In the summer of 2011 a large group of Kingsbury family and relations toured the United Kingdom visiting many places that had significance to the Kingsbury family heritage and genealogy. This is the ninth stop on our UK adventure.

Coventry Cathedral
The Cathedral Church St Michael – better known as Coventry Cathedral – is a Grade 1 listed building. It replaced the 14th century St Michael’s Cathedral, destroyed in a German air raid in 1940.
Architect Basil Spence’s radical modernist design for the new building caused controversy when it was revealed in 1950. Modernism rejected the neo-classicalism common for many Victorian churches and instead used new construction technologies such as steel and reinforced concrete.
The cathedral is 91.5m long and 33.5m wide. It’s famous for its unusual spire, known as a fleche – the French word for arrow. The spire rises to 90m and is the tallest structure in Coventry. Other well-known features are a huge tapestry designed by artist Graham Sutherland and the Great West Window, which is suspended from the roof.

Coventry is the 9th largest city in England and the 12th largest in the United Kingdom.It is the second largest city in the West Midlands region, after Birmingham, with a population of 345,385 in 2015.
The current Coventry Cathedral was built after the destruction of the 14th century cathedral church of Saint Michael by the Luftwaffe in the Coventry Blitz of 14 November 1940. Coventry motor companies have contributed significantly to the British motor industry. The city has two universities, Coventry University in the city centre and the University of Warwick on the southern outskirts.

UK: PROTESTS OVER COVENTRY CATHEDRAL'S AUTOMOBILE SERVICE

The city of Coventry in the English Midlands, is known as the scene of Lady Godiva's famous naked horse ride... and the birthplace of the British automobile industry.
The community's dual claim to fame was highlighted as a naked protester-- invoking the spirit of Lady Godiva-- disrupted a service celebrating the 100th anniversary of the automobile at Coventry Cathedral.
The service was organized to celebrate the centenary of the Daimler factory in Coventry.
An 1897 model led the procession into the cathedral.
But the service also attracted groups and individuals opposed to the environmental impact of the automobile-- like this woman.
She made her point by following the tradition of Lady Godiva-- standing naked in
front of the packed congregation.
The young woman - known only as Angel - was led out with police desperately trying to cover her body with her coat.
It wasn't only protestors who saw the down side of the automobile industry.
Even the bishop of Coventry admitted the car has been a mixed blessing.
The Right Rev. Simon Barrington-Ward, Bishop of Coventry, said the car had been misused in the past and had caused pollution.
An Peugeot electric prototype-- representing the future-- was driven out of the cathedral-- into the mob of waiting protestors-- ending the service.

I think the celebration of the car in this way in the cathedral is nothing short of obscene really and my dressing up in this way is to illustrate the gravity of the situation.

Another woman, a friend of mine said I wish my baby was as lovely as that and that little girl died and this is what it is all about today. It's about real issues when it gets personal, not when it has to do with money which it seems this has all been about for the people in there. The protest featured Lady Godiva look alikes. According to folklore, she was the wife of an 11th century earl of Mercia, who rode naked through Coventry as a condition of her husband's repealing some unpopular taxes.

