Copsa Mare - The fortified church, Sibiu, Romania
As it happened with many other churches, the basilica of Copşa Mare underwent several additions and alterations throughout the years, mainly brought about by the economic and political changes in Transylvania. One example of such an economic change is the 15th century award to the settlement for the right to hold weekly fairs and a special one on St. Bartholomew's day.
Because of this, the people of Grosskopisch (as its German name was called) wanted to have a church as beautiful as the one in the neighbouring town of Biertan, which enjoyed similar economic privileges. Certain details and construction techniques seem to indicate that some of the men who worked on the Biertan building site, also worked at Copşa Mare. Further support for this hypothesis, is that the year indicated for the completion of the works on the choir is 1519, only four years after the works at Biertan had finished.
The fortification
The defensive mantle wall was erected at the beginning of the 16th century. On its north corner, there is an almost square-planned tower, equipped with machicolations similar to the ones at Biertan. An almost identical tower stands on the south-western corner of the precinct. The storage rooms built along the wall were later dismantled.

Saes - The fortified church, Mures, Romania
The phenomenon of fortified churches, met in the territory colonized by the Saxons in southern Transylvania, is unique in Europe's architecture both as a scale and by the architectural diversity of solutions adopted. It is estimated that there were around 300 castles. Some of them have disappeared and others are endangered, as is that of Brateiu. Seven of these churches have been declared monuments of heritage, being included on the UNESCO list. Currently, several organizations are trying to restore some churches in order to save from oblivion the remains of Saxon culture The causes of building so many fortified churches are related to defense planning issues against migratory peoples. Initial measures of protection were primitive: deep ditches, with or without water, earth or wood fences, etc. During the 14th-16th centuries Saxon communities built castles, small sized, but strongly reinforced. Most of them used as the central point the church - because it was the most sustainable and well-located building in the area, but also because The Lord's name is the tower, the righteous one runs into it and stays safe. Besides the belfry there were built other towers, often by the guilds of the craftsmen who also had the duty to defend them when needed. There were guard towers, mouths for fire or throwing oil, secret passages.
In the church the medieval man felt protected by the deity. By a papal decree issued by Pope Nicholas II, people pursued by the authorities, criminals and debtors could be housed in churches, and if someone used force to enter was excommunicated. That is why the church was considered a refuge of maximum security.
The village of Saes was first mentioned in 1301 and the fortified church in 1302. The church was rebuilt in 1802.

Brateiu - The fortified church, Sibiu, Romania
Brateiu (Pretai in German, Pretoa in Saxon, Bátárhely in Hungarian) is located onto the valley of Târnava Mare river, 5 km from Mediaş, on the Mediaş-Sighişoara highway. Brateiu was founded by Saxon colonists and was first mentioned in a document of 1283, which governed the relationships between Petru, the bishop of Alba Iulia Chapter, and the priests of Mediaş Chapter. The German name Price and the Romanian name Brateiu have their etymology in the Latin word protodiaconus, which also gave the Hungarian name of the settlement, Bátárhely (Village of the monk).
On Brateiu's territory there is one of the most representative fortified churches in Transylvania. Like most of the monuments alike, the medieval church of Brateiu, which in the past also had the role of peasant fortress, only appears in historians' documents and books. It is in a state that requires a rapid intervention of the authorities to be saved from destruction.
Fortified church building took place in the 14th century. It has three ships and a belfry flanked by those two lateral ships. The changes made in time have distorted the symmetric plan of the church, among other things through the ascension of the outer wall of the south ship. Among the latest changes to the church is included the replacement of the arch with a ceiling with molding in 1846. The current shrine dates from the 16th century. The entrenchment surrounding the monument dates from about the same time as the major changes to the church. The battlements and the guard road of the old wall of the premises were not kept. There still exist the counterforts that supports it at regular intervals. The fortifications consist of a floor of wall with holes for oil and battlements. The belfry, where the hundreds of years old bells are stored, is provided with a gallery of wooden fence. Only the northern ship of the entire church has been preserved unchanged. Of high artistic value is the gothic font of the 15th century, built of limestone.
In the sacristy is kept the epitaph of the priest Johannes Hermanus, died on May 21st 1592. The defense wall is oval-shape and adjusts to the terrain. In the north there is a steep lowering towards Târnava Mare river, in the west there is a deep trench, the south and east parts are defended by a massive square tower, which is also the gateway. Today the wall is not of the original height and has no railing anymore. The gate tower now has the appearance of an old Roman tower.
