Hey guys, we are at the Turrialba Volcano and this is live, it’s erupting right now. All that cloud you see in the back is ashes so where we are the volcano right there is just having one of the daily eruptions so that is how active this volcano is right now.
If you guys see over there, you’ll see that all the ashes are getting out right now. And you can smell the sulfur so bad, it’s so intense. And everything around the volcano is grey, it’s dead in most areas. Let me just focus the ground, let me open this and I’m going to show you something. You guys, let me see the camera.
If you guys see this everything is full of ashes. I don’t know if you guys are able to see it but if I do this, the whole ground is see like all the ashes just go everywhere.
Behind us right now is Turrialba Volcano and it’s currently spewing ash so unfortunately we cannot walk up the trail but Memo’s going to tell us a little bit about the activity because this volcano is the most active in Costa Rica right now so how has the activity been recently with Turrialba?
Well it has been very strong, a lot of ashes coming out from the volcano and especially the Central Valley has been affected, even the airport has been closed a couple times. That’s true, sometimes the San Jose aIrport gets closed so you guys might have had some delays or cancellations. But on a clear day if people can walk the trails, what are the trails like?
Well it’s a very rustic trail, it’s all dirt, it’s a dirt road so it could be a little challenging hike especially since we’re about 3000 meters above sea level so the air is very thin. And how many kilometers is it? From here where we are located right now is about 6 kilometers, like 2 or 2 and a half hours.

Turrialba Volcano Eruptions Disrupt Farming in Costa Rica
Frequent eruptions of Costa Rica's Turrialba Volcano over the past month have greatly affected the agriculture and husbandry industries of several surrounding areas.
Located in the Turrialba canton in the central province of Cartago, the volcano has experienced more than four eruptive activities this month, according to the Costa Rican Volcanology and Seismic Observatory (Ovsicori).
The biggest eruption reportedly lifted flying particles into a column measuring over 3,000 metres in height from the volcano's crater.
The ash headed towards the Valle Central, an area where Costa Rica's most populated cities are located, according to the Ovsicori researh center.
Police authorities have evacuated residents from communities close to the volcano.
Among them is farmer Guillermo Solano, who alone has 15 hectares of potato fields nearby the danger zone and is breeding 60 cows.
Videos shot on his smart phone amid the volcano eruption showed the devastation caused by the eruption, which left all his crops covered with thick ash.
The volcano ash was thick and heavy, overwhelming all my crops. And rain turned the ash into something like concrete. As for the cows, we had to feed them with plants from greenhouses, as grass on the ground was inedible. Outdoor water was undrinkable, and one of the biggest influences is that the power supply was cut off, Solano said.
Faced with Turrialba's worsening volcanic activity over the past few weeks, the National Emergency Commission declared a yellow alert, the second-highest of a three-level alert system, in the communities closeby the volcano as well as reminding people to protect themselves and their animals.

How come Turrialba is the most dangerous volcano in Costa Rica?
Intermittent eruptions, sometimes violent, in recent months have put Volcano Turrialba in focus.
Situated in Cartago Province, some 36 kilometers northeast of the capital city San Jose, Turrialba is ranked as the second largest volcano in the country.
A volcanologist who has studied Turrialba for years tells Xinhua it is the most dangerous one out of the 200 or so volcanoes in this Caribbean country.

We currently have at least seven active (volcanoes in Costa Rica), and the most dangerous is the Turrialba Volcano. As to Turrialba, it is an explosive volcano. Its ash strip extends to the Central Valley, where we have the largest population.
According to geological statistics, this hot pot started to lose temper at least 10,000 years ago, and the first major eruption was recorded 4,000 years ago.

It still had many small eruptions, and the last ones, apart from the others, were (recorded) in between 1864 and 1866. For two years the ash (continuously) emitted. People could even collect sacks of sand as it was popularly called. So much ash fell down.
Ash could suffocate, burn and kill, not only crops and plants, but human being and animals.

We are talking about ash reaching more than 100 kilometers away. This can still occur nowadays with Turrialba. Major eruptions will even affect the coastal sites, something that one can't believe will happen in Costa Rica.
