After turning off of Highway 3 (Crowsnest Highway) we begin the trek north on Highway 22, aka Cowboy Trail. Its approximately 135 kms/89 miles to Longview and it feels every bit of it too as its quite desolate; very scenic but desolate none the less if you get stuck out in this area.

This video is of the southern-most stretch of Alberta Highway 22, known as the Cowboy Trail, from Highway 3, the Crowsnest Highway to Highway 1, The Trans-Canada Highway.
Highway 22 is a North-South highway which goes from Highway 3 in Southern Alberta to just North of Mayerthorpe which is located East of Edmonton.
The portion of the highway shown in this video winds its way through the foothills which are just to the east of the Rocky mountains. There are few towns along this stretch, but there are many large ranches situated in this scenic area.
On the day I drove this, there was a strong chinook wind which is a warm wind that blows from the South-West. This region gets many chinook winds, and it is not unusual for the snow to nearly disappear altogether. On this day, the winds created a lot of drifting across the road in areas that were not sheltered from the wind. Where the road was not sheltered, the wind and snow was screaming across the road like a jet. Fortunately, a snow plow was just ahead of me where the drifting was worst.
