DOZENS ARRESTED IN FUGITIVE ROUNDUP
Friday, July 2, 2010— Dozens of sex offenders were arrested after a two-week roundup conducted by a joint county-federal task force, Cook County Sheriff Tom Dart announced Friday. The initiative began the day after National Children's Day on June 13th .
For two weeks the Cook County Sheriff's Office partnered with the U.S. Marshals Great Lakes Fugitive Task Force and the Cook County Probation Department on Operation Children's Day to target compliant and non-compliant sex offenders, including fugitives.
The first phase of the roundup took place during the week of June 13th and targeted the 79 registered sex offenders in unincorporated Cook County - ensuring they were adhering to all terms of probation, including computer access and proximity to children. This compliance initiative was in addition to the yearly check of sex offenders required under state law.
The second phase of the operation took place during the week of June 20 and involved tracking down 80 non-compliant sex offenders living in suburban Cook County, including some who had warrants out for their arrest.
Of those 80:
* Police located and arrested ten on 17 different warrants
* 20 were recently deported by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement
* 9 were arrested for non-compliance with the sex offender registry and/or failing to register as a sex offender at their residence
* 4 who had not received previous notification instructions were notified they had 3 days to register as a sex offender.
* Among those arrested was one of Cook County's Most Wanted: Tyreka Simms, who was tracked down in Louisiana and arrested with the help of officials in that state. Simms had violated terms of her probation after her conviction for molesting a mentally handicapped relative left with an STD after the assault.
* Also during the operation, officers arrested drug fugitive Billy Wade in Tinley Park after a five-hour standoff last Monday. Wade wasn't a sex offender, but a tip led to his presence in an area CCSO police and U.S. Marshals were canvassing. Wade is now in custody on drug and gun charges.
With summer vacation here, the sheriff's office recognizes the importance of cracking down on sex offenders to help ensure the public safety.
We're going to continue to be vigilant about keeping an eye on those who pose a danger to our children, Dart said. But I would encourage parents to also do their due diligence and check the state registry to identify sex offenders who might be living in their neighborhoods.

'The Cleveland Strangler': The Story of a Brutal Serial Killer & His Forgotten Victims
At least 11 black women were raped and killed on Cleveland's East side between 2007 and 2009 by a man named Anthony Sowell. It's one of the worst cases of serial murder in recent history and has been largely left untold.
For Wilbert L. Cooper, who was born and raised in Cleveland, the real story lies in how Sowell was able to get away with these heinous acts for two years. These crimes say as much about the depraved killer as they do about race, class, and law enforcement in the City of Cleveland.
Wilbert goes home to dive back into the case that's haunted the city, meeting with some of Sowell's surviving victims, family members of the deceased, and the police officers who put Sowell on death row.

ch 9) Slavery Without Submission, Emancipation Without Freedom
chapter 9: A People's History (Of The United States) Howard Zinn.
~
Chapter 9, Slavery Without Submission, Emancipation Without Freedom addresses slave rebellions, the abolition movement, the Civil War, and the effect of these events on African-Americans. Zinn writes that the large-scale violence of the war was used to end slavery instead of the small-scale violence of the rebellions because the latter may have expanded beyond anti-slavery, resulting in a movement against the capitalist system. He writes that the war could limit the freedom granted to African-Americans by allowing the government control over how that freedom was gained.

Conversation on the Omar Ibn Said Collection
Scholars discussed the autobiography of Omar Ibn Said, the only known autobiography by a slave written in Arabic in the United States. It is a historically unique and important primary source for those trying to understand the connections between the Muslim communities in Western Africa and the slaves who continued to practice Islamic faith after being captured during the Atlantic slave trade.

