Rest area to Morenci/Clifton on Coronado Trail US-191
Devil's Highway 191 Morenci to Alpine, AZ 5.25.12.wmv
This was shot day 1 of our ten day ride to the Black Hills. The devils Highway has 120 miles of curves and switchbacks, starting in the mining towns of Clifton and Morenci and ending at US 60 in Springerville, AZ. This captures where the wild fires raged in 2011. I follow Barry and Tom for some of it.
Coronado Trail Scenic Byway, US Route 191 Arizona
My dad and I took a road trip on 191, running between Springerville and Clifton. Amazing road with over 500 curves.
The Coronado Trail
Highway 191 in Arizona - The route between Springerville and Morenci was designated a National Scenic Byway and given the name of Coronado Trail Scenic Byway, as this approximates the path taken by Francisco Vásquez de Coronado between 1540 and 1542. This is a very dangerous mountain road with many sharp curves and little or no shoulders on steep cliffs. The highway is the primary route to access Canyon de Chelly National Monument. US 191 traverses the Navajo Nation before entering Utah. -Wikipedia
The route was previously Highway 666, resulting in the nickname “The Devil’s Highway”. There were a large number of highway sign thefts at that time.
The video begins near the massive Morenci open pit copper mine, and enters the most twisty section. In Alpine, where the twisties straighten out, I met a local who believes the road is “better than the Dragon”.

What a fun road this is on the bikes!
On The Peak - Coronado Trail Airazona
A high point on the Coronado Trail National Scenic Byway (Rt. 191) between Clifton and Alpine Arizona about 107 miles. Though it appears to be fast it is accelerated for the post, this is really 10 to15 miles an hour in second gear - South to North route is significant up hill climbs. Not recommended for RV's over 24 ft. nor pulling a trailer unless you have good horse power and heavy duty breaks. Some switch backs can be tight. This is a 25 MPH road and less.
Great Motorcycle Ride.
Just a taste - more to follow.

I have finally perfected the mounting system for the Panasonic SD-10 camera that I'm using on my Goldwing. It's secure and even has cushioning for a pretty jitter free picture. I found a source for 12v to 5v adapters so my front and back cameras are now hard powered instead of battery powered. With a 16GB SDHC card and best quality, I can get 3.5 hours before I have to change the card.

The Zen Of Motorcycling Part II (Hwy 180 & Coronado Trail)
In May 2006 I set off on a 3,500 mile motorcycle trip with my father and father-in-law from Washington state to New Mexico. We were attempting to make it Carlsbad Caverns NP, however, 1600 miles into the trip we had to put my father-in-law in the hospital with 103 degree temp. The docs gave him Tamiflu and within 2 days he was riding again. So we had to replace Carlsbad with the Alpine to Clifton twisties.
Somebody told me that the trip reminded him of the book called Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance. Hence the name for the video (Thanks Ed!).
