Corris Narrow Gauge Railway (Wales, UK)
I had seen the Corris Railway on a number of occasions, but I’d never seen trains running, so when I heard they were running on the day I was travelling from North Wales to England’s South Coast, I just had to call in. After looking round the informative and interesting museum, I wandered out to the station area to watch the little steam engine arrive with its short rake of attractive coaches. The railway's website describes the Corris Railway as the first Narrow Gauge railway in Mid-Wales. Constructed originally in 1859 as a 2’ 3 gauge tram-road, it employed horses to haul slate waggons to and from the quarries. Steam locomotives arrived in 1878 with passengers being carried from 1883 to 1930. The Railway closed in 1948 and dismantled soon afterwards.
The friendly train staff enjoyed showing visitors around the train, including the locomotive cab, answering questions and generally making the visit a pleasant experience. Our train set off through the pretty Welsh countryside to the current limit of passenger operations at Maespoeth, where passengers can listen to one of the staff giving a short history of the line before being escorted around the works and carriage sheds.
For the return trip we join the crew in the cab of number 7 for the trip back to Corris.

We intended to ride the Vale of Rheidol Railway,but do to the Bank Holiday crowds we gave it a miss.
After shopping in Machynlleth we went to the Corris Railway,that was very quiet,no crowds at all.
We have visited this railway before.They are talking of an extension and a new station building, but I don't think I will ever see it.

The Corris Railway
I am rather ashamed to admit that it has taken me a very long time to visit the Corris Railway, especially considering I have family connections to the village. I have now put that right and paid the railway the visit it deserves, and what a railway this is. Very much reminds me of how the other railways in North Wales felt many years ago, it has such a great little buzz and enthusiasm about it. I can highly recommend visiting.

The two waggons were needed at Corris so were attached to the service train. A crew member had to ride in case they ran away so I volunteered. Here is a most interesting view of the ride up the line to Corris.

A visit to the Corris Railway with the British Railway Staff Railway Society in June 1993 included a propelled ride along the line from Maespoeth Engine Shed almost to Corris Station. Simplex 4wDM 'Alan Meaden' was our means of propulsion.

Loco No.7 has been given a quick check over by the mechanics and is ready for regular service. Shunt the carriages out of the shed, take them to Corris then perform the service to Maespoeth where the passengers will alight to enjoy the museum and workshop tour.
