Amazon Marketplace - Day One: Stories of Entrepreneurship - African Promise Foundation
Amazon Marketplace seller Suzy Benson Gillies heard about the aftermath of Uganda’s 21 long years of war, and made a trip wondering if she could help. While visiting a refugee camp she made a promise to an old man named Tiger to share the story of the Acholi people. That promise inspired the African Promise Foundation, her nonprofit designed to help the Acholi and other refugees in the war-torn country. She set up shop with cooperatives of local women who handcraft jewelry. Profits support school fees for orphans, business training for the women, and more product. Suzy was selling jewelry at a farmer’s market when a chance encounter her to Amazon Exclusives. Through her work with APF and a separate travel company, she’s sustained her family of six as a single parent.

Here be Dragons 2018: Track B
Sea monsters such as the kraken, prister, and rosmarus indicated uncharted territory on elaborate new maps of the world in medieval times. Despite many advances in mapping technology and data acquisition in the last 500 years, our ocean remains largely uncharted and poorly understood.
Here be Dragons convened explorers, innovators, artists, scientists, and storytellers to identify the uncharted territories that still exist in ocean exploration and storytelling. In response, MIT students will work with explorers to develop and present collaborative projects to deploy new and emerging technologies in the field that address gaps in our understanding and sharing of the ocean. Select proposals will be funded for Rapid Field Deployments.
In collaboration with the National Geographic Society and New England Aquarium.

National Advisory Committee (NAC) on Racial, Ethnic and Other Populations November 7, 2019 Fall Meeting (Day 1)
Meeting Agenda and Presentation Files:
The National Advisory Committee (NAC) considers topics such as hard to reach populations, race and ethnicity, language, aging populations, American Indian and Alaska Native tribal considerations, new immigrant populations, populations affected by natural disasters, highly mobile and migrant populations, complex households, rural populations, and population segments with limited access to technology. The Committee also advises on data privacy and confidentiality, among other issues.
In 2012, the Secretary of Commerce re-chartered the NAC as the Census Bureau National Advisory Committee on Racial, Ethnic, and Other Populations. The committee, known as NAC, consists of up to 32 members appointed by the Director of the Census Bureau.
NAC is an important channel of communication between the Census Bureau and race, ethnic, and other communities, focusing “on the identification of new strategies for improved census operations, survey and data collection methods, including identifying cost-efficient ways to increase census participation” and reduce the undercount.
