Councillors have approved plans to build a McDonald's drive-thru on the outskirts of Oakham, Rutland's main town, despite a planning application for the restaurant triggering 50 objections. Some residents claimed the unsightly development would increase litter, impact other traders and undermine The Rutland Brand. Others opposed to the drive-thru, which would create around 65 jobs, feared it would increase anti-social behaviour and devalue local houses. A mother who attended a planning committee meeting on Tuesday said she opposed the plans purely for who they are and what they stand for. However Edward Baines, the chair of Rutland County Council's planning committee, said the issue was one of land usage and not the grounds of the applicant. After an hour of debating, Rutland's County Council's planning committee approved the planning application on Tuesday evening. The report, which said 23 submissions had been received in support of the application, states: The design and layout of the proposal is appropriate in the area. Natural and neutral colours and materials will be used on the building and the size and design of the building would not have an adverse impact on the surrounding area or the amenities of nearby residential properties. The site represents an appropriate location for a drive-thru restaurant. In May last year, almost 400 people attended a consultation event in Oakham which was staged by McDonald's. Its plans to develop the wasteland site off Lands End Way include a 6.75 metre-high sign, odour control measures and patrols to collect litter in the local area. Martin Cuthbert, the successful applicant who will become the manager of the franchise, said he was confident now is the right time to open a restaurant in the area. He added that the fast food chain was safe and family friendly and that he was expecting it to attract customers from both Oakham and passing traffic - and particularly people visiting Rutland Water. Oakham In Bloom's chairman said the all-volunteer charity felt obliged to object the application on the terms the application had set out. In our opinion the landscaping would create a stark and ugly environment for people that would be incongruous with its surroundings, it said, commenting on the original planning application. It would have a negative effect on the town. Such eye-sores, once built will be there for decades. McDonald's has agreed to use stone on parts of the exterior of the new drive-thru in Oakham to achieve a subtle natural feel to the building. A McDonald's spo

HRH Prince Charles Official Opens Devon Federation of Young Farmers’ Club’s Headquarters
BUTTER making, sheep shearing and even cheerleading were all things His Royal Highness Prince Charles got to see when he opened the Devon Federation of Young Farmers’ Club’s new headquarters, The Amory Building.
The Prince of Wales visited the Cheriton Bishop site on Thursday, July 20 and was greeted by more than 200 members, as well as dignitaries from Mid Devon District Council and pupils from Cheriton Bishop Primary School.
As part of his visit, Prince Charles saw a complete range of rural activities including stock judging of dairy and sheep, junket making and flower arrangingm and got an insight into the recently launched safety campaign.
Devon’s Young Farmers’ Club chairman Claire Bellew said: “It was a huge honour to have Prince Charles come and open our Young Farmers’ Centre here in Cheriton Bishop.
“A lot of work has gone into this building from members and outside businesses, so it is a huge honour to invite him here and showcase our activities and rural skills.
“We purchased this building in 2008 when it was a pub which hadn’t been used for a couple of years. We spent £600,000 renovating it, so all of that money was raised by our members and through trusts and grants and supporting businesses. It has been a busy few years, but we moved in in December 2016 so we feel very lucky to be here.
“Prince Charles was very interested in everything and a couple of our members are tenants on the Duchy Estate so he had a chat with them as well.”
Nick Creasy, operations manager for the Devon Federation of Young Farmers, added: “What a fantastic day it’s been. He’s spent so much time with not just the people who are supposed to meet him, but also the members. He had a fantastic time, we had a fantastic time and it was a great honour to have him open our building today.
“I think we’re very fortunate that His Royal Highness does understand the rural and agricultural community very well. I hope he will see that we have a strong federation and a strong group of young farmers in Devon and the fact that we have a full programme, whether that be the skills, travel or social programme we do a lot in Devon Young Farmers.”
Mr Creasy added that another important factor from the day was the group’s safety campaign.
“Sadly we’ve lost two members to farm accidents this year and we really want to try to make an impact and stop that from happening, not just fatalities but serious injuries. Farming is a dangerous industry so we’re driving hard to try to improve things.”
In the 64 Devon Young Farmers’ Clubs in Devon there are now 1,600 members. The new building will help the federation continue to work with the Farm Community Network and also British Wool, as well as have a site for competitions, and a place to meet for training and meetings.
The Devon Federation of Young Farmers’ Clubs provide members aged between 10 and 26, a unique opportunity to develop skills, work with their local community, travel abroad and compete in a range of competitions.
Dating back to 1920, the federation was first formed in Hemyock in Devon with the first calf club in the country.

Diner says there's a rat in KFC's chicken
Jeanne Moos reports on a fast food flap that has one diner fried. See below for KFC's full response provided to CNN on June 22:
“Recently, a customer questioned the quality of a KFC product, and this received considerable publicity given the sensational nature of his claim. The product has now been tested by a third-party independent lab, which confirmed it is definitely a piece of chicken, as we knew all along. The right thing for this customer to do is to apologize and cease making false claims about the KFC brand.”

There has been plenty of talk lately about protecting Soho's reputation as a centre for music and the arts, as well as a haven for those who love to live an alternative lifestyle. A campaign, started by locals, called Save Soho is asking people and businesses to give London's most colourful area a voice - and we're right behind them. We are after all a Soho-based business and our office has been here for 20 years! In fact, we support it so much we made a video with people on the street, asking them why they love the area. Lots of love

Summary:-
One hot June day, three friends decide there is nothing they would like to do more than to get away from London. A boating holiday with lots of fresh air and exercise would be just the very thing, or so their doctors tell them. So, after debating the merits of hotel or camp beds and what to pack, they set off on their voyage - a trip up the Thames from Henley to Oxford - but very quickly find themselves ill-equipped for the trials of riverbank life.
