SCUBA DIVING Coron Palawan Philippines | WRECK diving w/ Exploring with Cody
Coron Palawan Philippines is becoming legendary. World class island hopping and beautiful blue water is reason enough to visit. It's already paradise for adventure travel, but the Scuba diving in Coron is a hidden secret. Not many know that it is home to some of the best wreck diving in the world.
Just north of Palawan Island, and about 30 meters below the surface in Coron Bay is a fleet of Japanese warships, sunk by American bombers in 1944 as they were fleeing the Philippines. These ships are massive. Some are over 150 meters long, and almost completely intact.
In this Philippines travel vlog, I team up with Exploring with Cody, and we tag team this incredible location. This was one of my favourite adventures in the Philippines. Let's go back!

Diving the WW2 Shipwrecks of Busuanga Bay, Coron (Philippines)
Full blog on
In the last few years, Coron has been become famous over instagram— clear waters entice visitors form all over the world to investigate the abundant and unpralleled marine environment. Coron ranks as my most memorable dive location; the World War 2 wrecks were a bucket list item for me. As a graduate with a degree in history, Coron was not on my radar because of instagram, I knew about it due to my studies on the war in the Pacific.
.
.
While the Philippines has become a tourist hotspot, the history of Japanese occupation during WW2 lies relatively invisible to the average visitor, unless you go underwater.
.
.
Following the Battle of Manila in 1945, the Japanese navy fled to the protected area of Busuanga Bay, Coron. The American forces bombarded the limping Japanese navy and for several weeks the waters of Coron were filled with oil, sunken vessels, and blood.
.
.
While the seven ships in Busuanga Bay are a popular dives, it is important that we educate ourselves on the manner in which the wrecks came into existence. While the war in Europe has consumed much of global studies on World War 2, it is imperative to recognize the suffering and events which simultaniously occurred in South East Asia, specifically the Philippines. While I enjoyed the aesthetics of the dive, what makes Coron so notable is the ability to visit the physical wrecks and pay my respects to an important moment in history as well as the people, on all sides, who perished.
My WORST Scuba Diving Day in Coron, Palawan - Philippines Vlog (Episode 7)
We started our day scuba diving in Irako and went down to 39 meters. On the second dive, though, I failed to go down, everyone left me alone and I had to go back to the surface. Bruno still managed to dive and visit Akitsushima and Okikawa.

Japanese shipwreck Akitsushima, Coron, Philippines
Video from wreck dive to Akitsushima. The ship was sunk by Hellcats airstrike in September 1944. Of all the sunk ships near Busuanga in Coron Bay, this is the only warship. Akitsushima lies at a depth of 35 meters on the left shipboard. One can see quite serious damages from an airstrike. You can penetrate inside the ship. Usually divers enter inside the ship in the stern part, pass through the engine compartment through several levels and exit through the fault of the shipboard in the middle.
Diving WW2 Wrecks in Coron, Philippines + We Crash!!!!
We freedive on the mind blowing WW2 wrecks in Coron. These are by far the largest and best preserved wrecks I have ever seen! We dive the East Tangat wreck, the Ikikawa Maru and the Morazan Maru. All 3 wrecks sank during air raids during WW2.

Busuanga Island and Coron Town - Palawan Philippines | JOEJOURNEYS
Coron also refers to Coron town on neighbouring Busuanga Island where the airport and most accommodation is located, as well as daytime boat trips that are the only way to visit the tribe-protected Coron island itself.
Coron is best known for world-class WWII-era wreck diving, though the area also offers limestone karst landscapes, crystal-clear freshwater lakes and shallow-water coral reefs, and even hot springs.
A few things to do in Coron Town and around:
-Mt. Tapyas is the second tallest mountain and one of the most dominant land features around the town of Coron in Busuanga Island, Palawan. Towering over the town at 210 meters clearly marked by the white cross and the Coron Hollywood style signage, its trail is easily accessible on foot.
-Maquinit Hot Spring is perfect of an end of day activities where you just want to soak in the thermal spring.
-Coron Public Market located on the harbour facing the island of Coron, a market of local items from fish, poultry, meat, fruit and vegetable.
Almost all beaches and attractions are located on nearby small islands, which are only accessible via boat tour, daily boat charter or by staying in one of the higher-end resorts that are the only accommodation option on most populated islands.
Many visitors travel to/from El Nido region by boat and options of more island hopping with overnight stays on islands along the way.

