us more than 2 hours in our old mazda protege. Most people drive all wheel drive and four by four vehicles to get through to Bamfield.
We arrived in Pachena Bay and Bamfield late in the afternoon to a beautiful fog and I finally understand what they mean by Fogust on the west side of the island. Fogust means fog in August.
I actually do a chicken dance on a log in this video.
Our first full day in Bamfield we took a water taxi to Bamfield West and went to visit Brady Beach. There is a beautiful boardwalk all along the water in Bamfield West, then you walk across the island on dirt roads. Brady’s beach is so beautiful and charming. We explored and laid in the hammock.
Pachena Bay Campground is super awesome, clean and I highly recommend it. The way the fog rolls in during August, it seemed it would dump the moisture in the form of rain on the waterfront campgrounds. So, I was pretty happy we didn’t have a waterfront campsite.
Thank you so much for watching. Please like, subscribe and leave your comments. We will see you next week.

Another hike video. This one is with a few new friends from Nanaimo's Activity Crew *Van Island* (facebook). The Alberni Inlet trail. This is just the first part of the trail that eventually leads to China Creek Marina. I haven't been to the end. I have done this loop several times. I give some directions to get to the look out view point (hard route loop), however the video was getting long so cut out the return trip.Unfortunately the signs on the posts have been taken. WHY? The head of the trail can be found with google maps. The trail head is at the junction of Anderson Ave and Franklin river Rd. If you like trail running this is a great loop. It took 2:22:00 to complete. 5.9mi, Highest elevation is 944ft and lowest is 36ft. Also try the Anglers trail out Stamp Falls and the lookout from Coombs Country Candy at the bottom of the hump as you come into Port Alberni.
Happy Trails.

Next time I need to take off the hard case on my Gopro, the audio gets muffled and every movement makes a lot of clunking noises. I spent 80% of my edits just dampening the noises from the case, sorry about that!
