Tourism in Costa Rica is one of the fastest growing economic sectors of the country and by 1995 became the largest foreign exchange earner. Since 1999, tourism earns more foreign exchange than bananas, pineapples and coffee exports combined. The tourism boom began in 1987, with the number of visitors up from 329,000 in 1988, through 1.03 million in 1999, over 2 million in 2008, to a historical record of 2.66 million foreign visitors in 2015. In 2012, tourism contributed with 12.5% of the country's GDP and it was responsible for 11.7% of direct and indirect employment. In 2009, tourism attracted 17% of foreign direct investment inflows, and 13% in average between 2000 and 2009. In 2010, the tourism industry was responsible for 21.2% of foreign exchange generated by all exports. By the early 1990s, Costa Rica became known as the poster child of ecotourism, with tourist arrivals reaching an average annual growth rate of 14% between 1986 and 1994.According to the Costa Rican Tourism Board, 47% of international tourists visiting the country in 2009 engaged in activities related to ecotourism, which includes trekking, flora, fauna, and bird watching, and visits to rural communities. However, most visitors look for adventure activities. Costa Rica was included by Ethical Traveler magazine in the 2011 and the 2012 list of The Developing World's 10 Best Ethical Destinations.

Our Riu Guanacaste Costa Rica Experience

Our recent vacation to Riu Guanacaste Hotel in Costa Rica was amazing. It was our first family trip with Eileen and she had a great time.

I recorded this entirely on the Canon SL2 and Sigma 17-50mm lens, using the MOVO VXR10 shotgun mic. Nothing too fancy. Hope you enjoy it as much as we enjoyed Costa Rica.

Bus from San Jose to Monteverde, Costa Rica Travel

Bus from the terminal in San Jose to the mountain town of Monteverde. Costa Rica public bus system is leaps and bounds ahead of the rest of central america (no chickens here!). Tickets, seats, on time and comfortable. Of course, you pay for it but that's Costa Rica. I picked up a ticket the day of but the bus was sold out so consider getting to the station early or buying a ticket the night before. Bus terminals often switch in San Jose so check with your hotel or hostel - they should have the updated info.

I'm sharing my full review of the RIU Guanacaste All-Inclusive Resort where my husband and I stayed when we went to Costa Rica. The RIU Guanacaste has many features that I will review, some free amenities and some that you will need to pay for. I'll review the rooms at the RIU as well as the dining. So many restaurants to visit. We flew into the Liberia Airport and enjoyed many tours. You will see the word hotel, but this is an all-inclusive resort. And we have stayed at two other RIU resorts so we knew what to expect.

Description: Set in Playa Conchal, W Costa Rica Resort Hotel has two outdoor swimming pools, fitness center and free WiFi. This 5-star hotel offers a 24-hour front desk. There are three different restaurants, offering from casual dining to seafood.
A buffet breakfast is served daily at the property.
The rooms and suites at the hotel are fitted with a seating area, a flat-screen TV with cable channels and a private bathroom with free toiletries and a shower. All rooms at W Costa Rica include a private balcony and each room comes with a coffee machine and a draft beer dispenser. All rooms at the accommodations have air conditioning and a wardrobe.

Reviews:
1. The hotel is on a mountain site overlooking the Conchal Bay. It is a little far from the beach but the Pool called Zona Azul is beautiful during the day. The spa looks like a hobbit house and looks cozy. I would recommend to anyone.
2. My wife and I were staying at the Westin next door and wanted to explore a little and we wound up discovering the W which was going through a Friends and Family soft opening. The actual opening is 11-29. Like all W's it has the design elements you expect and then some. The Living Room and Wet Deck looked very inviting.
In the main building there are two restaurants 10 Norte and a Mercado which we did not try. At the Beach Club there is a restaurant called Zona Azul which through the kindness of the GM and F&B manager we were able to try. The menu here is patterned after the Blue Zone lifestyle focusing in on the regions of the world where there are the longest living people. Putting that aside, the food we had was phenomenal in both taste and presentation. Prices are inline with what you would expect to pay a a fine resort. It looks like not only will there be good dining here but the bar area and pool should be fun during the day.
We also walked through the Spa which was referred to as the Hobbit House by us, but was meant to remind you of the metamorphosis of a Chrysalis.
We did not get to experience any of the rooms.
As nice as everything was that we saw and experienced, I left the best for last... THE STAFF! Everyone we had the fortune to interact with were some of the most hospitable, kind and genuinely caring people that I have met; from the GM to our buggy driver Brandon.
My wife and I are planning our stay here as soon as our schedules permit.
