The following video is something myself and my client witnessed while on a charter on the date above. Before I started even recording this video, this boat was there for five minutes(or more) already engaged in this behavior, in our sight. He was a few hundred feet away with no care for us what so ever. It is disturbing to see the tactic(s) used here, not just how he is netting, but his unethical approach towards us, the unsafe operation of the vessel in public as well. The worse part is, the people who support this guy and what he did use the excuse This man was just making a living, so it is okay for him to do what he did to you and others. It is time for a change about how commercial fishing is conducted on the waters. How many of you have had this same experience?
This is behind(North Of) Middle Island/Georges Bar/Mosquito Lagoon inside the Canaveral National Seashore/Merritt Island National Wildlife Refuge, a beautiful federal park for all to enjoy.
The waters here is very shallow, maybe between 8 to18 inches in depth, if that deep, so the damage(intentionally to federal land in my opinion) is clear as well to the grass flats. Besides the fact he comes in where I had numerous fish there for an hour already with my client, to have him destroy the area(is this a violation of Harassing a Fisherman in Florida, he definitely ruined the area I was in and that is a whole other debate. Florida Statute 372.705)? We had to leave there because there was no sense in staying, the fish were spooked now.
I know how to throw a cast net. I also know how to operate a boat safely when around other vessels and life. I Know you throw it and then pull in your catch of legal bait. However this boat throws it and then circles it several times, seemingly trying to trap fish in it or push them into the net(Even half way through the video you see fish caught in it).
A throw-able Gill Net Perhaps? Is this a gill net that they are using here? A semantic rule, to say, I am not breaking FWC/Florida Law in using Gill Nets? This should worry every angler out there, whether you practice catch and release or not.
The power of video speaks volumes, so do pictures. Besides the damage to the grass flat here, is in its self beyond comprehension. This is inside a National Park. Canaveral National Seashore, New Smyrna Beach & Oak Hill Florida.
Perhaps he already has a background in doing this and not just caught yet on tape. Report these to the FWC ifyou suspect a fish, wildlife, boating, or environmental law violation, report it to the FWC's Wildlife Alert Reward Program: 888-404-FWCC (3922).
This video is recorded in open public view so I have a right to post this and film it. What scares me and others is the amount of people that say things like He is just working, earning a living Or those fish would have come back. You know something, I was working too, and I was there first, and the fact that he had twenty thousand acres to go elsewhere is a main issue here for me and others.
Commercial Harvest Must Stop Inside Canaveral National Seashore and the Merritt Island National Wildlife Refuge, all national parks. Any one who fishes this area and cares can clearly see this guy is causing catastrophic damage to an area by prop scar if anything, let alone putting life at risk, his and or mine possibly.
Besides that, I also saw dead redfish in there at the same time with what looked like prop scars on them. I wish at the time I would have photographed them too. You also CANNOT tell me that there are not innocent by catch caught this way as well. I wish I could zoom in good enough to see how much snook, redfish, trout, etc are caught here, if any. Please again thank you for all the great support out there in making our waters a safer and better place for the future.

How to Catch and Eat Sea Urchins
Tired of going to the restaurant to get your uni? This video answers the questions: What are sea urchins? What do you need to catch sea urchins? How do you catch sea urchins? How do you prepare sea urchins? And How do you eat sea urchins?

Sea Urchins are small, spiny animals that live all across the world’s oceans. Where can you catch sea urchins? They can live in shallow or deep, hot or cold water—so you can find them pretty much anywhere. What do sea urchins eat? They feed on a wide range of foods: mussels, sea sponges, starfish are all fair game, but, the most wholesome sea urchin diet consists of algae.
They have spherical bodies covered with spines that, in some species can reach up to a foot in length. The spines are jointed at the root and assist in protection and movement. The urchin’s main mode of transport, though, are its hundreds of adhesive tube feet, radiating from around the bottom of it’s shell up to it’s mouth. The minority of sea urchin species are venomous and only one species, the innocuously named “Flower Urchin,” has been known to be deadly.
What you need to catch sea urchins:
The kit for catching sea urchins is extremely simple
1. Goggles: that one’s pretty self explanitory
2. Knife: really, anything hard and slender will work. You can use a screwdriver or even a spoon. Anything that can pry.
3. Bag. Something breathable or meshy works best. You want to be carrying the sea urchins with you, not water.
And that’s it! You need goggles, a knife and a bag and you’re ready to get amongst it!
How do you catch sea urchins?
Safety first. Depending on the location and types of the sea urchins you’re going after, this activity can be dangerous. Watch out for ocean currents that could take you over or into rocks and keep your knife sheathed or closed if you’re not using it. The spines of sea urchins themselves are not venomous but they can be painful if you don’t handle them gently. Gloves are a good addition to your kit if you have them.
Sea urchins are largely nocturnal so they hide in the crevices between rocks during the day. Once you spot one, swim down to it and push your implement underneath its body, then pry it off whatever it’s holding on to.
Some sea urchins are stuck on the rocks or in their crevices very strongly, and others aren’t! If one is stuck really tightly in a crevice, I find it best to move on, it’s not worth your energy and you don’t want to damage an animal that you are not going to eat. If you’re in a place with many sea urchins, you’ll be able to find an easier, more vulnerable one down the line.
You will pretty much never have need to cut the sea urchin, just get underneath of it, pry it off, and put it in your bag.
Once you’ve harvested enough to fill your bag or your stomach, you’re ready to prepare them to eat!
Preparing and Eating Sea Urchins
What we are after is the yellow/orange sea urchin roe, or eggs.
Sea Urchins, like all other organic matter, begin deteriorating as soon as they die, so you’ll want to prepare the urchins soon after they are out of the water.
Cutting a large, circular hole around the underside of the urchin is the best way to keep the edible part intact, but if you’re not as worried about presentation, I find it quickest and easiest to make two cuts into the shell of the urchin, allowing you to simply break it in half to retrieve the meat.
You can use a spoon to retrieve the edible, reproductive part of the animal, but I find that using your fingers can be more effective, especially because the roe quite delicate.
Across most of the world, sea urchins are eaten raw. In different countries, raw urchins are complimented by different ingredients: lemon, oil, soy sauce and wasabi are all used. In the mediterranian region, sea urchin is also used to flavor sauces.

Kevin Schulz - Home // Away
Words by Kevin Schulz
Home / Away is a collection of footage shot over the last 8 months; some close to home, some from travels abroad. The first bit of this edit centers around California and includes clips from Santa Cruz, LA and San Clemente.
Following some time at home, I spent the good part of 2 months on the East Coast of the States during the summer and lucked into some amazing waves during what is normally considered a very slow season.
I started in North Carolina, drove to New Jersey, then New York and eventually found myself crossing the Canadian Border into Nova Scotia. Myself and a few others stumbled upon some waves that hadn’t previously been surfed in the North Atlantic so that was a treat in itself. I want this edit to get people fired up to go surf and to also encourage people to adventure out and find some new zones!
