Corcovado National Park --- Hike from Carate to Sirena Range Lodge
Corcovado National Park (Spanish: Parque Nacional Corcovado) is a National Park on the Osa Peninsula in Osa Canton, southwestern Costa Rica (9° North, 83° West), which is part of the Osa Conservation Area. It was established on 24 October 1975, and encompasses an area of 424 square kilometres (164 sq mi). It is the largest park in Costa Rica and protects about a third of the Osa Peninsula. It is widely considered the crown jewel in the extensive system of national parks and biological reserves spread across the country. The ecological variety is quite stunning. National Geographic has called it the most biologically intense place on Earth in terms of biodiversity. Not only is the park very popular with tropical ecologists, a visitor can expect to see an abundance of wildlife.
The park conserves the largest primary forest on the American Pacific coastline and one of the few remaining sizable areas of lowland tropical forests in the world. Historically, logging has taken place in lowland areas because those areas are more easily accessible and contain the largest and most economically valuable trees. But those habitats, which feature diverse vegetation, are also usually the richest in biodiversity. So even though approximately half the tropical forests on Earth remain, what is left of the originally rich lowland forests is usually in too small an area to support the original natural biodiversity. Larger animals, especially, need a large habitat free of human activity. Unfortunately this means that even tourism, the economic incentive for Costa Rica and other developing nations to preserve and protect parks such as Corcovado, actually threatens the long-term biodiversity of the park.

Corcovado National Park

Hiking and wildlife in Corcovado National Park, Osa Peninsula, Costa Rica
Located in Osa Peninsula in South Pacific Costa Rica, Corcovado National Park is known as one of the most biodiverse places on earth. A place where jaguars still run wild, where scarlet macaws soar above the treelines, where sloths and coatis share the trees, and where the roar of the howler monkeys permeates through the rainforest. This is Corcovado National Park, the star attraction of the Osa Peninsula and the best place to hike and spot wildlife in Costa Rica.

Puma and Cub in Corcovado National Park, Costa Rica
January/February of 20010. Spent our first few days down here.
We did a trek through the forest from Puerto Jiminez to La Sirena camping station in the middle of the Corcovado National Park.
Definitely the best thing I have ever done. I'm not an expert in biology, if I was I am sure I would have been even more amazed. Our guide (Koki), showed us things and told us things which I still think about every day. You get an amazing appreciation for life once you have been here.
I am sure there are other places in the world (Amazon for example) with just as much of an astonishing array of flora and fauna however, this tiny part of the world used to be on its own for millions of years until it collided with Costa Rica. (yes, so did South Americas Amazon with Panama, however this part of the world is tiny in comparison, yet has 5% of the worlds diversity). It has a unique set of wildlife and symbiotic relationships throughout the forest, you realise the intracacy of life and how delicate it is
Here is a list of the things we saw within a few days (these are the things a non expert myself can list, so disregards all of the insects, parasties, plants and trees of which there are thousands of species)
Crocodile catching a bird in a river mouth we had crossed the day before (see other video).
Snakes.
Butterflies
Humming birds
Lizards (Jesus Christ lizard, Iguana etc)
Ant eaters
Koates
Puma
Caymen
Howler, Spider, Squirel and Capuchin monkeys.
Golden orb spiders
Tuna
Green turtle (making its way to the Pacific for the first time, beautiful)
Makaws
many birds
many endemic plants and trees.
Thats just a quick list off the top of my head.
Also heard a monkey beaing eaten by a big cat (presumably) at night, Our guide said he heard their call for big cats, then we heard one getting eating (clearly with the horrible sounds). Sounds cruel but was good to hear nature at work.
