This is the first of two videos. The movement of the boat going back into the water is very slow. August 2011

Derelict 'Florence Filberg' finally hauled away
SOOKE - A derelict tug boat in the Sooke Harbour is finally being hauled away, nearly two years after it was set ablaze by arsonists.
In 2007 the Florence Filberg was abandoned in the harbour. It quickly became more than an eyesore. It became an environmental hazard.
At the time of the fire the District of Sooke tried to get federal funding to help with the one hundred thousand dollar cleanup.
Now that the municipality is developing the harbour, and building a public wharf, Sooke has struck a deal with the Department of Fisheries and Oceans to remove the charred remains of the tug.
Most of the wood and metal parts of the vessel will be recycled. The eel grass beds will be remediated and four other derelict boats, including a 40 foot fishing vessel, will also be hauled away in Sooke's effort to revitalize the area.

Syrene I
This is a boat with a lot of great history and character. Syrene I was built in 1921 in London for a Greek tobacco millionaire. In the 30s, she was brought to British Columbia to serve a mission boat for the Church of Canada. In 1941 she was purchased by the Forest Service of British Columbia to service the province's forest lands. In 1977 she was purchased by a private owner and kept in a boathouse at the Royal Vancouver Yacht Club until April of 2010. At that point she was purchased by her present owners, and now she is ready for her next voyage.
