Discovering Cooper Marsh
Cooper Marsh is a provincially significant Class 1 wetland that was restored in the early 1980s. The Cooper Marsh Conservation Area includes three wetland enclosures. In the main wetland enclosure there are two boardwalks. In the eastern section of the main wetland enclosure there is a newly reconstructed boardwalk which has been widened and made wheelchair accessible. A new viewing platform has been created next to the visitor's centre. Come and walk the boardwalks that take you within the Marsh and also view the diverse wildlife from our blinds and viewing platforms. You will enjoy this hidden jewel in Eastern Ontario.
Summer at the Cooper Marsh Conservation Area (South Lancaster, ON - August 2015)
Cooper Marsh Conservation Area is located 18 kilometers east of Cornwall, Ontario. It contains a portion of one of the largest marshes in Eastern Ontario, the Charlottenburgh Marsh. This marsh sits along the north shore of Lake St. Francis, a widening of the St. Lawrence River. It is operated by the Raisin River Conservation Authority.
Many bird species either call the marsh home, or visit during migration periods. During this visit, sparrows could be spotted, among other birds of flight. Meanwhile, the most visible insect was the bumblebee. The wind picked up several times during my walk, causing the tall cattail grass to sway back and forth, making for an almost hypnotic scene to record.
The marsh itself is not the only interesting landscape that can be viewed within the Cooper Marsh Conservation Area. There is a low-lying sliver of land within the province of Quebec on the opposite shore, with the international border running east and west. To the south of the international border is New York State, which contains the Adirondack Mountain range. Some very nice views can be found of the Adirondacks from the middle of the Cooper Marsh.