Al Capone's Life Was More Tragic Than You Realized
During Prohibition, Al Capone became the biggest bootlegger in American history, and ruled the Chicago Mob for six years. But there's more to this legendary gangster than you might think. Let's open the vault and explore the tragic life of Al Capone.
In 1930, the city of Chicago named Al Capone as Public Enemy No. 1. Most knew Capone by a completely different nickname: Scarface. The gangster sported three prominent scars on the side of his neck and left cheek, and they gave him a pretty intimidating look. Whenever he was asked about them, the crime lord would say that he was injured in World War I.
The truth, however, was very different. As a young man, Capone worked as a bouncer for Frankie Yale. One fateful evening, the 18-year-old Al spotted a girl named Lena across the bar, but when he tried asking her out, she turned him down… twice. As she was leaving, Capone tried out one last line, giving her a foulmouthed compliment on her figure.
Lena didn't take it as a compliment, and neither did her brother, Frank Galluccio. Infuriated, Galluccio pulled a knife and went to work on Capone's face, slashing him to ribbons and forcing Capone to get 80 stitches. Frankie Yale intervened before things could get any more violent, and it would eventually turn out that Capone could be a surprisingly forgiving guy... when he wanted to be.
After experiencing his knife work firsthand, Capone later hired Galluccio to work as his bodyguard.

It all started with a bunch of footprints at a construction site. Or at least the modern-day fascination with “Bigfoot” did. Stories of hairy giants in the woods and wandering “wild men” had been a part of American lore for nearly two centuries by the time the nickname “Bigfoot” was coined in the late 1950s. But it was then, with the advent of television and the modern media, that chasing down giants in the woods became a national craze.
It was the spring of 1957 and a road construction project was underway near Bluff Creek in northern California. The project was run by a contractor named Ray Wallace and his brother, Wilbur. They hired thirty men that summer to work on the project and by late in the season, Wilbur Wallace reported that something had been throwing around some metal oil drums at the work site. When winter arrived that year, cold weather brought the work to a halt, even though only ten miles of road had been completed.
In early spring 1958, some odd tracks were discovered near the Mad River close to Korbel, California. Some of the locals believed they were bear tracks. As it happened, this was close to another work site that was managed by the Wallace brothers.
Later on that spring, work started up again on the road near Bluff Creek. A number of new men were hired, including Jerry Crew, who drove more than two hours each weekend so he could be home with his family. Ten more miles of road were constructed, angling up across the face of a nearby mountain. On August 3, 1958, Wilbur Wallace stated that something threw a seven-hundred-pound spare tire to the bottom of a deep gully near the work site. This incident was reported later in the month, after the discovery of the footprints.
On August 27, Jerry Crew arrived for work early in the morning and found giant, manlike footprints pressed into the dirt all around his bulldozer. He was at first upset by the discovery, thinking that someone was playing a practical joke on him, but then he decided to report what he found to Wilbur Wallace. At this point, the footprints had not been made public. That occurred on September 21, when Mrs. Jess Bemis, the wife of one of the Bluff Creek work crew, wrote a letter to Andrew Genzoli, the editor of a local newspaper. Genzoli published her husband's Big Foot story and caught the attention of others in the area. One of these was Betty Allen, a newspaper reporter who suggested in a late September column that plaster casts should be made of the footprints. She had already talked to local Native Americans and interviewed residents about hairy giants in the area. She convinced Genzoli to run other stories and letters about Bigfoot. This would be the beginning of a story that would capture the imagination of America.
On October 1 and 2, Jerry Crew discovered more tracks, very similar to the first ones. In response to the new discovery, two workers quit and Wilbur Wallace allegedly introduced his brother Ray to the situation for the first time, bringing him out to show him the tracks. On the day after the last tracks were found, Jerry Crew made plaster casts of the footprints, with help from his friend Bob Titmus and reporter Betty Allen. He was irritated that people were making fun of him and wanted to offer the casts as evidence that he wasn’t making the whole thing up. On October 5, Andrew Genzoli published his now-famous story about Bigfoot. It was picked up worldwide by the wire services, and soon the term was being used in general conversation.

A Study in Scarlet by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle
A Study in Scarlet is an 1887 detective novel by British author Arthur Conan Doyle. Written in 1886, the story marks the first appearance of Sherlock Holmes and Dr. Watson, who would become among the most famous characters in literature. The book's title derives from a speech given by Holmes, an amateur detective, to his friend and chronicler Watson on the nature of his work, in which he describes the story's murder investigation as his study in scarlet: There's the scarlet thread of murder running through the colourless skein of life, and our duty is to unravel it, and isolate it, and expose every inch of it.