I'm excited to exchange the cold Netherlands for the sunny Philippines.
And for those of you wondering where he is...... Sander woehoe!
But because Sander is busy, it will be only me. And you of course!
Welcome to... Coron.
Coron is the largest town on Busuanga. One of the northern most islands of Palawan. Wandering through the streets, you'll find a lot of these. Diveshops! On the 24th of september 1944 a dozen of Japanese ships were sunk by the Americans. As of today they became a tourist attraction, making Coron one of the best dive spots in the world.
But there is more to this islands than shipwrecks only. If you love some limestone goodness and sweet lakes, you won't be disappointed here. So...
Oh my god, I am simply in love with these surroundings. First place up is Twin Lagoon.
With that magic moment of the first jump in the water. Yes.....!
There are some beautiful white beaches in these surroundings. But let's check the under water life first!
the twin lagoons are two lagoons separated by high limestone cliffs. The hole is only accessible by lowtide – but there are alse these wooden stairs to enjoy the double view at all times.
Getting away from the boat a bit may give you some exersise going back. Yes, we made it!
At lease we really deserve some lunch now, right?
The food on tours like this is always very good. It's fresh, healthy and there is something for all to love. Plus, you get a good view on the side!
Our final spot for today is an all time favorite of mine. A little climb will reveal one of the cleanest lakes in Asia. But it's also very rewarding to look back.
The cristal clear waters offer an amazing visibility to this lake. Sometimes even up to 10 meters deep. It's a great refreshment after a day of salt water.
and thats the end of our stay in Coron. Next week we're up for an exciting island expedition from Coron to El Nido – so definitely stay around for that one! Thanx for watching. Doeg!

The Wrecks of Coron, Philippines
My last dive trip in the Philippines was capped off with 2 fantastic wreck dives off the coast of Coron. The Japanese ship wrecks were a joy to dive into, albeit i was bit claustrophobic at first cause the dive master was taking me into tiny passageways, but it was an incredible experience, and the awesome people from Sangat Island Dive Resort.

Coron Islands Philippines - Coron, Philippines is right up there with El Nido as the most popular destination in Palawan - This absolute paradise of a province on the western side of the Philippines.
Today, we set out to experience some of the most iconic attractions just offshore.
As far as boat tours go in Coron, there’s a ton of different operators and you can negotiate price right there at the market where the boats leave from each morning.
You can jump on a group tour starting at about $20 USD; which usually includes food and snorkel gear - but we decided to rent a private boat to take our time and go where we wanted.
Our first destination for the day was to visit what’s said to be the cleanest and clearest lake in all of Asia - Kayangan Lake.
We then made our way to Barracuda Lake, I’m told, It’s actually a brackish lake which means it’s a mix of salt and freshwater.
And despite the name, we didn’t spot any barracudas.
The third stop on the island tour was another famous spot called the Twin Lagoons.
One of the best aspects of choosing the private tour is that you can spend as much or as little time as you want in each attraction. It also gave me the time to fly the drone over Twin Lagoon and Barracuda Lake.
The last location was called Skeleton Wreck which is a 25m long Japanese supply ship that was hit by an airstrike during WWII by US airforce. The ship now rests at a depth of 5m ranging to 22m at the deepest. It is an awesome spot for snorkeling.
It was a great spot to finish a perfect day here in the Coron Islands Philippines.

Akitsushima Japanese WWII Wreck Dive in Coron Bay Palawan Philippines
This Akitsushima WWII Wreck Dive was completed with Chindonan Dive Resort on 6th October 2019.
Akitsushima was a flying boat tender, sunk by US Task Force on 24th September 1944 in Coron Bay, Palawan, Philippines. Lying on her port side, in 36 metres of water, she has a lot of swim throughs that are perfect for wreck divers.
Song: Blondage - Stoned (OTR Remix).
