Parker Coonawarra Estate Wines | Winery | Vineyard, Coonawarra, South Australia Wine Guide - WBTL
This singular Coonawarra estate established by John Parker in 1985 produced some great wines during the 1990s, but only very recently added its own winemaking facility. The wines are made by Peter Lehmann . The focus of production is a single premium wine only made in top vintages – a Bordeaux-like approach that is also reflected in the provocative name, Terra Rossa First Growth. In other years (unlike Médoc classed growths) only the second wine, Terra Rossa Cabernet Sauvignon, is released. First Growth is based on Cabernet Sauvignon but also includes Merlot and Cabernet Franc and is aged in 100% new French oak. It is fully ripe and concentrated, if at times a little oaky, with an intense pure fruit core wed to ripe but powerful, textured tannins – it takes the best part of a decade to unfurl. The second wine, which is now aged exclusively in French oak, has recently been only a shade behind, nudging 4 stars. A Merlot is also made but is only available in very small quantities direct from the winery. Entry level wines under the Coonawarra Series label include a Cabernet Sauvignon and a Shiraz.

Cabernet Sauvignon Wine from Coonawarra, Australia - McGuigan Shortlist
Neil McGuigan of McGuigan Wines joins Majestic Wine to taste his Shortlist Cabernet Sauvignon, a limited production wine available exclusively at Majestic and a wine from the Coonawarra region -
This beautiful Coonawarra Cabernet comes from the 2009 vintage. What we're trying to do with our Cabernet Sauvignon is we're not trying to make Aussie Dry Red from Cabernet Sauvignon. We're trying to make varietal cabernet. As a result, we're all about fruit on the nose, and this wine shows beautiful cassis, rhubarb, and some cherry characters on the nose, just with a hint of oak as well, so it's in the varietal style of Cabernet Sauvignon.
The palette with this one is all about structure. The palette with good cabernets is all about structure. It's got length, it's got refinement, it's got beautiful tannin on the inside of the gums, but not aggressive. It has beautiful warmth, obviously coming from the Australian sun, and it's a wine that has great texture. Also, the wine, by the structure of the wine, you can feel that it's quite firm on the middle of the palette, which means that it's going to age gracefully. It's a wine that you could consume now or in the next 4 to 5 years, and it would be fantastic with roast beef on the rarer side rather than on the well-done side.
