CSX Stack Train at the Cowan Railroad Museum - 693, 3148
A southbound CSX double stack train passes the Cowan Railroad Museum before it tackles the grade of Cumberland Mountain. Many trains require a pusher to cross the mountain, but this train is unassisted.
The depot was originally on the other side of the tracks, but had to be moved when it was donated. The display train in front of the depot is an NC&StL caboose, a flatcar and a Porter steam locomotive.
This line was built as part of the Nashville and Chattanooga, later NC&StL. In 1957 the NC&StL was merged into the L&N.
The locomotives are CSX 693 and CSX 3148.
CSX Cowan Pusher Locomotives Cut Off on the Fly from Northbound Mixed Freight
A northbound mixed freight on CSX is crossing Cumberland Mountain with the help of pusher locomotives. When the shove is complete the pusher cuts off on the fly as the train continues north.
Pushers have been a way of life in Cowan, TN since the Nashville and Chattanooga (later NC&StL, then L&N) built the line before the Civil War.
This was shot next to the Cowan depot, now a railroad museum. The locomotive is NC&StL 100, a GE 44 Tonner. You also see an NC&StL wooden bay window caboose next to the depot.
The train's locomotives are CSX 3006 and CSX 291. The pushers are CSX 560 and CSX 3242

CSX Volume 2 (Chattanooga to Nashville)
Purchase this at greenfrog.com
Spectacular scenery, mountain railroading, pusher service, spectacular bridges, rivers...all the things that make railroading enjoy-able to watch...this is what you'll find on Volume 2 of our CSX series.
Volume 2 takes you from Chattanooga to Nashville over one of the most spectacular railroad divisions in the U.S.
You'll see tremendous action on CSX's Chattanooga Subdivision through Cowan Tunnel, across Cumberland Mountain (where pusher service is necessary from both directions, and across Nickajack Lake.)
Norfolk Southern also shares trackage with CSX out of Chattanooga, and you'll witness the seemingly endless parade of joint operations on this portion of trackage.
Spectacular bridges like the high trestle over interstate 24, and the lift bridge over the Tennessee River are just a few of the great bridges this railroad must cross as it wends it's way Northward.
We'll also take you in the cab over Cumberland Mountain and through the 2,228 foot bore. Then we'll couple to a train and take you back over the mountain from the other direction---on and off train!
Beside spectacular action north of Cowan Tunnel, we'll finally end our trip in Nashville where we'll take you into CSX's Radner yard, into the hump towers, and a short tour of yard action.
