STORYLINE:
Cuban President Fidel Castro toured portions of Cuban countryside devastated by Hurricane Michelle on Monday, including a visit to the home of Elian Gonzalez in the heavily affected Matanzas province.
The hurricane brought winds of up to120 kilometres per hour (75 miles per hour) and waves up to 8 metres (25 feet) high, which hammered the southern and northern coasts.
Civil defence officials say two men and three women, including a 98-year-old, died in the worst-hit areas, from Havana in the west to Jaguey Grande, just north of the Bay of Pigs.
On his way back to the capital, Castro stopped in the badly-hit town of Cardenas to see Elian Gonzalez - the shipwreck survivor at the heart of a fierce custody battle last year between Cuba's government and anti-Castro Cubans in Miami.
As the hurricane passed, Cuba mobilised tens of thousands of workers to drain sugar plantations and gather felled citrus fruit and coffee.

Jan 8 10th, 2019 Severe Floodings Argentina & Brazil.
Severe storms and record rainfall hits Argentina, Brazil, Uruguay, Paraguay and Bolivia over the past couple of days, causing widespread flooding and leaving at least 4 people dead.
The storm caused major flooding in northern Argentina, disrupting traffic, submerging cars and forcing thousands to evacuate homes on January 8 and 9, 2019.
Winds gusted to 90 km/h (60 mph), downing trees and power poles.

STORYLINE:
A march by thousands of Venezuelans to mark the country's bicentennial quickly turned into a show of support on Sunday for ailing President Hugo Chavez, who remained in Cuba recovering from the removal of a cancerous tumour.
The president's red-clad supporters waved flags, beat drums and chanted Long live Chavez!
They also displayed signs reading Get well soon, commander and Venezuela is with you.
A message on Chavez's Twitter account said he was doing his daily exercises and receiving that bath of love from the demonstrators in Caracas.
It's the best medicine! he said in the message.
Chavez's Twitter account posted four messages within three hours on Sunday, including one referring to the Bolivarian youth marching on the streets: I see you, I hear you.
The youth want to live in a country with dignity, a sovereign country in a country where there are good opportunities to live in, Vice President Elias Jaua told the crowd in Caracas on Sunday.
The mood was energetic and festive as thousands waved their hands in the air, yet also tempered by concerns for the future.
Chavez arrived in Cuba on June 8 for what ostensibly was a previously scheduled visit.
He has said he underwent an initial surgery on June 11 to have a pelvic abscess removed.
After 18 days out of sight, Chavez announced on Thursday that he had the second surgery to remove the tumour.
He didn't give details about what kind of cancer he had nor say how soon he might return home.
Chavez opponents have accused the government of not providing enough information about the president's condition.
Chavez' illness has also raised questions about whether he will be fit to run for re-election in 2012.
Some analysts have predicted that infighting might break out among the second-tier leaders of Chavez's socialist-inspired Bolivarian Revolution movement if he remains in Cuba for an extended period.
The march was organised as part of the country's weeklong celebrations marking the 200th anniversary of its declaration of independence from Spain. A military parade is planned on Tuesday's anniversary.

STORYLINE:
A rare guest appearance at the Mercosur trade meeting by Cuban leader Fidel Castro transformed a routine economic gathering into a high-profile summit of Washington's greatest Latin American foes.
Castro's surprise trip to Argentina was announced after he was airborne on Thursday.
He left Havana at midday for his first visit to Argentina since President Nestor Kirchner's inauguration in May 2003.
Well-wishers shouted Fidel! Fidel! from behind police cordons from a distance across the Cordoba airport tarmac.
But Castro made no public comments and saluted the crowd with a raised hand before being driven in a motorcade to a pre-summit dinner of the presidents.
As part of Mercosur's 30th summit since 1991, Latin American leaders are expected to sign a new deal promoting trade between Mercosur nations and Cuba, a country still under a decades-old economic embargo by the United States.
Unlike Brazil's Lula Da Silva, who boarded a black limousine without making comments, Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez waded into a crowd of local journalists and security forces to speak of a new Mercosur.
Chavez declared the once-sleepy customs union that emerged a decade ago during a wave of pro-US free trade diplomacy was undergoing a relaunch.
As Lula (Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva), Nestor Kirchner (Argentina President), Tabare (Uruguay President Tabare Vasquez), Nicanor Duarte (Paraguay President) and now with this historic opportunity for us to join Mercosur, we have a new Mercosur market, he said after arriving in Cordoba.
Earlier in the day, during a stopover in Buenos Aires en route to Cordoba, Chavez pledged to put Venezuela's strength as a Latin American oil power behind Mercosur.
Mercosur, in addition to incoming member Venezuela, is historically made up of Argentina, Brazil, Paraguay and Uruguay.
Paraguay sent President Nicanor Duarte to the meeting and Uruguay was being represented by Tabare Vazquez.
Morales and Chile's Michelle Bachelet are attending the summit as observers.
Venezuela's formal induction into Mercosur, a customs union that will now include all the continent's largest economies, was to be a highlight of Friday's talks.
