String Contingent, Old Time, Wauchope arts 2014
This tune came to me while driving on tour, the boys asleep in the back of the car as per usual. I began developing the ideas on Morty (Mortimer, my bass) and the main theme grew into a bass tune with an old timey feel to it. I think of this piece as a song without words — it has a verse, bridge, chorus, and hot solos from Graham and Chris!

The String Contingent, Valvasen, at Wauchope arts.
This piece was written for my grandpa, Val. I sought to capture the tension of life with cancer; the release that death can bring; and the quiet, slow-burning way that Val brought joy, humour and love to so many peoples’ lives. At the time I was writing this piece, just after Val died, a great friend of mine was seeking the light at the end of a dark tunnel. Through this piece, I wanted to show her the joy and beauty that Gramps left for us all.

Cowwarr Cutters Cup 08, No2
The Cowwarr Cutters cup, one of the races containing the mower by Team Cowwarr
String Contingent, Racing Calm, wauchope arts.
It’s 5am. I’m making tea and toast. One part of my mind deals steadily with the slow, calm, early morning world. Another part races through a hyper-analysis of everyday objects and happenings. Chains of random association – tens of objects linked in fractions of a second – the kettle boils – the toast pops up. 5am, racing calm. On to another day.
Sawdust
Filmed by Jim Newman
Sawdust showcases the approach I take to writing and playing music with Holly and Chris, in which disparate fragments gradually unite. The piece moves through different textures as the function of each instrument
shifts between melody, rhythm and harmony. I love the way this piece has developed and how much it has changed since I brought it to the group. This is an exciting aspect of making music together; there are no rules!
