On the Cotswold Way and Cleeve Hill
A 21km (13 mile) circular walk following part of the Cotswold Way near Cheltenham on a warm day in early spring. We visited Cleeve Hill - the highest point in the Cotswolds - and also Belas Knap, a 5,000-year-old neolithic long barrow (tomb). We set off from the village of Whittington and walked a clockwise route, which was full of interest and surprises. It took about 5 hours including picnic stops. Thank you to all subscribers - we are close to the magic 100!

A Cotswold Walk at Mickelton, Gloucestershire
The northern section of the scenic limestone Cotswold Hills ends just south of Stratford-upon-Avon. Here, a fine countryside walk heads uphill from the small village of Mickelton towards the hamlets of Hidcote Bartrim and Hidcote Boyce.
At the crest of the Cotswolds, the walk passes by the famous National Trust gardens of Hidcote Manor. After passing through Hidcote Bartrim, the walk continues onwards across farm fields to Hidcote Boyce. From there, the Heart of England Way leads back to Mickelton, along an escarpment with fine views of the Vale of Evesham far below.
Sights along this walk include: medieval ridge and furrow contours in a field near Mickelton; Cotswold thatched cottages in the Hidcote hamlets; a large grove of holly trees and bushes just beyond Hidcote Boyce.

Cotswold Walks Stow on the Wold
Stow on the Wold, self proclaimed ‘Capital of the Cotswolds’ located 800ft above sea level, which encouraged the formation of an enclosed town square, with access roads deliberately made narrow so that livestock on market days could more easily be controlled. It is said that on a good day up to 20K sheep could be sold, a phenomenal number in any age, let alone in the days when they would have been driven to market, and its main source of wealth.
Because of its elevated position the town relied on well water and even after mains water was provided there were many who still preferred to drink water from the well.
After a brief look at the town we set off into the surrounding country. It is difficult to walk anywhere in the Cotswolds without encountering beautiful scenery and this walk is no exception. First walking down to the river Dickler, then following the valley bottom to reach Lower Swell, another delightful typical Cotswold village, mainly strung out along the road which provided access to Stow.
After a brief wander we head back towards the start passing an old spa on the way. The walk aims to keep you from road walking and this it does quite successfully by using adjacent pathways.
Stow on the Wold, Cotswold walks, wool town sheep market town, elevated town, well water supply, beautiful surroundings, river dickler, lower swell, water spa, old spa, things to do in the Cotswolds, Cotswold town, capital of Cotswolds, country walks, Gloucestershire walks,

CHELTENHAM NOSTALGIC JEWEL OF THE COTSWOLDS
Cheltenham, Gloucestershire, England, is an excellent tourist attractive town with a past history involving Great Britain's Kings and Queens. Basically its fame was based on its Spa waters which were drunk and still are, by people for health reasons. It has many attractive shops, hotels, good restaurants, parks and gardens. The latter were much better in the recent past as depicted in this film! A major event in March each year is The Gold Cup Race featuring thoroughbred horses. Well worth a visit and as a centre for touring the superb Cotswolds.
