Ships, Currents, Upwind and a Scooter? Exploring Rote Island (Sailing Nandji) Ep 107
Another Upwind passage competing with Currents and Ships, then a Scooter?
This week on Sailing Nandji, After successfully clearing back into Indonesia, we head to sea on a upwind passage South to the island of Rote in search of some surf for Yosh. There is a strong opposing current which makes sailing upwind difficult in the light conditions, throw a few ships in the mix and everything becomes exciting!
We visit the busy local market and load up on supplies. Walking through town resembles a free range farm as the goats, chickens, pigs and cows roam where they feel. Exploring the island by Indonesias favourite transport, the Scooter! We discover some beautiful white sandy beaches and return the following day so Yosh can have his first surf in 6 months!
Not wasting time though, it is back to sea we go heading West to Malaysia where we plan to install our new engine!
We are a young couple with a dog, who with no sailing experience, bought a yacht, got it blue water cruising ready and set off sailing around the Pacific! We have been in Indonesia for a couple of months cruising and are now high tailing to Malaysia for boat work. We departed Australia 18 months ago and have since explored some amazing countries, met some amazing people and experienced cultures, dived pristine reefs, surfed solo in the middle of nowhere, spent weeks at sea, dealt with storms, big waves, strong winds and had the time of our life doing it! The adventure is just beginning as we sail West with the trades!

Spanish Bay - Belize - Beautiful Barrier Reef
Right in front of Ambergris Caye and not to far from Caye Caulker, protected from the deep blue by Turneffe Islands, lie the calm waters of Spanish Bay.
Both, wall and shallow part, are teaming with live. Loads of varied species of: Gorgonians, Anemones, Sponges and Spaghetti Worms to name a few. Also you might encounter the occasional Eagle Ray, Nurse Shark or large friendly Groupers. Moray Eels, Turtles, Tarpon, Spotted Drums, Pederson Shrimps, Cleaner Shrimps, Arrowhead Crabs, Southern Sting Rays, Squid, French Angelfish are common sightings. That of course if you have a good eye and an experienced Diveleader.
Had a great time with Black Durgon Dives on caye Caulker. Check them out:
Snorkeling in Cozumel March 2014
Snorkeling up the island from the cruise ship docks. Although not the best snorkeling I've ever seen, it was pretty good this day for fish and coral viewing.

Snorkeling John Pennekamp Coral Reef State Park
On our road trip down to the Florida Keys we booked a four hour snorkeling tour at John Pennekamp. The water was a little murky but nothing too terrible. On our three stops we got to see some pretty amazing coral and the Christ of the Abyss bronze statue.

✖️ AUSTRALIA TRAVEL VLOG | GREAT BARRIER REEF✖️
OMGosh you guys this was the most stunning experience i've ever had. We took an hour & 40 minute boat ride out to sea to the Agincourt Ribbon Reefs in the Great Barrier Reef. We stopped to snorkel at three sites - The Chapel, Just Magic and Castle Rock. The videos just don't do this justice. They didn't capture all of the beautiful colors the way my eyes saw them. I have a huge fear of the open ocean and being lost at sea but i'm so happy I was able to over come it for a day so I could experience this. Really, really amazing experience. Can you find NEMO :) ?
