Mystery Surrounding Sea Lions Deaths Becoming Clearer

CAMPBELL RIVER - The Department of Fisheries and Oceans believes public input is helping them gain more insight into the mystery surrounding why dead sea lions have been appearing along Vancouver Island shorelines.

Paul Cottrell of the DFO says tips and photos from the public were able to help establish that the two stellar sea lions discovered recently near Comox and Campbell River were intact when they first came ashore. Cottrell says both mammals had their heads removed after they were ashore. He also confirms that both were shot while they were in the water.

While DFO looks for the person or people responsible for the sea lions, one group of people who make their livings through jobs on the waters around Vancouver Island believe they have a partial theory.

A spokesperson for the group, who did not want to be identified, told CTV News they believe members of First Nations Bands with special harvest permits may be taking the animals without properly disposing of the remains. Cottrell, however says there's no evidence to support that theory and says no permits have been issued in the areas where the deceased sea lions have been discovered.

DFO is hoping anyone with further information on the shootings or decapitations will call the Marine Mammal Response Network at 1-800-465-4336.
