Madison County, Iowa
Original version of a video produced about life here in Madison County, Iowa, home to the Covered Bridges of Madison County. This includes scenes from the annual Madison County Covered Bridge Festival, always held on the second full weekend of October. The 2011 Festival will be held on October 8-9, 2011.
Imagine living in a small town of the past, with a courthouse square filled with unique shops, a friendly and safe place where you get to know your neighbors, and folks gather up their lawn chairs for the summer concerts on the courthouse lawn by the community band. Where you can never walk downtown without stopping to talk with the people you meet. Such places do still exist! And access to more great cultural opportunities like the symphony, opera, class AAA minor league baseball, concerts and much more are just a short drive up the road in Des Moines.
Unlike the stereotypical view of Iowa as being all flat, Madison County is nestled in picturesque rolling terrain, blessed with fertile fields, wooded hills, gentle streams, abundant wildlife and majestic limestone bluffs. Besides the world-famous covered bridges, Winterset (the county seat) is also the birthplace of movie legend John Wayne.

An Outdoor Piano in Winterset, Iowa
While driving thru Iowa on my way from Oak Park, IL to Portland, OR, I stopped in the cozy little town of Winterset for lunch. While I was walking around the downtown square, I noticed a piano was set outside of the town's corthouse by the local Chamber of Commerce.
Naturally, I had to sit down and play it. This is my tribute to Linda Ronstadt and The Eagles...

100-5/1993 to Winterset IA , Good Old Days RV Travels
Special Presentation of Good Old Days RV Travels, featuring video travels of the 80's & 90's and how it was back then in days gone by. This video was taken 5/1993. Winterset is widely known for its covered bridges. A total of six covered bridges are located in Madison County, including one in Winterset City Park. The annual Covered Bridge Festival celebrates the bridges and local heritage every second full weekend in October.Another notable landmark is Clark Tower, located in Winterset City Park, which offers panoramic views of the surrounding Middle River Valley area. The Madison County Courthouse, in the middle of the town square, was built in 1868, and rebuilt in 1876 after being partially destroyed by fire. The John Wayne Birthplace Museum is located near the downtown area at 216 South 2nd Street. Winterset was used as a shooting location for the films Cold Turkey (1971), The Bridges of Madison County (1995), and The Crazies (2010).
