08/10/12 Aurora from Covesea, Lossiemouth, Moray
My first rough attempt at a timelapse of the northern lights (aurora borealis) from Covesea, near Lossiemouth in Moray, Scotland.... Lessons learnt, 1. shoot in raw and convert to jpg. 2. resist any desire to move the camera once set up unless absolutely necessary :)
Lossiemouth - by car
In this video, part of the Lossiemouth by car series, we drive into Lossiemouth from the west.
12/32 Eyemouth to Lossiemouth - the long haul over the sea to Scotland!
The boat insurance people who share your passion…
John and Fionn leave the trawlers behind mindful that poor weather is forecast as they head towards the most difficult leg of their journey... passing a very remote lighthouse - 11 miles from land, as they make for Aberdeen and see porpoises at the harbour entrance. Shark Bay doesn't enter harbour which is restricted to commercial operations but continues on into the Moray Firth with a great view of the 'prettiest village from the sea'...Gardenstown...and on to Lossiemouth after a long 10 hour stretch.

12/32 Leg 10 - Eyemouth to Lossiemouth – the long haul over the sea to Scotland!
We are about to leave Eyemouth - we have crossed into Scotland now, definitely in Scotland. We have just had a chat with the harbour master, and the forecast is looking great for today but not very good for tomorrow. We’ve got winds gusting at force 6, maybe even force 7 from the North East, so we have made a change of plan. So what we are going to do is to head up to Peterhead, which is probably about 5 hours away, fuel up there then try and head West and hopefully get to Inverness today, otherwise we are going to get trapped in somewhere which could be for a few days. That’s the plan, cup of tea then we are on our way!
Cheerio! All clear, thanks mate!
Bellrock Lighthouse celebrated its bicentenary in 2011. Since the last keeper left in 1988, when the light became fully automated, the only inhabitants at this remote rock, over 11 miles out at sea, have been the seals.
Aberdeen Harbour, Shark Bay over,
Yes, for your information, this is a VTS area, you have entered without permission.
My apologies, I thought I had to get permission if I actually came inside the harbour, over.
No you ask permission when you enter the 1 mile zone area.
Brilliant, just off the mouth of Aberdeen Harbour, we saw splashes and there are some big dolphins feeding everywhere. They came around the boat, under the bow. You could see them swimming under the water a few metres down.
We got told off a little bit by Aberdeen Harbour for not asking permission to come within the mile zone and he told us not to come in the harbour, they are a bit busy in there. We don’t need to; we’ve got the dolphins out here haven’t we!
It’s a hectically busy port here at Aberdeen, there’s a whole fleet of oil-rig supply vessels just hanging off here. There must be about a dozen of them all hanging off port waiting to get in.
Petershead Harbour, Shark Bay over.
He is in at the moment, so if you go right the way over to the fuel birth he’ll be there to take you in.
All right, Thanks for that.
Nice little message for you there!
Haste ye back! Yeah, nice message. Everybody’s so friendly though wherever we go, aren’t they? All the marina staff, harbour masters - it’s been amazing really. Really good.
The thing that has blown me away on this trip so far has been the wildlife around the coast. From the pod of Porpoises on the very first night, we have had schools of Dolphins, we have had big flocks of seabird, lots of varieties of seabird. Just like here, just off the cliffs on the Moray Firth another huge colony of seabirds all reeling, crying - the stench of them is really powerful. But it’s just really great to see this around the coast. I was beginning to think that we had lost wildlife in Britain, but far from it, we have just got some amazing, amazing concentrations of wildlife around the coast.
I think that if I had to choose the prettiest village from the sea that we saw on our trip then this one would get my vote. Gardens Town in Aberdeenshire.
Where are we at?
Lossiemouth Harbour - the end of a long day, we have been at Sea for about 10 hours I reckon. We have covered a lot of ground but it’s good to be coming in now to anchor up for the night.

WARNING!
Do YOU fly or want to fly a remote controlled aircraft in the UK?
To avoid injuring or killing people first and foremost, but also therefore becoming the person who causes a huge shake up in who can and cannot legally operate Remotely Piloted Aircraft Systems, (RPAS) make sure you know UK CAA airspace regulations with regard to RC aircraft under 20Kg.
Here's a basic summary of the ones to keep in mind:
• The maximum permitted altitude is 400 feet (120 metres) above ground level
• The maximum distance RPAS can be flown from the operator is 500 metres
• The minimum visibility needs to be 5 km
• RPAS must be flown in line of sight of the operator
• An RPAS cannot be flown at night without special permission from the CAA
• Permission must be obtained from the owner of the take-off point
• An RPAS cannot be flown within 50 metres of structures, vehicles or people that are not under the control of the person in charge of the aircraft
• An RPAS cannot be flown over or within 150 metres of any built up area

ADVENTURE DAY| MORAY FIRTH

4K City Walks: Cullen to Findlater Castle - Scottish Coastal Walking Treadmill video
4K City Walks: Cullen to Findlater Castle - Scottish Coastal Walking Treadmill video is new and different for me.
I'm trying a different kind of virtual walk this time. I do a lot of nature walks but I haven't filmed any of them. This is a treadmill trails walk along the Moray Coastal Trail to Findlater Castle. It's a 16th century castle ruin perched on a cliff above a rocky sea. The day was rainy and I did my best to keep the rain off the lens. The walk is partially on paved and gravel path but mostly single track through tall grass and over Sunnyside beach which is small but secluded.
Please let me know if you like this type of virtual hike or not. I suspect those looking for a treadmill virtual walk will like it and others more interested in travel and cities might not.
Thanks for watching. Please subscribe.
From Wikipedia
Findlater Castle:
Findlater Castle is the old seat of the Earls of Findlater and Seafield, sitting on a 50-foot (15 m)-high cliff overlooking the Moray Firth on the coast of Banff and Buchan, Aberdeenshire, Scotland. It lies about 15 km (9.3 mi) west of Banff, near the village of Sandend, between Cullen and Portsoy. The cliffs here contain quartz; the name Findlater is derived not from Norse as earlier stated here, but from the Scots Gaelic words fionn (white) and leitir (cliff or steep slope). The first historical reference to the castle is from 1246. King Alexander III of Scotland repaired this castle in the 1260s in preparation for an invasion by King Haakon IV of Norway. The Vikings took and held the castle for some time. The castle remains that are still there are from the 14th-century rebuilding, when the castle was redesigned based on the Roslyn Castle model.
The castle is a scheduled monument.

Moray Coastal Trail:
The Moray Coastal Trail is a long distance path in north-east Scotland that along the coastline of the Moray council area. The route, which is 72 km long, runs between Forres and Cullen. It is designated as one of Scotland's Great Trails by Scottish Natural Heritage (SNH), and connects with two further Great Trails: the Speyside Way at Spey Bay, and the Dava Way at Forres. The Moray Coast Trail can be combined with sections of these two routes to form a 153 km circular route known as the Moray Way, and also forms part of the North Sea Trail. The trail is primarily intended for walkers, but many sections are also suitable for cycling and horseriding. An alternative route for cycling, the Moray Coast Ride, shares some sections of path with the Moray Coast Trail, and forms part of the National Cycle Network's Route 1. About 23,000 people use the path every year, of whom about 1,000 complete the entire route.
SNH recommend that the trail be walked west to east (from Forres to Cullen), due to the direction of the prevailing winds. In this direction the following settlements are passed: Forres, Kinloss, Findhorn, Burghead, Hopeman, Lossiemouth, Spey Bay, Portgordon, Buckie, Findochty, Portknockie, Cullen. Places of note along the route are the Covesea Skerries Lighthouse and Bow Fiddle Rock.
