ABOUT:
A Journey of Conquest and Exploration It was a journey of conquest, filled with exploration, wonder - and cruelty. Inspired by tales of vast cities of gold, 339 European soldiers and over 1000 Aztec allies embarked on an epic journey through arid deserts and rugged mountains. They brought rich traditions and new technology into the region, irrevocably changing the lives of native peoples and continuing to influence the area today.
We also visited the birding mecca of Ramsey Canyon Preserve. Rare birds, such as the tufted flycatcher and the flame-colored tanager. A lush sycamore streamside-forest set in the beautiful Huachuca Mountains, which harbor many species of plants and animals at the northern edge of their ranges, such as Apache pine, Berylline hummingbird and coati. And a spring-fed stream and high canyon walls that keep Ramsey Canyon cool and moist. That’s just a small part of the adventure and beauty you’ll find here!

In this video we were not prepared for what we found. Instead of a dry arid desert, we encountered a lush mountainside forest. Not expecting water, we only had metal detectors. In terms of success in prospecting, this trip was a bust but I figured some people out there may want to see video of the region...so I decided to throw a quick video together.
We did have other purposes in the area (Tucson Gem and Mineral Show video to come!) So the trip was not a bust.
We were in Coronado National Forest near Sonoita (South of Tucson) in there Greaterville area of Arizona. We were looking for the Gold Prospectors Association of America's Lucky Strike Claim but had a hard time finding it. So, we just hit the trails hiking and swinging the sticks. Metal detecting and prospecting activities that do not significantly disturb the soil are permitted without a Plan of Operation (POO) with the Forest Service. So, we just went on public ground...which led to a lot of modern trash and bullets.
More than anything this video shows people what to expect if they go to this area to prospect. There was water (a lot) in February of this year so I wish I would have been prepared for that. Next time I will have the tools I need to prospect effectively.
Additionally I had a chance to get out and talk to the local prospectors and got some REALLY good information on where to find good chunky gold (that pays dividends).

Hiking and caving in Coronado National Memorial
Coronado National Memorial commemorates the expedition of Francisco Vázquez de Coronado in 1540, as he sought to find the mystical Seven Cities of Gold. We did the scenic drive up the Montezuma Pass, then hiked to the Coronado peak and a little bit of Joe's Canyon trail. We finished with exploring Coronado cave which is a wild limestone cave.

The Coronado Trail
Highway 191 in Arizona - The route between Springerville and Morenci was designated a National Scenic Byway and given the name of Coronado Trail Scenic Byway, as this approximates the path taken by Francisco Vásquez de Coronado between 1540 and 1542. This is a very dangerous mountain road with many sharp curves and little or no shoulders on steep cliffs. The highway is the primary route to access Canyon de Chelly National Monument. US 191 traverses the Navajo Nation before entering Utah. -Wikipedia
The route was previously Highway 666, resulting in the nickname “The Devil’s Highway”. There were a large number of highway sign thefts at that time.
The video begins near the massive Morenci open pit copper mine, and enters the most twisty section. In Alpine, where the twisties straighten out, I met a local who believes the road is “better than the Dragon”.
