Cotswolds, England: Village Charm
More info about travel to the Cotswolds: As with many fairy-tale regions in Europe, the present-day beauty of England's Cotswolds was the result of an economic disaster — in this case, the collapse of the wool industry. The fine Cotswold towns fell into a time warp, creating a rustic charm that is the basis of today's new prosperity from tourism.
At you'll find money-saving travel tips, small-group tours, guidebooks, TV shows, radio programs, podcasts, and more on this destination.

Yarnton Church, Oxfordshire | Exploring the Cotswolds
Off the beaten track, you find the magnificent old church in Yarnton. Whilst not a place we would usually take the time to visit, Yarnton does have an interesting tale about the English Civil War, and the church has a memorial of the ancestors of Lady Diana Spencer - better known as Princess Diana. This film explains the details.

Travel Blog: UK Places - Northleach, Gloucestershire
Another episode in my UK Towns series where I visit NORTHLEACH. I did underestimate the value of this small town, based on the signposts on the approach. After googling I discovered a wealth of history and decided to investigate the Old Prison.

1940 Turkdean
Footage taken by Cecil Vernon Levesley in 1940 (or possibly 1939) of Turkdean in the Cotswolds. There might be a bit of footage of somewhere called Hotley Rough but since I've never been there I couldn't tell you which was which.
Cotswolds Sherborne
Places to visit in and around Stratford: Sherborne
The Sherborne brook once powered four watermills as it passed through the village, it's course along the valley floor. filling lakes and cascading over a weir is the focal point of a landscape of immense charm. Cotswold estate cottages stretch along the valley skirting the stream until the road climbs to reach Windrush church. All is honeyed limestone, all is bubbling silence, all is sculpted neglect.
The manor of Sherborne was gifted to Winchcombe Abbey by Coenwulf of Mercia in the 9th century. Edward I visited Sherborne in 1382. After the Dissolution of the Monasteries the parish bcame part of the Royal estate. A Norman church was recorded as early as 1175 in the records of Winchcombe Abbey. A 19th century cottage at the east end of the village has a Norman doorway said to have been recovered from an orchard nearby which must be a relict of this early church.
The present church, St Mary Magdalene is joined to Sherborne House by an open arcade, it retains a tower and spire c1300. The church has six bells, one 14th century and another by Edward Neale of Burford cast in 1653. A new chancel was built in 1750 for James Lenox Dutton. The nave and aisle were demolished (1850-1859) to allow more light into the house, nave and chancel were built slightly to the north, completed by 1859 the work was commissioned by the second Lord Sherborne and is probably the work of Anthony Salvin. The church is famed for it's magnificent monuments particularly an angel who triumphs over the skeletal figure of Death.
Sherborne House was built by Thomas Dutton some time after 1551, a substantial building must have provided lodgings for Elizabeth I and her entourage when she visited in 1592. This house underwent a series of alterations taking it's present form when it was entirely rebuilt in 1829-1834 by Lewis Wyatt who was influenced by the form of the mid 17th century house.
Astronomer Royal James Bradley was born in Sherborne in 1693.
Sherborne lies four miles east of Norhtleach and follows the Sherborne brook, a tributary of the Windrush, for more than a mile. About an hour from Stratford-upon-Avon, it is within easy distance of Burford and Northleach.

This video is Day 2 of a 3 day trip to The Cotswolds - Watch Day 1:
The Cotswolds is an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty in south, central England. On Day 1 I travelled to The Cotswolds taking 9 hours to get there! On Day 2 I explored 5 beautiful villages and walked through the stunning surrounding landscape. On Day 3 I travelled to Cirencester, which was an important Roman settlement. From there I set out to find the start of The Thames!
When I arrived to The Cotswolds I bought a 3 day bus/train pass which I used from Oxford. This cost me £25, which was great value. However do not expect regular buses and in some cases there are only 1 or 2 buses running to a particular village a day. Over the 3 days this pass saved me about £30.
In this video on Day 2 I set out early in the morning to explore the villages in the north of The Cotswolds. I didnt really have a plan as I wanted to see where the day took me. I explored Northleach, Moreton in Marsh, Bourton on the Water, Upper Slaughter and Lower Slaughter. I was surprised by how much I saw and I had an amazing day exploring.
I stayed at Far Peak Camping farpeakcamping.co.uk
The campsite is about 1 mile South West of Northleach village, so be prepared to walk if you do not have a car as there are few taxis in the area. It is a scenic walk!
I hope you enjoyed this video, please Subscribe if you did and watch Day 2 and Day 3 when I upload them in a 1 week!