Not long ago, our video production company in Charlotte, North Carolina was commissioned to produce a series of machine demonstration videos for a company located in Coventry, England in the West Midlands of the United Kingdom.
Now, with any trip that I prepare for, or place I visit initially... I enthusiastically research all areas of special interest, history and any other notable aspects about the area worth investigating.
While I could spend more time mentioning the various places I indeed was lucky enough to visit during my trip: Like, the train ride to London, walking to Buckingham Palace, taking in the sights and sounds at Picadilly Circus, riding the London Eye, a tour of the impressive wonders of The Coventry Transport Museum, my first dining experience in England, the unfamiliar road signs and sight of people driving on the wrong side of the road and cars. Very strange I thought. This was only a handful of notable things worth mentioning though.
Through all England's mystery, splendor.... and lack of sunlight, (The sun set around 4:30pm during the winter months.)
I was lucky enough to film at one location that especially stood out to me....a place I wish I'd had more time to learn about before visiting.
My interest in World War II and the thought process of Hitler and the Nazis during such a horrid time had always been of interest to me....more so now in my later years than back in my school days.
Back then, I don't even know if I cared much for anything related to history, nowadays, I'm a sponge for historical information and find I'm always researching to learn more.
Now, In England, little did I know I was about to embark upon a landmark in Coventry that Adolph Hitler and the unforgiving and brutal Nazis regime would attack and utterly annihilate during a massive bombing campaign on the night of November 14th, 1940.
Hitler targeted Coventry, England because it was a leading munition centers in the UK and manufactured about 25% of British aircraft during the war. Coventry, with all its engineering and manufacturing capacity, had become the obvious area for mass production of many war-related products making it a viable target for Hitler's attempt to crush Britain.
Now, here I suddenly was.....on the outskirts of one of the most notable ruins of Coventry still standing today. Barely surviving the Battle of Britain or better known as, The Blitz......an air raid led by the German Luftwaffe that occurred between August and October 1940 in which over 198 tons of bombs had fallen.
Of all the many air raids during this time, even more so than the barrage of bombings on the city of London... this vicious encroachment stood out because it was one of the most inhumane and life altering blows the city of Coventry had ever been dealt since its existence. Operation Moonlight Sonata as it was called, The German air-raid and evil act that was unleashed on the city had rung the attention of the entire world at that time.
Now, there I wandered. Camera and tripod in hand, filming the remains of rubble from inside one of the architectural wonders of the world from over the past 1000 years. First named in the 12th century, The Priory Church of St Mary, then The Medieval Parish Church Cathedral of St Michael and now, the modern, Coventry Cathedral.
Upon returning home and educating myself on the brutality of that night and the detail of the air bombardment....I carefully reviewed the footage I had filmed and couldn't help but reflect on the hours of relentless bombing that had taken place right there where I stood. The loss of lives, the devastation of the city of Coventry and the sacredness of the original Cathedral all but destroyed by their despicable acts.
My time in England seemed to come and go by fast....
....but for a few moments I was able to capture one particular part of history that was destroyed by the evil of man but rebuilt and restored by a ministry of reconciliation and forgiveness. A symbol and reminder to all of us to not allow the poison of unforgiveness to fill our lives but to reconcile with those who have hurt us in order to rise above and move forward from any difficult circumstance in our life.
With portions of the original Cathedral walls surrounding me and the steeple towering above me....I focused my camera lens on the remaining wreckage still standing from that cold, dark night back on Thursday, November 14th, 1940 and began recording.

The foundation stone of the new cathedral was laid by the Queen on 23 March 1956.[14] It was consecrated on 25 May 1962, and Benjamin Britten's War Requiem, composed for the occasion, was premiered in the new cathedral on 30 May to mark its consecration.

Hey guys. We decided not to take the boat into Coventry Basin as we had heard that you can get a lot of rubbish in the weed hatch. So we took the train to Coventry to see the Cathedral. I have been learning about ww2 in my home schooling and loved looking round and filming Coventry Catheral.

Ruins of Coventry Cathedral The Cathedral Church of St Michael in Coventry
The Cathedral Church of St Michael, commonly known as Coventry Cathedral, is the seat of the Bishop of Coventry and the Diocese of Coventry, in Coventry, West Midlands, England. The current (9th) Bishop is Christopher Cocksworth and the current Dean is John Witcombe.
The city has had three cathedrals. The first was St Mary's, a monastic building, of which only a few ruins remain. The second was St Michael's, a 14th-century Gothic church later designated cathedral, that remains a ruined shell after its bombing during the Second World War. The third is the new St Michael's Cathedral, built after the destruction of the former.
The first cathedral in Coventry was St Mary's Priory and Cathedral, 1095 to 1102, when Robert de Limesey moved the bishop's see from Lichfield to Coventry,[1] until 1539 when it fell victim to King Henry VIII's Dissolution of the Monasteries. Prior to 1095, it had been a small Benedictine monastery (endowed by Leofric, Earl of Mercia and Lady Godiva in 1043),[2] Shortly after 1095 rebuilding began and by the middle of the 13th century it was a cathedral of 142 yards in length and included many large outbuildings.[3]Leofric was probably buried within the original Saxon church in Coventry. However, records suggest that Godiva was buried at Evesham Abbey, alongside her father confessor, Prior Aefic.
