Ride Day 69: Coyhaique to Chile Chico, Chile
Full Post: I set off at sunrise to make my way to Chile Chico today in what was supposed to be a 2-hour ferry ride from Puerto Ingeniero Ibáñez to Chile Chico.
I was well rested after a nice rest in Coyhaique and was eager to get on my way early.
Instead, I found the ferry had already left before 9 am (even though the website said 11 am departure) and the only other option was a late night ferry, which was fully booked, so I would have to go on standby.
The only choice I had was a 10-hour ride around the General Carrera Lake or 'Lake Buenos Aires shared by Argentina and Chile.
As it was early and the weather was beautiful, I decided to take the long way around General Carrera Lake. And boy was it worth it.
Ruta 7 would take me all the way to Puerto Guadal, and from there Rutas 265 would take me home' to Chile Chico.
If there was any ride that encapsulated Patagonia by motorbike, it was this one. The road winds its way around the lakes with a backdrop of three stunning national parks, the Laguna San Rafael National Park, the Reserva Nacional Lago Gral. Carrera and the Reserva Nacional Lago Jeinemeni
With snow peaked mountains and glaciers on one side, the turquoise General Carrera Lake the other, cliff faces, slim dirt tracks, it had absolutely everything.
The days' ride took me over 12 beautiful hours, and I traveled over 287 miles (463 km) and swept through little villages such as Valle Simpson, Villa Blanco, Villa Cerro Castillo, Bahía Murta, Puerto Río Tranquilo, Puerto Guadal and finally into Chile Chico.
I set up camp about 5 minutes out of town at sundown and had a great night sleep to get me ready for my trip to Argentina on the morrow.
Chile Chico
Chile Chico is a town in Chilean Patagonia. It sits on the southern shore of General Carrera Lake, which is ringed by glaciers and mountains. In the lake is the Capilla de Mármol Natural Sanctuary, a series of marble formations sculpted by the water. Southwest of town, Lago Jeinimeni National Reserve is home to condors and guanacos. Chile Chico is near the Río Jeinimeni border crossing with Argentina. From Wikipedia

The Carretera Austral is a 1200km long road in the south of Chile which connects the most remote areas of the country. The ruta 7 is a paradise for adventure seekers as it is a mostly unpaved road which brings you to the lesser known parts of Patagonia in the stunning Los Lagos and Aysen Region.
Our plan was to get from Puerto Montt till Villa O’Higgins by thumb to get in touch with locals and fellow adventurers along the way. After making our way down from Puerto Montt to Puyuhuapi in the last episode we are trying to hitchhike down to Coihaique to rest for a few days - as it turns out we have to deal with a lot of rain and we need several rides that day to go down south with the Bosque Encantado being one of the stops.
After a few days we continue hitchhiking and get a lift by Cesar who takes us all the way to Villa Cerro Castillo where he is in the process of building a hostel for adventurous travelers like us as this place is all about the hike to Cerro Castillo which can be done in 4 days or in one day. We chose the day hike option and got rewarded with stunning views and impressive colors.
The next stretch should take us further down to Puerto Rio Tranquilo. We got lucky again as an english couple offered to take us all the way. After our arrival in Puerto Rio Tranquilo we met up with my old friend Pato who owns a tour company (explorasur.cl) and offered to take us to the most popular sight: the marble caves of Puerto Rio Tranquilo.
This part of the trip was executed within 1week by using altogether 5 rides via hitchhiking - following I list all the places we visited & Things to do at the Carretera Austral:
- Puyuhuapi
- Queulat National Park / Parque Nacional Queulat
- Bosque Encanta
- Coyhaique / Coihaique
- Cerro Castillo / Villa Cerro Castillo
- Puerto Rio Tranquilo
- Marble Caves / Capillas de Marmol
- Lago General Carrera
I'm excited to share all our experiences in Patagonia over the course of the next 6 weeks with you. In the next episodes we will Hitchhike the southern part of the Carretera Austral, ice hike over the glaciers of the southern Patagonian Icefield and meet impressive characters along the way.
The Patagonian Expedition is a 95% self funded video documentary project following my trip in 2012/2013. Our aim is to show you the beauty of the rather unknown parts in Patagonia alongside with the famous spots.
Beside beautiful landscape you can expect loads of information and our personal experiences and struggles along the way.

Part-1 Cerro Castillo National Reserve, Patagonia, Chile. Fatih Aksoy
As I was bicycling in Patagonia, all of a sudden I had the best view from top of the hills to these groups of mountains. I just couldn't believe it: it was the mountain Castillo National reserve park. This is part 1 and there is 4 parts to it.
Coyhaique is a city in the Aysén region of Chile, known for being a gateway to remote parts of Patagonia. The McKay rocky hill has paths that crisscross it and stands near the city. The craft market in the main square sells ceramic and wool products. In the outskirts is the Simpson River, full of trout. To the west of the city, there is the Simpson River National Reserve, with its forests and the Cascada de la Virgen, where pumas and huemules live.
