Cowes Floating Bridge - East Cowes Side - Isle Of Wight Chain Ferry - June 2018 | kittikoko
The Cowes Floating Bridge is a vehicular chain ferry which crosses the River Medina on the Isle of Wight, off the south coast of England. The ferry crosses the tidal river from East Cowes to Cowes. The first floating bridge between East Cowes and Cowes was established in 1859 and is one of the few remaining that has not been replaced by a physical bridge. The service is owned and operated by the Isle of Wight Council, who have run it since 1901. Prior to ownership by the local authority the service was run by The Floating Bridge Company and The Steam Packet Company (Red Funnel). The ferry currently used is named No. 6, the sixth to be owned by the Isle of Wight Council, and ninth in total. It was built in 2017 and can carry up to 20 cars. The Cowes floating bridge remains the only way to cross the River Medina between the towns without taking a ten-mile trip via Newport. The current vessel was built in 2017 and upon completion was installed on 14 May 2017. However, after a string of technical issues the service was suspended by the Maritime and Coastguard Agency, and a passenger-only replacement service provided by a small launch. After several months of service suspension and intermittent operation, full service finally resumed early in 2018.

Cowes is an English seaport town and civil parish on the Isle of Wight. Cowes is located on the west bank of the estuary of the River Medina, facing the smaller town of East Cowes on the east bank. The two towns are linked by the Cowes Floating Bridge, a chain ferry.
Charles Godfrey Leland's 19th century verses describe the towns poetically as The two great Cowes that in loud thunder roar/This on the eastern, that the western shore. Cowes has been seen as a home for international yacht racing since the founding of the Royal Yacht Squadron in 1815. It gives its name to the world's oldest regular regatta, Cowes Week, which occurs annually in the first week of August. Later, powerboat races are held. Much of the town's architecture is still heavily influenced by the style of ornate building that Prince Albert popularised.
Industry in both Cowes and East Cowes has always centred on the building and design of marine craft and materials associated with boat-making, including the early flying boats, and sail-making. It is the place where the first hovercraft was tested. The population of the town increases dramatically during Cowes Week, the busiest time of the year for local businesses. The town was reported to be doing well in 2009, despite the economic downturn.
Cowes is a gateway town for the Isle of Wight. Travellers to Southampton are served by a high speed catamaran passenger ferry from Cowes known as the Red Jet. Southern Vectis' route 1 is the main bus service in Cowes. Single decker buses branded Red1 serve the Red Jet terminal, whilst route 1 double deckers serve the M&S Foodhall at Carvel Lane (the site of the former Cowes railway station). Both run to Newport to take travellers on to other island destinations. Wightbus also ran local services around Cowes and Gurnard until 2011. The Cowes Floating Bridge connects the two towns of Cowes and East Cowes throughout the day. It is one of a few remaining chain ferries not replaced by a physical bridge.
Cowes is the start of the Isle of Wight Coastal Path.
Cowes Park and Ride is a park and ride scheme on the Isle of Wight, featuring an 85-space car park and bus stop on the outskirts of Cowes in Somerton, on a former industrial site. It is currently served by Southern Vectis buses on route 1 every 10 minutes during the day.

Exploring Norris Castle (East Cowes, Isle of Wight, United Kingdom)
This is some film of Norris Castle in East Cowes on the Isle of Wight. The castle was built in 1799 by the architect James Wyatt and sits on an estate of 225 acres. It was purchased over a year ago by a property developer looking to turn it into a luxury hotel. The interior contains an old kitchen with a mechanical spit roast system, two ice houses, a stable, cave art and a wine cellar. The castle will require a lot of work to get it into a luxury hotel standard.

Round The Island Yacht Race 2018 (Cowes - The Needles) - Mavic Pro Drone Views
The Round The Island yacht race around the Isle of Wight is quite a spectacle for everyone. You don't need to be into sailing to enjoy the fantastic views of more that 1200 yachts sailing the whole way around the Isle of Wight.
This year I thought I would try and get some aerial shots using my DJI Mavic Pro, so managed to drag myself out of bed and get down to Cowes seafront around 6:50am.
The weather was fantastic for watching, clear blue skies, around 22c (at 7am!) and hardly any wind. Er.... That's the bit though that perhaps, from a sailing point of view, wasn't so good for anyone who wanted a fast race, so I think most people settled down for a nice long and relaxing day :)
It was a shame that most of the yachts decided to start far out away from the Squadron Line in order to catch more wind, would have made better shots if they were closer to shore, but hey ho.
After using one battery at Cowes, I then moved to Fort Victoria to get some shots as they sailed through the narrower channel between Hurst Castle and Fort Albert.
Then I moved onto the Needles, which regardless of the yacht racing, was lovely! Hardly any wind, clear skies, hot and beautiful views :)
First time that I had ever flown the drone right out over the lighthouse, so couldn't help getting a few to many shots of the Needles while I was there, but you gotta grab every opportunity :)
I'm fairly pleased with the end results, so now looking forward to trying to get some interesting yacht footage during Cowes Week.

Climbing Derelict Hammerhead Crane Cowes Isle of Wight. Urbex and Climbing
Climbing the abandoned derelict Cowes hammerhead (Urbex and climbing).
Located at the mouth of the River Medina in Cowes Isle of Wight .
Constructed in 1912 by Babcock and Wilcox of Renfrew Scotland for the Cowes shipbuilder JS White, this giant crane could lift up to 80 Tons and was used during the construction of many ships and naval vessels to lower the massive boilers and turbines into the engine rooms.
The Cowes Hammerhead crane is unique being the only pre WW2 dockyard crane left in existence in England and representing early structural, mechanical and electrical engineering design.
The Crane has been out of use since 2004. The findings of two engineering surveys carried out in 2005 and 2009 show that the Crane is structurally sound. The Cowes Hammerhead Crane was listed Grade II on the 2nd August 2004 through the good efforts of the Isle of Wight Industrial Archaeological Society, upgraded to a Grade 11 star 30th October 2007, and placed on the English heritage ‘At Risk’ list July 2008.
(History from The Cowes Hammerhead Crane Trust:
Night footage is ungraded and has not had noise reduction applied. Real world test of the low light capabilities of the Sony a7s.
Was shot at f4 in APS-C mode.
I would not advise climbing this, it is extremely dangerous.
The wood at the top is rotten and much of the metal floor has rusted away.
