Othello Tunnels Hike near Hope, B.C.
Full guide:
The Othello Tunnels, near Hope, B.C., are a part of the historic Kettle Valley Railway. The Othello Tunnels were originally built in 1914. The railway was decommissioned in 1961. This particular section became the Coquihalla Canyon Provincial Park in 1986.
The incredible geology of the canyon and inventive engineering of the tunnels make this a popular place to explore. The Othello Tunnels, 5 in total, are carved through steep canyon walls. Two trestles connecting the tunnels are built over the Coquihalla River, which snakes its way thunderously through the canyon down below.

We are on our way back home! Today we leave Langley, BC for the ten hour drive back to Alberta. Don't worry though, we were sure to make a stop in Coquihalla Canyon Provincial Park to hike the Othello Tunnels & enjoy the canyon views!
It has been quite the adventure, but entirely worth the drive. Stick around & enjoy the scenery as we explore the Canadian Rocky Mountains, Banff National Park, Stanley Park, Othello Tunnels & more!

1. Where do you live?: I am based in Edmonton, Alberta & was born & raised in Peterborough, Ontario ... Canada ;)

3. How do you make money?: Again, all of my income is currently through TL Travel (not youtube.) The content that I create is simply to share my passion with all of you, but of course I am always open to collaborations & other related opportunities.
4. What editing program do you use?: Premier Pro CS6
5. What camera do you use?: For nicer shots and a lot of my vlogs I film with the Canon 70D. When I am on the road & need a bit more waterproof/ drop proof abilities I film with both GoPro & the Olympus Stylus Tough TG-3

6. Did you go to university?: I did. I went to Trent University in Peterborough, Canada & got my BA in Cultural Studies. Everything else unrelated I learned by myself on the internet.
7. How long does it take to edit 1 video?: It is different from one video to another but on average I spend around 2 hours editing each video from start to finish.
8. What are your favorite countries to visit?: I have many favorites but right now Thailand, Nicaragua & Indonesia are at the top of my list of fav.'s
9. What countries are on your bucket list?: New Zealand & India are two that I can't wait to visit one day.
10. What youtubers do you watch?: I watch a ton of different vloggers but Fun For Louis & Raya are 2 of my favorites along with Ben Brown and Craig & Aimee.

Absolutely amazing and The Othello Tunnels would rate near the top of my favorite things to see in British Columbia, and although we live near the Kettle Valley Railway Trestles, I like the Coquihalla Canyon Provincial Park at Hope better, although both have spectacular scenery.

Day 4 at Coquihalla Campground , Hope, Canada. Most of the day we spend traveling to pick up my uncle Alvin at Vancouver International airport. We then drove back 2 hours the camp site. During the day we deiced to show my Alvin and my grandpa Coquihalla Canyon Provincial Park to see a abandoned train tunnel with ghosts?

The Othello Tunnels are a great little hike near the town of Hope, British Columbia. Located along the Coquihalla River in Coquihalla Canyon Provincial Park, the short trail follows a section of the abandoned railbed of the Kettle Valley Railway. The walk takes you through 5 tunnels and along beautiful sections of the Coquihalla River.

The Ladner Creek Trestle hike is along small section of the historic Kettle Valley Railway. The trailhead is accessed from a pullout along the Coquihalla Highway, between Hope and the Coquihalla Summit.

Othello Tunnels in Hope British Columbia Canada
Coquihalla Canyon Provincial Park, popularly called The Othello Tunnels is a provincial park located near Hope, British Columbia focused on the canyon of the Coquihalla River and a decommissioned railway grade, now a walking trail, leading eventually to Coquihalla Pass. Originally part of the Kettle Valley Railway, five tunnels and a series of bridges follow a relatively straight line through the gorge, which is lined with sheer, flat rock cliffs.
The park's fantastic rock cliffs and relative close distance to Vancouver has resulted in many popular movies being filmed there. Rambo: First Blood, Shoot to Kill, The Adventures of Yellow Dog and Cabin in the Woods were all filmed in Coquihalla Canyon.
The location is easily recognizable when watching Rambo: First Blood where Sylvester Stallone hangs off the cliff while a helicopter tries to snipe him down.

