Learn about the National Trust for Historic Preservation, Foothill Partners and the City of Monterey's efforts to preserve barns at the historic Cooper-Molera complex, built in 1827. They will get a seismic retrofit and eventually be available as event space.

Cooper-Molera Adobe is located in downtown Monterey, California. This remarkable place represents the layered history of the families who lived in and built Monterey, from its early years as the political and commercial capitol of Mexican Alta, California, through the development of the State of California. Later, it became known as the center of a region known for both agricultural innovation and historic preservation.

ART IN THE ADOBES Festival 2012, Monterey, CA

The Art in the Adobes Festival is a unique event combining Monterey's historic art collections and buildings. This year's theme was Rediscovery: Monterey Peninsula Artists at Home and Abroad.

There aren't too many places with the number of historic sites that are found in Monterey. The early California adobes downtown and the historic cannery buildings on the oceanfront of Cannery Row combine with the vibrant and colorful stories of immigrants, artists, writers and political figures to create a rich Californian tapestry.

There are several walking tours that pass by historic districts in Monterey. This video shows a preview of some of the important structures you can see and tour.

Monterey County by land, sea, and air

Monterey County is one of the wonders of the California coast. A huge peninsula jutting into the Pacific, it has beautiful little towns, the spectacular and peaceful Monterey Bay, and nearly limitless outdoor adventure options within one easily accessed area.

Our crew checked it out via land, sea, and air—surfing Carmel Beach, diving in Monterey Bay, and hang gliding and skydiving over Marina State Beach and the entire peninsula. They also biked the Monterey Bay Coastal Recreation Trail and climbed throughout Pinnacles National Park.

Archaeology of the 1680 Pueblo Revolt
Recent archaeological research casts new light on the aftermath and changes wrought by this transformative event.
Michael Wilcox joined the Department of Cultural and Social Anthropology at Stanford University in 2001 as an Assistant Professor. His dissertation, entitled “The Pueblo Revolt of 1680: Communities of Resistance, Ethnic Conflict and Alliance Formation Among Upper Rio Grande Pueblos,” articulates the social consequences of subordination, and explores the processes of boundary maintenance at both regional and communal levels. During his graduate studies at Harvard, he was very involved in strengthening the Harvard University Native American Program and in designing and teaching award-winning courses in Native American Studies.

His recent publications include: The Pueblo Revolt and the Mythology of Conquest: An Indigenous Archaeology of Contact, University of California Press (2009) (book blog at: Marketing Conquest and the Vanishing Indian: An Indigenous Response to Jared Diamond’s Guns, Germs, and Steel and Collapse; Journal of Social Archaeology, Vol. 10, No. 1, 92-117 (2010); Saving Indigenous Peoples From Ourselves: Separate but Equal Archaeology is Not Scientific Archaeology”, American Antiquity 75(2), 2010; NAGPRA and Indigenous Peoples: The Social Context, Controversies and the Transformation of American Archaeology, in Voices in American Archaeology: 75th Anniversary Volume of the Society for American Archaeology, edited by Wendy Ashmore, Dorothy Lippert, and Barbara J. Mills (2010).

Professor Wilcox’s main research interests include Native American ethnohistory in the American Southwest; the history of Pueblo Peoples in New Mexico; Indigenous Archaeology; ethnic identity and conflict; DNA, race and cultural identity in archaeology and popular culture; and the political and historical relationships between Native Americans, anthropologists and archaeologists.
