The Cowes Floating Bridge is a vehicular chain ferry which crosses the River Medina on the Isle of Wight, off the south coast of England. The ferry crosses the tidal river from East Cowes to Cowes. The first floating bridge between East Cowes and Cowes was established in 1859 and is one of the few remaining that has not been replaced by a physical bridge. The service is owned and operated by the Isle of Wight Council, who have run it since 1901. Prior to ownership by the local authority the service was run by The Floating Bridge Company and The Steam Packet Company (Red Funnel). The ferry currently used is named No. 6, the sixth to be owned by the Isle of Wight Council, and ninth in total. It was built in 2017 and can carry up to 20 cars. The Cowes floating bridge remains the only way to cross the River Medina between the towns without taking a ten-mile trip via Newport. The current vessel was built in 2017 and upon completion was installed on 14 May 2017. However, after a string of technical issues the service was suspended by the Maritime and Coastguard Agency, and a passenger-only replacement service provided by a small launch. After several months of service suspension and intermittent operation, full service finally resumed early in 2018.

The new (2017) cowes floating bridge arrives on a foggy but bright day. Name to be decided , it is floating bridge number 7 , but cowes residents vote for floaty mac float face :)
New Cowes Floating Bridge - Floaty McFloatface or Blyskawica?
This is the arrival of the new Cowes Chain Ferry on 8th April 2017.
There has been much public support for naming it Floaty McFloatface.
However another suggestion gaining popularity is to name it Blyskawica after the Polish warship that protected Cowes and East Cowes during World War II

Cowes Floating Bridge is back in service... Again.
07/06/17: After 3 weeks of inspection, the Cowes Floating Bridge made it back into service on June 7th at 5:00 am however, at 1:00 pm, the ferry ran aground on the East Cowes side and was beached until 7:30 pm when this was recorded.

Cowes Floating Bridge BREAKS DOWN on day 2!
14th of May 2017: The new Cowes Floating Bridge 6 has been in service for just under 20 hours and has already had a malfunction which left passengers stranded on board. There was no power to the ferry and as a result, the ramp could not be lowered. Passengers on the Cowes side were waiting for an extended period of time before instructed to take the Folly Water taxi from the Red Jet terminal. After an hour of phone calls to the manufacturer, the operators used a manual release switch to let the ramp fall by gravity. as the ramp lowered, the crew realized that they were 2 meters too far from shore, an attempt was made to use fencing as a ramp but it was too short. Eventually the passengers went in the water and escaped that way.

First ride on the New Floating Bridge
Recently the Isle of Wight council invested in a multi million pound project to replace the old Floating Bridge No 5. Floating Bridge No 6 boasts a faster, smoother, quieter and more spacious service. This was the first commercial crossing of Floating Bridge No 6 from East Cowes, Saturday May 13th 2017.

Cowes is an English seaport town and civil parish on the Isle of Wight. Cowes is located on the west bank of the estuary of the River Medina, facing the smaller town of East Cowes on the east bank. The two towns are linked by the Cowes Floating Bridge, a chain ferry.
Charles Godfrey Leland's 19th century verses describe the towns poetically as The two great Cowes that in loud thunder roar/This on the eastern, that the western shore. Cowes has been seen as a home for international yacht racing since the founding of the Royal Yacht Squadron in 1815. It gives its name to the world's oldest regular regatta, Cowes Week, which occurs annually in the first week of August. Later, powerboat races are held. Much of the town's architecture is still heavily influenced by the style of ornate building that Prince Albert popularised.
Industry in both Cowes and East Cowes has always centred on the building and design of marine craft and materials associated with boat-making, including the early flying boats, and sail-making. It is the place where the first hovercraft was tested. The population of the town increases dramatically during Cowes Week, the busiest time of the year for local businesses. The town was reported to be doing well in 2009, despite the economic downturn.
Cowes is a gateway town for the Isle of Wight. Travellers to Southampton are served by a high speed catamaran passenger ferry from Cowes known as the Red Jet. Southern Vectis' route 1 is the main bus service in Cowes. Single decker buses branded Red1 serve the Red Jet terminal, whilst route 1 double deckers serve the M&S Foodhall at Carvel Lane (the site of the former Cowes railway station). Both run to Newport to take travellers on to other island destinations. Wightbus also ran local services around Cowes and Gurnard until 2011. The Cowes Floating Bridge connects the two towns of Cowes and East Cowes throughout the day. It is one of a few remaining chain ferries not replaced by a physical bridge.
Cowes is the start of the Isle of Wight Coastal Path.
Cowes Park and Ride is a park and ride scheme on the Isle of Wight, featuring an 85-space car park and bus stop on the outskirts of Cowes in Somerton, on a former industrial site. It is currently served by Southern Vectis buses on route 1 every 10 minutes during the day.

After chips eaten under the Umbrella Tree we caught the 5 to Newport then the 1 to Cowes hoping to get some pictures of the setting sun from Egypt Point. Sadly the clouds thwarted us but nevertheless we got some nice shots!