The Othello Tunnels were abandoned after the Kettle Valley Railway stopped running in the 1960's. The Coquihalla Canyon provincial park was established to help preserve the tunnels and make them accessible to visitors, making this one of the most spectacular day trips in the Vancouver area.

today we're at Coquihalla Canyon Provincial Park to
check out the Othello Tunnels

getting to the tunnels is easy it's just
a short walk from the nearby parking area

in 1914 engineers blasted five tunnels
through solid granite to complete the
construction of the Kettle Valley railway line
so just entering the tunnel here now and
you can see that this is blasted just
right out of solid rock four of these
tunnels are true tunnels one of the
tunnels is actually not a true tunnel
because it has open air windows and
light on the side we'll check that one
out in a minute

they do recommend that
you bring a flashlight along because it
is quite dark in here there's no natural
light at this point and no artificial
light either so make sure you bring a
flashlight if you're going to explore
the tunnels

so inside the tunnel I'm getting
hit with drops of moisture makes me
|wonder about the overall stability of
the tunnel and whether or not there's a
bit of a rockfall hazard

as well just emerging from the first tunnel and up
ahead you can actually see the next two
tunnels the next one is blasted right
out of the granite and the one further
down you can see it's been reinforced
with an archway

the tunnel lock provides
spectacular views of the Coquihalla
Canyon and the Coquihalla River running
through it it's actually a nice cool
place to visit in the summertime because
of the the running water

up on the roof you can see the steel
beams that have been added for
reinforcement as well as the wire mesh
that have been added for safety in case

of rock falls the tunnels are connected
by a series of wooden trestles these
aren't the original trestles but have

this area to a Provincial Park

the third tunnel has a series of open
air windows which helps provide light
and you can see how these were
reinforced within the rock wall that had
been blasted away also note that the
tunnel had been reinforced in 1934 so

Andrew McCullough who was an avid
Shakespeare fan and used names like
Romeo and Juliet and Othello and Lear to
name different places in the area

it's incredible how quickly the air
temperature drops once you get inside
the tunnel even though it's quite a hot

day outside today it is a little chilly
inside the tunnel and a nice way to cool off
the tunnels and trestles are maintained
as part of the provincial park unlike
the nearby Ladner Creek trestle which
sits abandoned we recently give that a
visit and I'll post a link to that as
well so you can check it out so there it
is I would highly recommend that you
check out the Othello tunnels the scenery
is spectacular the tunnels are amazing
and it's one of the coolest attractions

Vancouver area the tunnels are closed in
the winter time due to ice and falling
rock hazards but are open during the
summer from April to October

Othello Tunnels, Coquihalla Canyon Provincial Park in Fraser Valley, BC
The Othello Tunnels trail is an easy 3.5 kilometre hike round trip. Cycling is permitted on this trail, but cyclists must dismount before travelling through the tunnels. The views of the rugged canyon and Coquihalla River along this trail are extraordinary. There are also great opportunities for fishing in the Coquihalla River.

The Kettle Valley railway ran along this line back in the 1900's - designing it was the job of engineer Andrew McCullough and the rail line connected the Kootenay Region with the BC coast. I definitely want to come back later this fall as the leaves are turning, but the weather might be more 'wet.'

A trip to Hope, Bc. A beautiful little town that has so many gems to explore. I recommend checking out this town if you are in the Fraser Valley. We took a walk though the Othello Tunnels and was a part of the railway here in BC but was turned into a trail. Some scenes from movies were filmed here including Rambo - First Blood.

NOT a good day for my drone. First I lifted off directly into a fence (non-gps mode) then at the end I fly through major dripping water and the drone goes all flashing red lights and my display is beeping warnings and warning notices are popping on the screen. The drone lands immediately.
Because I did not do am IMU calibration after the crash the camera is all jerky. Sorry. Hope my drone makes it.
I did not do all the tunnels because I was under a strict time constraint so I plan to return for the full trail; this was just a practice run.

Taking a nice day trip with my mahal and my lil man to Othello Tunnels!
Took us 1 1/2 hr drive from Vancouver,BC to the Othello Tunnels. It's a part of the Coquihalla Canyon Provincial Park. Walking in to the tunnels is fairly easy along a gravel walk way and the total distance from the parking lot to the tunnels and back is a little more than 1 km.
Enjoy the beautiful B.C scenary, took and capture this moment for you guys, but its not the same like being there!
