Coringa Wildlife Sanctuary is in East Godavari district of Andhra Pradesh State, India. It is Fourth largest surviving stretch of mangrove forests in India with thirty five species of plants belonging to twenty four families, and more than 120 bird species.

Apart from the avian fauna, the sanctuary has a fair population of golden jackal, sea turtle and fishing cat, and a healthy breeding population of smooth-coated otter. The sanctuary has an 18-km long sand pit where olive ridley sea turtles nest from January to March every year.

Coringa Wildlife Sanctuary | Kakinada | Enchanting destination

Coringa Wildlife sanctuary is located near the port town of Kakinada in the state of Andhra Pradesh in India. It is one of the better maintained tourist destinations of India. It is a mangrove and dry deciduous forest located in the estuary of Godavari.
Surely, a place not to be missed!
The boardwalk inside the sanctuary gives such an exclusive look to the place. This is required because the ground is not suitable for walking as it is mangrove, marshland and there would be low and high tides.
It takes lot of effort and resources to construct and maintain such boardwalks with wooden planks and granite pillars. I do not remember seeing this at any other similar tourist destination in India. This reminded me of Wai O Tapu Thermal wonderland in Rotorua, New Zealand which I had the good fortune of visiting a few years ago.
For the New Year 2018, we decided to visit Rajahmundry, Kakinada and Dindi.

Timings: 7:00 am – 6:00 pm
Best Time to Visit: Oct – May months.
Location: Kakinada – Yanam Highway. 20 Km from Kakinada.
Birds in the Sanctuary
Little Egret, Cattle Egret, Pied Kingfisher, Small Blue KingFisher, Black Capped KingFisher, Pond Heron, Reef
Heron, Grey Heron, Night Heron, Little Stint, Sand Piper, Red Shrank, Red Wattle-Lapwing, Crow Pheasant,
Flamingos, Sea Gulls, Purple Heron, Brahmini Kite, Open Bill Stork, Little Cormorant
Many other migrating birds from Europe and Australia reach this sanctuary for reproduction. It is
estimated that 78,000 – 88,000 migrating birds build nests for reproduction. As per the recent census, 67
different water birds and 30 other birds are spotted here.
Water living animals Olive Ridley turtles lays eggs, Otter can be seen here. Monkeys, Mongoose, Jackals,
wild cats, reptiles are commonly seen here.
Coringa wildlife sanctuary
This wildlife sanctuary stretches over an area of 235 Sq. Km. This area is declared as the wildlife sanctuary
in the year 1978. The Wooden bridge which is 572 ft long is available for tourists walk thru the forest. 2 Km
long wooden bridge also added for tourists sightseeing. Boating is available for tourists. Mangrove forest is
natural formation at the bays of Rivers Krishna and the Godavari. Coringa mangrove is the second largest
mangrove forests in India. 35 mangrove species can be seen here. EGREE (East Godavari River Estuarine
Ecosystem) an important bird area and a potential for Ramsar Site.

The nearest airport is at Rajahmundry which is 70 km away
By Train
The nearest railway station is at Kakinada which is 20 km away. Rajahmundry is 60 km away.

This place can be reached by bus from Kakinada station.
