HAVANA, CUBA WALKING TOUR - Plaza Vieja to Cruise Terminal
How do we afford to travel so often? We're lucky enough to stay for almost free in every city, using
Walk the most beautiful part of Old Havana, moments from the Havana Cruise Port at Christmas.
We walk along Calle Mercaderes, seeing multicoloured statues through open doors, passing Plaza de Simon Bolivar on the corner of Calle Obrapía, the greenery of Guayasamín Park, and then follow the sounds of the street performers into the grand Havana Old Square (Plaza Vieja de La Habana.)
This famous square is home to the excellent coffee house Café El Escorial, and the bar La Vitrola, where Madonna famously danced on the bar as she celebrated her 58th birthday.
We walk back along the restaurants and cafes on Calle Mercaderes before turning right on Calle Amargura to reach Plaza de San Francisco. Paved with cobblestones, and facing the harbour, this plaza is home to the Fuente de los Leones fountain.
From here, the Cuba Cruise Port Terminal, Terminal Sierra Maestra is directly ahead, across the pedestrian crossing.

If you are staying in Havana anywhere in the vicinity of this place, get over there for some great hospitality and artfully made drinks. Reasonably priced, we visited three different times during our recent stay in La Habana and made it our little rest stop. From cofffee to the hard stuff, from tapas to pizza - this gem should go on your list when researching places to eat and drink in Havana. Just a few minutes walk from the Malecon - and conveniently located between downtown and the University area.

I'm at the corner of 23 (La Rampa) and L street. This is one of the most important intersections in Havana. I am right beside the La Coppelia ice cream shop, and in front of the Cinema Yara, and just accross the street from the Habana Libre Hotel (former Havana Hilton Hotel). This area is not only a great place to meet people, but it is also a main traffic hub for public transportation and for taxis. Look at the video and learn all about it. The Sloppy Joe's bar was the center of gravity of the stars of the 40s.

Havana’s fading Chinatown: one Cuban-Chinese man’s hope for a revitalized culture
Cuba’s Barrio Chino De Havana is one of the oldest and largest Chinatowns in Latin America. Yet this once vibrant neighbourhood has been in decline for decades. Many Cubans of Chinese descent fled the island nation soon after Fidel Castro’s 1959 revolution.

STORYLINE:
Ernest Hemingway is back propping up at the bar in his beloved El Floridita restaurant - this time permanently as a life-size bronze statute.
The statute of the late American writer, who made pre-Revolutionary Cuba his home for many years, is situated in the same corner of the bar he frequented during more than two decades on the island.
Hemingway lived just east of Havana, at the farm known as Finca Vigia from 1940 to 1961, and came into town to enjoy his favorite Cuban drinks- frozen daquiris and sour-sweet mojitos laced with mint leaves.
There are very few times a sculpture can be placed in the exact place he frequented, said sculptor Jose Villa Soberon, who took eight months to complete the work that will be officially unveiled on Monday.
Soberon is already known here as the man who sculpted a life-sized bronze statute of the late singer John Lennon, which sits on a bench in a Havana park.
The Hemingway statute leans comfortably against the far end of the bar, right hand on hip, left foot on the on the bar's foot rest.
Abel Prieto, Cuba's Minister of Culture says Hemingway's relationship with Cuba highlights the country's ability to absorb the universal.
The establishment's bartenders promise to place a daiquiri before the statue every day in Hemingway's honour.
The author of such works as The Old Man and the Sea, A Farewell to Arms, and The Sun Also Rises, committed suicide in Ketchum, Idaho, in 1961.

Havana Cuba -- Restaurants with Live Music
Every corner of Havana is rich with music. It's also very common to have live music in the restaurants around Cuba. These musicians are very talented and are usually unpaid, except for the tips they receive from patrons who appreciate their music. They also usually sell their CDs. So, either a tip or CD purchase is always appreciated.
This video was recorded by a traveler on one of our cycling tours, while enjoying a free evening in Havana before the tour began.
