Coromandel, New Zealand Travel Guide
Coromandel - one of the finest areas to visit in New Zealand. Sit back and relax as we take you to some places you'll definitely want to visit!
Stop 1 - Our opening scene, also used in the Narnia movie.
Te Whanganui-A-Hei otherwise known as Cathedral Cove
If you're planning a visit to New Zealand - Coromandel, Cathedral Cove is a must visit destination with its iconic cave and stunning beach. Get ready for a bit of a scenic bush walk down to the famous cove and make sure you watch the video for some handy parking tips.
Stop 2 - When you're in Coromandel Town and hunger kicks in, you just have to get some Coromandel green lipped muscles. We stop off at Pepper Tree Restaurant and Bar in Coromandel Town to get some of these tasty molluscs and some delicious calamari too.
Address - 31 Kapanga Rd, Coromandel 3506
Hours: Monday - Sunday 10am–9pm
Stop 3 - With our bellies full it's time for another famous spot, Hahei Hot Water Beach. This hot water beach is on Mercury Bay on the east coast of the Coromandel Peninsula, New Zealand, approximately 12 kilometres south east of Whitianga. An amazing phenomenon occurs at this beach where if you dig up holes in the right spot you actually get access to hot spa-like waters. Go prepared with your spade and make yourself your very own hot spa pool on the beach.
Stop 4 - We retire for the evening at Dawn's AirBnb
If you're looking for a great place to stay in Coromandel Town, Dawn's AirBnb is a lovely little home away from home and such a cute cabin accommodation located on a farm and in a very convenient area of Coromandel Town. Dawn is a fantastic host so definitely check out her Coromondel accommodation if you're looking for a great place to stay. Fits 3 people very comfortably and if you're lucky you'll get a visit from her cute cat and dogs!
Stop 5 - On our final day we head over to Whitianga which is a short approximately 45 minute drive away from Coromandel Town to go to another one of our must visit spots. The Lost Spring. Enjoy this hidden paradise with geothermal spas and hot pools in a beautiful secluded nature setting. The Lost Spring in Whitianga is particularly enjoyable in cooler weather. You can even order some food and drinks to enjoy by the hot pools.
Address: 121A Cook Dr, Whitianga 3510
Hours: Monday - Sunday 9:30am–7pm
Stop 6 - Finally if you're craving Asian food there aren't that many choices in Coromandel Peninsula but over in Whitianga we take you to our favourite Asian (Thai) restaurants, The House of Chang Thai.
Address: 33 Albert St, Whitianga 3510
Hours: Monday - Sunday 11:30am–2:30pm, 5–9pm

The Coolest Town In NEW ZEALAND | Whitianga | Coromandel Peninsula
Whitianga or Whiti City as the locals call it is the gateway to our favourite beach in New Zealand.
Cathedral Cove is a must visit while you are on the coromandel peninsula. Just down the road from Cathedral Cove you will also find another attraction the Coromandel is famous for and that is Hot Water Beach or Hottie as the locals would say.
Whitianga is also home to The Lost Spring which is our favourite Natural Spring in NZ, anyway check out the video and comment below if you have any questions and more importantly go and check out Whitianaga and the beautiful Coromandel Peninsula.

Epic Cave and Coastline Boat Tour, Whitianga, New Zealand
Filmed during a boat tour on the North Island beginning in Whitianga and exploring the coastline and several caves. Cathedral Cove was one of our destinations, but honestly, the whole trip was incredible, even with the rain. Les was a great operator and handled the boat like the experienced boatsman he is.

NORTH ISLAND NEW ZEALAND ROAD TRIP - Coromandel Penninsula
NORTH ISLAND NEW ZEALAND ROAD TRIP - Coromandel Penninsula
It’s the last week of our 6 week New Zealand campervan road trip! Before heading to Auckland we take some time to explore the Coromandel Peninsula including Cathedral Cove (Te Whanganui-A-Hei) Marine Reserve and Hot Water Beach(in Mercury Bay).
There’s also time to squeeze in one last quick hike up along Mount Paku Summit as well. While a beautiful lookout in it’s own right we can’t help but feel like after the Tongariro Alpine Crossing everything else just feels kind of...well...not the Tongariro Alpine Crossing. That might be something to keep in mind when you’re planning your own NZ trip.
To really cap off the NZ experience we spent our last night camping in a sheep paddock while we cleaned out our campervan. Not sure it gets more NZ than that.
New Zealand: You are a complicated, beautiful mistress. You reward visitors with unparalleled natural beauty but you punish with rain and sand flies. The price is worth it. (And, since we paid our speeding ticket from our friends in Hokitika, we’ll be allowed back to visit someday in the future.)

Kauri Tour with Coromandel Adventures – New Zealand’s Biggest Gap Year – Backpacker Guide NZ
Day 5: Coromandel Adventures take us on a tour of the Waiau Kauri Forest until disaster strikes! The Coromandel Adventures Kauri Tour from the biggest travel guide to New Zealand.
Yesterday - Day 4 -
Tomorrow – Day 6 –
About this video:
It’s Day 5 of New Zealand’s Biggest Gap Year where we are challenging ourselves to do 365 Activities in 365 Days in New Zealand. Today’s activity is a Kauri Tour with Coromandel Adventures where we delve into the wild and wonderful Waiau Kauri Forest to check out some of the largest trees in New Zealand. We get heaps of insights into the eco-system of New Zealand thanks to Sarni from Coromandel Adventures who is our tour guide for the afternoon. However, not everything goes to plan...
We experience firsthand what it’s like to get caught in New Zealand’s infamous ever-changing weather – a lesson we need to learn when backpacking in New Zealand. Nevertheless, Sarni from Coromandel Adventures improvises the tour by telling us more about the fascinating kauri forests in the warmth of the Thames cafe.

Cathedral Cove
Cathedral Cove Walk
Located at Hahei on the Coromandel peninsula, Cathedral Cove is one of the “must visit” sites on the Coromandel. It's a very popular tourist destination so visit at sunrise or early evening if you want to avoid the crowds.
But first it is important to know that the car park at the start of the track is closed, it's now only a drop-off zone, but you have a few other options to consider:
1) free parking is available at the entrance to the village instead, from there walk via the beach to the start of the walk, or
2) Use the park and ride shuttle bus available from the free parking area (It costs $5 return per person, $3 for a child and $10 for a family (2 adults 2 children)
For more up to date rates please visit: or
3) Use the water taxi service that runs from Hahei beach which is $15 per person per trip
4) Or pay a local who offers parking on their property, this might vary but we paid $10, we found this quite convenient and close to the start of the track.
Disclaimer:
All prices mentioned was valid at the time this video was uploaded, please visit the provided links for more up-to-date rates and information.
Cathedral Cove is accessible only by foot, boat or kayak, and is considered one of best short walks you can do, it offers stunning views of the Coromandel coast and takes you past dramatic cliff formations to where it ends at the iconic rock archway of Cathedral Cove.
Along the way you have 2 other side tracks which is well worth the visit, The first one is Gemstone bay which offers excellent snorkeling.
Next up is Stingray bay, this must be one of the most beautiful beaches on the Coromandel! white sand, dramatic white cliffs and turquoise water.
From here is the last stretch to Cathedral Cove, the whole track is well graded but has some really long and steep hill sections.
